Book The Italian Labor Market

Download or read book The Italian Labor Market written by Mr.Martin Schindler and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2009-03-01 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite improvements in labor market performance over the past decade, owing in part to past reforms, Italy's employment and productivity outcomes continue to lag behind those of its European peers. This paper reviews Italy's institutional landscape and labor market trends from a cross-country perspective, and discusses possible avenues for further reform. The policy discussion draws on international reform experience and on simulations based on a calibrated labor market matching model. A key lesson is that the details of reform design, and the sequencing of reforms, matter greatly for labor market outcomes and for the fiscal costs associated with these reforms.

Book Redistribution Through Public Employment

Download or read book Redistribution Through Public Employment written by Mr. Stephan Danninger and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1999-12-01 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the regional distribution of public employment in Italy and documents two sets of facts. The first is the use of public employment as a subsidy from the North to the less wealthy South. We calculate that about half of the wage bill in the South of Italy can be identified as a subsidy, with both the size of public employment and wage levels used as a redistributive device. The second set of facts concerns the negative effects of subsidized public employment on individuals’ attitudes toward job search, education, and “risk-taking” activities. We conclude that heavy reliance on public employment distorts incentives and discourages the development of market activities in the South.

Book The Italian Labor Market

Download or read book The Italian Labor Market written by Mr.Eswar Prasad and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1998-04-01 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a synthesis of existing and new empirical perspectives on the structure of the Italian labor market, using data at different levels of disaggregation. The analysis indicates that aggregate data mask considerable disparities in labor market outcomes across regions and demographic groups. The evolutions of sectoral wage and employment structures also point to some dimensions of labor market rigidities. A micro data set with individual data is then used to highlight key structural problems that affect labor supply and demand. The implications of these different strands of empirical analysis for the formulation and effective implementation of labor market policy are then discussed.

Book Non Standard Employment and Quality of Work

Download or read book Non Standard Employment and Quality of Work written by Tindara Addabbo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The international literature on non-standard employment has mostly focussed on its impact on employment, and more recently on working and living conditions. This volume explores these issues with special reference to Italy. Italy is characterized by very low participation rates (particularly women’s), a high degree of fragmentation of labour contracts and a very intense non-standard work diffusion that make this context a particularly interesting case for analysis. New elements of discussion are provided with reference to the interaction of non-standard work, employment probability and living conditions. Interesting insights on the impact of non-standard work on the transition to stable employment and workers’ careers emerge, suggesting a possible failure of companies’ internal systems of work evaluation. The effects on labour productivity and on companies’ performance are analysed. Within this framework, a new perspective on quality of work is suggested.

Book excerpt: This publication is part of a series of OECD country reports which review the main barriers to employment for older people and make policy recommendations for further action. This report on Italy is based on the proceedings of a seminar held in Rome in March 2004. It finds that there has been a trend towards rapid population ageing since the 1970's, resulting in Italy having the second highest old-age dependency ratio among OECD countries after Sweden currently, and this is ratio is expected to more than double by the year 2050. The report discusses the key challenges facing Italy's welfare system and the potential social and economic impacts of population ageing; the reforms implemented during the 1980's and the current market situation for older workers; the complementary pension system and other social protection measures; the complexities of the transition to retirement; options for promoting higher rates of participation among older people and better employment opportunities; removing demand-side barriers; older people's attitudes to work and educational attainment levels.

Book Aging and the Macroeconomy

Download or read book Aging and the Macroeconomy written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States is in the midst of a major demographic shift. In the coming decades, people aged 65 and over will make up an increasingly large percentage of the population: The ratio of people aged 65+ to people aged 20-64 will rise by 80%. This shift is happening for two reasons: people are living longer, and many couples are choosing to have fewer children and to have those children somewhat later in life. The resulting demographic shift will present the nation with economic challenges, both to absorb the costs and to leverage the benefits of an aging population. Aging and the Macroeconomy: Long-Term Implications of an Older Population presents the fundamental factors driving the aging of the U.S. population, as well as its societal implications and likely long-term macroeconomic effects in a global context. The report finds that, while population aging does not pose an insurmountable challenge to the nation, it is imperative that sensible policies are implemented soon to allow companies and households to respond. It offers four practical approaches for preparing resources to support the future consumption of households and for adapting to the new economic landscape.
