Book excerpt: Few players in the history of baseball suffered as many professional setbacks as Roy Sievers (1926-2017). After an award winning rookie season in 1949, he endured a year and a half-long slump, a nearly career-ending injury and a major position change--all from 1950 through 1953. Traded in 1954, he prevailed and became one of the most feared hitters of the decade, the Washington Senators' home run leader and the biggest gate attraction since Walter Johnson. Drawing on original interviews with Sievers and teammates, this first full-length biography covers the life and career of a first baseman who overcame adversity to restore a dispirited franchise.

Book Population Resources and Development

Download or read book Population Resources and Development written by Shripad Tuljapurkar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-07-22 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 21st century, the populations of the world’s nations will display large and long-lived changes in age structure. Many of these began with fertility change and are amplified by declining mortality and by migration within and between nations. Demography will matter in this century not by force of numbers, but by the pressures of waves of age structural change. Many developing countries are in relatively early stages of fertility decline and will experience age waves for two or more generations. These waves create shifting flows of people into the key age groups, greatly complicating the task of managing development, from building human capabilities and creating jobs to growing industry, infrastructure and institutions. In this book, distinguished scientists examine key demographic, social, economic, and policy aspects of age structural change in developing economies. This book provides a joint examination of dimensions of age structural change that have often been considered in isolation from each other (for example, education, job creation, land use, health); it uses case studies to examine policy consequences and options and develops qualitative and formal methods to analyze the dynamics and consequences of age structural change.

Book Investing in Your Child s Future

Download or read book Investing in Your Child s Future written by Nicola Field and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-05-12 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most parents dream of giving their children the best possible education. However an education – primary, secondary and tertiary – costs money. Parents of a child born in 2006 can pay approximately $250K for a child's lifetime education according to the latest research from the Australian Scholarships Group. And costs are constantly on the rise. Investing in Your Child's Future is aimed at parents and future parents, grandparents and other family members, and covers children's education from pre-school to tertiary studies. It is designed to show readers how they can secure and contribute to their children's future and can benefit from a higher education at the institution of their choice, without sacrificing their lifestyle or financial security, and regardless of their income. Investing in Your Child's Future shows readers how they can finance all, or some, of their children's education by planning ahead, implementing simple strategies and saving money as early and as regularly as possible. When your children are young, it's easy to delay funding their education as it is not an immediate expense. However, education is a major expense, regardless of whether you choose a private or public education, and the sooner you start saving, the more money you will accumulate, and the sooner you can stop worrying about your child's future.

Book The Double Standard

Download or read book The Double Standard written by Margrit Eichler and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1980, The Double Standard is a powerfully written book challenging the logic of much of the feminist literature in the social sciences. Although loyal to the tradition of feminist scholarship, Margaret Eichler argues that many feminist writers have unintentionally reinforced the sexual stereotypes that they seek to destroy, by using the wrong conceptual tools and the wrong language. The terms like ‘sex roles’ and ‘sex identity’ have been especially distorting because they are ambiguous, and in themselves become instruments of sexism. In both the language they employ and the explanations they offer, feminists must transcend sex as a criterion of social difference if they wish to overcome sexism in language and thought. This book argues that the double standard is the only relevant criterion for determining whether an identified sex difference is a matter of concern and not. (A double standard implies that two things which are the same are measured by different standards). Although usually employed in a strictly sexual sense the concept may be used for all types of behavior in which sex plays a role. The arguments of the book are controversial and provoking, but they sharpen the thinking of the feminist critique in a way that few other books have achieved. This is a must read for scholars and researchers or feminism, sociology of gender, and gender studies.

Download or read book Goodness is its Own Reward written by Dr. Jerry Allen McCuien and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2009-12-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a fundamental knowledge of the Bible and a comprehensive view of God’s interactions with man from the beginning. Adam’s fall from grace, and God’s redemptive plan was set in motion to restore what he had lost. God destroyed all flesh from off the face of the earth, except eight persons, He saved only Noah and his family. Scores of decades later, God made a covenant promise to a man called Abraham, which He said that He would bless his Seed, along with his descendants and the nations of the world. God would provide through Abraham hope, faith and love to his physical descendants and to the nations of the earth. God mightily blessed Abraham, his son Isaac, his grandson Jacob and his great-grandson Joseph, through whom God promises to bring salvation and blessings to the whole world. Good shall ultimately triumph victoriously over evil, as we shall discover in the life of Joseph. God re-directs evil to accomplish His divine will and purpose, thus humanity was saved.

Book Population Policy and Reproduction in Singapore

Download or read book Population Policy and Reproduction in Singapore written by Shirley Hsiao-Li Sun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the relationship between population policies and individual reproductive decisions in low-fertility contexts. Using the case study of Singapore, it demonstrates that the effectiveness of population policy is a function of competing notions of citizenship, and the gap between seemingly neutral policy incentives and the perceived and experienced disparate effects. Drawing on a substantial number of personal interviews and focus groups, the book analyzes the developmental welfare state’s overarching emphasis of citizen responsibility, and examines population policies that reinforce social inequalities and ignore cultural diversity. These factors combine to undermine elaborate state policy efforts in encouraging citizens’ biological reproduction. The book goes on to argue that in order to facilitate positive fertility decisions, the state needs to modify the “economic production at all cost” approach and pay much more attention to the importance of social rights. This suggests that the Singapore government might profitably approach the phenomenon of very low fertility with major initiatives similar to those of other advanced industrialized societies. This book offers a significant contribution to the literature on social policy, East Asian and Southeast Asian studies.
