Download or read book Hints on the Portable Evidence of Christianity Classic Reprint written by Joseph John Gurney and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on the Portable Evidence of Christianity In the course of a social evening's conversation, I heard that eminent Christian philosopher, Dr. Chalmers, make some instructive remarks to the following effect: "The historical evidences of Christianity are abundantly sufficient to satisfy the scrutiny of the learned, and they are within the reach of all well educated persons. But the internal evidences of the truth have a still wider influence, for they are open and intelligible to every sincere inquirer. Every man who reads the Bible with attention, and observes the value and excellence of the book - every man who compares what it says of mankind with his own experience, and marks the fitness of its mighty scheme of doctrine to his own spiritual need as a sinner in the sight of God - is furnished with practical proof of the divine origin of our religion. I love this evidence; I call it the Portable evidence of Christianity." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scientific Aspects of Christian Evidences Among well-founded beliefs, Christianity is not peculiar in being incapable of demonstrative proof and in being open to a variety of objections which are difficult to answer. Of the misleading tendencies in modern thought, one of the most serious is that of setting up an unreasonable standard of proof as the necessary basis for active belief. Indeed, in a vast number of instances, the insistence upon experimental or demonstrative proof is so unreasonable that it amounts to a species of insanity. Many who yield themselves to this tendency come to distrust ordinary evidence just as a certain class of insane persons do their best friends. Their condition of mind is like that of those who are so afraid of poison that it is with the utmost difficulty that they are persuaded that anything is free from it, while life is too short to admit of a preliminary mathematical demonstration of the fact. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Christian Evidence Commands the entire ground. Outworks may be Of more or less value; but as long as the key Of the position can be held in force, the place is safe. I am using the language Of metaphor, but its application to the defence Of Christianity is Obvious. Let us then follow the example Of our military generals, and concentrate our defence on those points which are vital to its truth as a Divine revelation; and if there is a single key which commands the entire Christian position, let us order our entire argument so as to occupy it with our utmost strength. D, Vol. 6 Christianity on this ground too, as on many others, ' has, we think, not only won for herself the safety of a defence but has been enriched by the spoils of a victory. If m the first Book of this work, we have chiefly to do with the miraculous argument in the abstract; we pass in the second to that argument in the concrete, or consider the actual evidence for the miracles of the gospel. Even in this department it will be found to be more a work of principles than of details; and there are few of its lessons which we should, in opposition to a' prevalent bias, so like adequately to impress on the understand ing of the reader - as the inherently greater strength of evidence given by the scriptural than by the ex -scriptural, or by the origi nal than the subsequent witnesses for the truth' of the evangeli cal history; and also the far superior value of the Christian to the heathen testimonies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Logic of Christian Evidences As the connection clearly shows, the oft-quoted saying of Coleridge, that he was weary of the word "Evidences of Christianity," is a rhetorical exclamation meaning no more than that the prevalent mode of presenting those evidences in his time was distasteful to him. Coleridge relied more exclusively than some upon the so-called internal evidences of Christianity; but these are "evidences," nevertheless; and must be comprehended in order to be felt. In our own day also, the weight of high authority is given to the opinion that there is no more call for discussion of the evidences of Christianity, since believers are already satisfied with the grounds of their faith, and unbelievers will not give attention to anything which may be written upon the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christus Auctor: A Manual of Christian Evidences Blaise pascal in his Pensees has left frag mentary materials for an apologetic treatment of Christianity, which he hoped to have made the work of his life. For so great a task he declared ten healthy years were required, while God had given to him only four sick ones. For more than twenty years, as the writer of these lines has had opportunity, he has pon dered the Evidences of Christianity and stud ied many of the masterpieces of the literature of the subject. But they have been busy years, crowded with toil and care, which denied him the leisure, if he had possessed the capacity, required for attaining the learning necessary to a just presentation of even the outlines of the great argument.
