Book excerpt: The Life Of David is a message of meditation based on the Bible and written by Arthur Walkington Pink was born in Nottingham, England, to a corn merchant, a devout non-conformist of uncertain denomination, though probably a Congregationalist. Otherwise, almost nothing is known of Pink's childhood or education except that he had some ability and training in music. As a young man, Pink joined the Theosophical Society and apparently rose to enough prominence within its ranks that Annie Besant, its head, offered to admit him to its leadership circle. In 1908 he renounced Theosophy for evangelical Christianity. Desiring to become a minister but unwilling to attend a liberal theological college in England, Pink very briefly studied at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 1910 before taking the pastorate of the Congregational church in Silverton, Colorado. In 1912 Pink left Silverton, probably for California, and then took a joint pastorate of churches in rural Burkesville and Albany, Kentucky. In 1916, he married Vera E. Russell (1893–1962), who had been reared in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Pink's next pastorate seems to have been in Scottsville. Then the newlyweds moved in 1917 to Spartanburg, South Carolina, where Pink became pastor of Northside Baptist Church. By this time Pink had become acquainted with prominent dispensationalist Fundamentalists, such as Harry Ironside and Arno C. Gaebelein, and his first two books, published in 1917 and 1918, were in agreement with that theological position. Yet Pink's views were changing, and during these years he also wrote the first edition of The Sovereignty of God (1918), which argued that God did not love sinners and had deliberately created "unto damnation" those who would not accept Christ. Whether because of his Calvinistic views, his nearly incredible studiousness, his weakened health, or his lack of sociability, Pink left Spartanburg in 1919 believing that God would "have me give myself to writing." But Pink then seems next to have taught the Bible with some success in California for a tent evangelist named Thompson while continuing his intense study of Puritan writings.

John Goode, with his Stannary counterpart from Cornwall, William Timmins, have been brought together in an unlikely political alliance during the Jacobite Uprising in the Southwest. Plymouth, Exeter, and Bristol have fallen. The new Hanoverian King George the Third, eager to secure Protestant order in the two counties, persuades the Jacobite sympathiser, Sir Richard Vyvyan of Trelowarren, 3rd Baronet, to instead support the cause of Protestantism in exchange for devolvement of Cornwall with him becoming First Minister. George, persuaded by his Court of this folly, for reasons given that it would put an extra burden of taxation on the English by the consequent loss of revenue to the Crown of the duchy, has an about face, leaving the Stannary officers marked men. A directive has been issued by Hugh Boscawen of Tregothnan, Comptroller to the king, that they should be stopped and silenced. An order that will see the torturing to death of Timmins, and the execution of Goode for his demise. Hanged, having been found guilty, Goode returns from the grave to persuade Cluff to defend him further back in time to his trial that had already taken place. An act, unbeknown to Cluff, that his own father, also a barrister in the 1960s failed to achieve. For the consequence for Goode's execution is that his descendant, holding the key to saving 300 children being held hostage at a school in Bristol by a returned from the past, William Timmins, would not have been born. For William Timmins, the leader of The Democratic Republic for Cornwall, an action group with a deadly manifest, to rid Cornwall of the Duchy, and to break the hold the English monarchy has over the county is a determined man on a mission. With an eye on the present incumbent keeper of that 1337 Terra de Cornubia and Devonia, Cedric, the Prince of Wales - the man with a tortured soul - has them all in his cross-hairs. Barrister Cluff with the help of his girlfriend, has to go back and forth in time to confront all kinds characters in his attempts to find Goode's descendant. With a court case in a further shift of time that will see James the Third (the Old Pretender), on the throne of England, he is forced to provide evidence at a time when forensic science is useless. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that there is more to all of this than first appears. With the involvement of three police authorities, the secret services, the military, and an Order of Loyalty willing to kill and to give up their own blood for the continuation of heirs to this ancient royal line, Goode himself has a secret he is unaware.
