Utagawa Hiroshige (in Japanese: 歌川広重), also called Andō Hiroshige (in Japanese: 安藤広重;), was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. He was born 1797 and died 12 October 1858. Ukiyo-e is a genre of Japanese art which flourished from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties; kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers; scenes from history and folk tales; travel scenes and landscapes; flora and fauna; and erotica. The term ukiyo-e (浮世絵) translates as "picture[s] of the floating world". Hiroshige is best known for his horizontal-format landscape series The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō, and for his vertical-format landscape series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo and for instance the 69 Stations of the Nakasendō. The main subjects of his work are considered atypical of the ukiyo-e genre, whose focus was more on beautiful women, popular actors, and other scenes of the urban pleasure districts of Japan's Edo period (1603-1868).

Book excerpt: This magnificent boxed set includes a silk- bound volume of stunning, accordion-fold, color reproductions of Hiroshige’s complete series, accompanied by a separate booklet with background and descriptions of each print. Roughly twenty-five years after Hokusai released his series of ukiyo-e prints depicting Japan’s most recognizable symbol, Hiroshige took on the subject as well—a common practice among the era’s printmakers. This volume features reproductions of the horizontal version of Hiroshige’s woodblock series, first published in 1852, and which reveal a mature artist working at the height of his powers. In the background of each of the views Mount Fuji is featured under varying vantage points and changing lights, towering over sites of sublime beauty, often animated by a few characters living in harmony with nature. These exquisite fold-out plates are perfect for appreciating Hiroshige’s eye for composition, his nontraditional use of line, and the subtle gradations of color and mood. Viewers can also learn much about daily life and culture in 19th-century Japan through carefully applied detail and symbolism. In his introductory booklet, Jocelyn Bouquillard provides captions for each print, as well as an appreciation of the remarkable and painstaking process of woodblock printing. Packaged in an elegant slipcase, these volumes reflect the beautiful artistry and traditions that are embodied in the prints themselves.

Book Hokusai 36 Views of Mount Fuji

Download or read book Hokusai 36 Views of Mount Fuji written by Cristina Berna and published by BOD GmbH DE. This book was released on 2023-12-20 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beauty of art is necessary for happiness. In everyday life the arts give that extra dimension to life that makes it a great adventure. The art and design in buildings, city planning, gardens and parks, roads, bridges, everything that we use daily contributes to a happy and fulfilling life. Ugly buildings, sloppy design, poor quality workmanship, littering and defacing contributes to a miserable life. Why would you want a miserable life? Why would you want to impose a miserable life on others? Hokusai was not only a truly great artist. He also sent a message to common people, who could afford to buy his low cost prints. He conveyed the beauty of majesty, the mount Fujijama, in life. He conveyed the beauty of scenery, he said to people, look around you and see and enjoy the beauty of the scenery. He conveyed the beauty of a good human life , the craftmanship in making the timber, building the boat, fishing, growing tea, enjoying tea with the scenery. The 36 Views of Mt Fuji are religious prints. But different from the typical Christian religious motif the humans are not shown focused on the diety all the time, even if Mt Fuji is shown to have a pervading influence on their lives. The admiration and worship of Mt Fuji is often shown as incidental a single traveler of the group casting a glance at the majestic mountain while the others are busy with the many other things to do. In other words a very realistic rendition on how the divine is taking part in everyday life.

Book Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Hoeido

Download or read book Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Hoeido written by Cristina Berna and published by BOD GmbH DE. This book was released on 2024-07-31 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Come on the journey from Edo, modern day Tokyo, to Kyoto, as experienced by Utagawa Hiroshige in, when he travelled the road to participate in an important procession in 1832. There were 53 post stations along this important road, apart from the start and terminus, in all 55 prints, which are all here in the order from Edo to Kyoto, In the Hoeido edition (1833-34). This was the most popular print series ever made in Japan. It was even more popular than Hokusai series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which had been recently published and which had influenced Hiroshige tremendously (ISBN ES 978-8-411-744-935). It is possible to travel the same road today and some villages are still looking quite like they did back then. The postal stations were constructed between 1601 and 1624.

Download or read book Hiroshige 53 Stations of the Tokaido Vertical written by Cristina Berna and published by BOD GmbH DE. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The official title for this work is "Pictures from the Famous Places of the Fifty-three Stations". Hiroshige produced these prints in 1855 more than 20 years after his first horizontal Hoeido series published 1833-34, which is included as thumbnails for comparison. It is instructive to see Hiroshiges use of his now mature experience as he develops the vertical format for the narrative. He does designs as he would do a photograph. He set the standard for landscape photography, without a camera. The Tokaido series was the most popular print series ever made in Japan. Hiroshige returned to this theme again and again, with delightful results. It is possible to travel the same road today and some villages are still looking quite like they did back then. The postal stations were constructed between 1601 and 1624.

Book Hokusai 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1805 1806

Download or read book Hokusai 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1805 1806 written by Cristina Berna and published by BOD GmbH DE. This book was released on 2024-08-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hokusai ́s 53 Stations of the Tokaido 1805 - 1806 is something completely different! It is different from his famous 36 Views of Mt Fuji, which are sublime artistic expressions distilling a long life ́s work. It is different from much of Hokusai ́s other well known work, like his 100 Views of Mt Fuji. But in that series Hokusai still retained a lot of the humor and the caricature found here. It is different from the many other well known 53 Stations of the Tokaido in that Hokusai does not focus on the landscape and the markers that Hiroshige and others showed. Instead Hokusai focus on the events, the interactions between the travellers, the tales that you will share with your friends when you get back home. It was a great and earlier contribution to the Tokaido literature

It usually takes place on the Eve of 31 October, the next day is the Christian feast All Saint ́s Day with remembering the dead. The name comes from Old English All Hallows Eve. The tradition was brought by Scottish and Irish immigrants to America and many believe it is really an old pagan Celtic tradition that was caried over into Christianity. We celebrate this happy event and hope you will enjoy our selection of photos and hope they will inspire you.
