Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on the Education of Children It is true, the work is arduous, and attended with great difficulty; not only on account of the many bad examples which are continually before the eyes of children, but on account of the evil propensities of their natures. We are informed in the divine word, that theyare born like a wild ass' colt, and as soon as they are capable, go astray, speaking lies. A child left to himself; to walk in the way of his own heart, will most surely bring his mother to shame, by his evil practices. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Home Teaching These Hints on Home Training and Teaching (although it is hoped they may be of use to governesses and private tutors) are addressed also to parents. The increased educational opportunities now afforded to girls and women justify the belief that in the next generation mothers will take a large part in the teach ing and training of the young, at all events in the middle classes and, even where parents have not the leisure or the desire to superintend in detail the studies of their children, they can go far to form in them those habits which constitute the foundation of their intellectual as well as their moral future, and can assist the day-school or the private tutor by an influence always most valuable, when wise. To enable parents thus to contribute to the training of their children, is one of the objects of this treatise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Child-Training Whatever theory of child-training may show itself in these Hints, has been arrived at by induc tion in the process of my experiences with children since I had to deal with the matter practically, apart from any preconceived view of the principles involved. Every suggestion in these Hints is an outcome of experiment and observation in my life as a father and a grandfather, while it has been carefully considered in the light of the best lessons of practical educators on every side. These Hints were begun for the purpose of giv ing help to a friend. They were continued because of the evident popular interest in them. They are sent out in this completed form in the hope that they will prove of service to parents who are feel ing the need of something more practical in the realm of child-training than untested theories. Book Socializing the Child

Download or read book Socializing the Child written by Sarah A. Dynes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Socializing the Child: A Guide to the Teaching of History in the Primary Grades A marked characteristic of the new century in all progressive nations is the quickened interest in the child and his education. Owing to this deepened interest in both the nature and the nurture of the child, professional educators are beginning to look more earnestly to history, sociology, psychology, and ethics for guidance and help in their work. This book treats certain aspects of social education in primary grades with the greatest possible simplicity. Especial emphasis is placed upon ways and means of enlarging the child's experience so as to favor the development of the historic sense. The various solutions of the problems of procuring shelter, food, clothing; of hearing burdens, of traveling; of exchanging goods and of celebrating holidays, make an excellent background for later work in history. Because each of the various countries selected by the author for instruction in primary grades solves these problems in its own characteristic way the contrasts arc conspicuous, and serve as a stimulus to both observation and further curiosity concerning human institutions and discoveries. Because each school is a center of community life, each pupil can he trained into responsible membership in that community. He can be saturated with the spirit of service and provided with the instruments of effective self-direction suited to his stage of development. The problems there solved reflect the life of the larger society of which the school is a part. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Nursery Lesson Book

Download or read book The Nursery Lesson Book written by Philip Gengembre Hubert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nursery Lesson Book: A Guide for Mothers in Teaching Young Children In making a young child begin to write words as soon as he reads them, my experience has been that it is not wise to allow printing, which at best is but a makeshift, and is liable to form habits which the child must get rid of later on. In writing, the slate, or the sand-table, as suggested by Richter, will be found invaluable the latter is simply a board with ridges at each side, holding a few quarts of sand spread out in a thin layer. With a splint of wood a child can make endless letters and figures. In writing, as in reading, words and not letters are to be aimed at; and while the child may have an alphabet for reference, it is not necessary to memorize the special order in which letters are placed in the alphabet. With drawing, attempts, even of the crudest kind, are required, and there is nothing that a child Of three or four years of age will work at more persistently than the drawing of simple figures. The object lesson must be left largely to the intelligence of the mother, as it is not within the Scope of this book to do more than suggest an outline in this direction. As an illustration of what an object lesson can be made to teach, I cannot do better than give the following sketch of a lesson upon cotton which it was my privilege to hear recently. The children were Older than those in the nursery, but the principle will apply even in nursery teaching. The pupils were asked to take out their handkerchiefs and examine them. A few questions by the teacher made it clear that while some Of the children knew that their handkerchiefs were made of cotton, Very few had any notion as to what cotton was, where it came from, and how it had become a handkerchief. Then the teacher described the cotton fields, and pointed out the Cotton States on the map; there was a picture of a cotton field in bloom, with the negroes gathering the cotton; 3 dried cotton plant, with the boll about to burst, the cotton sticking out, was passed around the class. Then a miniature gin was put upon the teacher's table, and each child worked it so as to understand exactly how the cotton was separated from the seed; a spinning-machine, very crude, but showing the principle, was next brought into use, and some thread was manufactured by the class; finally, this thread was woven by a little loom, and a bit of very rough cotton cloth was turned out, each child having had an Opportunity to do part of the work and. To see how it was done. It was then Shown that this bit Of stw manufactured by the class was really Of the same kind as the handkerchiefs Of the children. It is safe to say that every one of those children knew more about cotton cloth at the end of that lesson than half the graduates Of our high schools. The time and labor required to Obtain the material for this lesson - the dried cotton plant, the toy gin, spinning machine, and loom, were insignificant as compared with the results achieved. Every mother would find it the easiest thing in the world to make a collection for nursery teaching, which would be a source Of constant delight and instruction to the children; every walk might produce something for the collection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of Girls IN this, which has been so aptly termed the woman's cen tury, no book that bears upon the aims and methods that should characterize the training of girls, can fail to possess a certain intrinsic inteiest. The following treatise on that sub ject was written by the Archbishop of Cambray while he was still only the Abbe de Fenelon, for his friend, the Duchess de Beauvilliers, as a practical guide in the education of her children. Given to the public in 1687, it was at once received with the greatest favor, and laid the foundation of that high reputation which afterwards brought such distinguished honors to its author. Lamartine and other critics have compared it favorably with the celebrated Emile of Rousseau, and denominated it a masterpiece of delicacy and reason. Download or read book The Education of the Child Classic Reprint written by Ellen Key and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Education of the Child Neither harsh nor tender parents suspect the truth expressed by Carlyle when he said that the marks of a noble and original tempera ment are wild, strong emotions, that must be controlled by a discipline as hard as steel. People either strive to root out passions altogether, or they abstain from teaching the child to get them under control. To suppress the real personality of the child, and to supplant it with another personality continues to be a pedagogical crime common to those who announce loudly that education should only develop the real individual nature of the child. They are still not convinced that egoism on the part of the child is justified. Just as little are they convinced of the possibility that evil can be changed into good.
