Download or read book Hints on Fruit Growing Classic Reprint written by H. E. V. Pickstone and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Fruit Growing We trust the following Hints to Growers may be found of some little service to some of those who are following and who intend embarking in our Industry and also to the Dilettante who finds amusement in the garden. We have tried to make our remarks practical and the ideas intelligible. Several paragraphs have been taken over from foreign sources, as we found there our own ideas very clearly expressed. Advice tendered herein to growers is not theoretical but is based in nearly every instance on personal experience, or the experience of others that has come under our observation. The whole has been brought thoroughly up to the date of cur latest experience, which in some instances readers will see it has been found necessary to alter or modify from those contained in our last catalogue. No attempt has been made to deal with technical questions such as the character of soils, the action of manures, the budding and grafts of trees, the circulation of sap, c.;all these matters can be found in the numerous standard works on fruit culture written by much abler pens than ours, and by men who have technical knowledge which we make no claim to possess. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints and Encouragements for Profitable Fruit Growing The following treatise was mostly written as 3. Prize Essay, in competition with about sixteen others, for the Gold Medal of the Fruiterers' Company, last year. It was sent to the Judges under the motto of Hope On, and they reported that it was one of those deserving to be considered and described as particularly meritorious. The terms and conditions of that competition stated that the object is to encourage Fruit Culture by Cottagers, and others with small holdings, as a substitute for, or adjunct to, the ordinary methods of cropping their gardens and allotments with roots or other vegetables. This Essay differs from that to which the prize was awarded in one important aspect, namely, that it deals with every variety of fruit usually grown in England, whilst only the ordinary orchard fruits and the hardy bush fruits are treated of in the Prize Essay. Book The Fruit Growers Guide Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fruit Growers Guide Book Classic Reprint written by E. H. Favor and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit-Growers Guide-Book This little book has been prepared as a means of assisting many persons who have answered the call "back to the land," and who are undertaking the growing of fruit on a commercial scale. It is not intended as an exhaustive treatise on fruit growing, as such is manifestly impossible within the size of such a book. Neither is it expected to tell all that is to be told about fruit growing. Its purpose is to serve for the guidance of the beginner and as a handy reference manual for the busy orchardist. The foundation upon which this little book is based is the many letters which reach the office of The Fruit-Grower, containing inquiries about many phases of fruit-growing. These inquiries come from all parts of the United States and from Canada, and cover almost every phase of horticultural work, although in preparing this book only the general problem of growing the ordinary deciduous orchard fruits has been considered. This problem has been considered in a very general way without specific directions for any particular fruit. Where details for a given fruit have been needed, the treatment of the subject has been boiled down to as concise a form as possible. Book The Fruit Grower s Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fruit Grower s Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by John Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fruit Grower's Guide, Vol. 1 It may be expected that few thoughtful persons will be inclined to dispute those propositions; especially, perhaps, the last of them. Fruit, in its best condition, is the purest of food, health-giving, life-sustaining and delicious. It was the first food of the human family, and it has been the last food of countless thousands in the decline of life, accepted and enjoyed when coarser was rejected, and so it will be to the end of time. Yet the full value of fruit is by no means generally appreciated. It is regarded by many, if not the majority, as a luxury 2 and a luxury it undoubtedly is to vast numbers of the dwellers in populous cities, while there are several districts in which the inhabitants either do not have nearly so much as they wish, and as would be good for them, or they have to consume what is inferior. A full, good, and cheap supply of the different sorts of fruit that can be produced in this country would be of enormous benefit to the community. How, where, and by whom fruits of various kinds, and of the best quality, can be produced it is the object of this work to point out, and every cultural detail advanced will be founded on experience gained in orchards, gardens, and fruit-growing establishments, with and without the aid of glass structures, in various parts of the kingdom. Until recent years the importance of systematic fruit culture in the gardens and fields of Great Britain had not been adequately recognised. The pursuit is one of the most enjoy able that can be indulged in by all persons who have, or can acquire, land suitable for the purpose. Home-grown fruit is a necessity of life, and the resources of the United Kingdom are equal to the production of the leading kinds in the greatest excellence; indeed it is questionable if so many fruits can be grown equally well in any other part of the globe as in Great Britain and Ireland. Several of the most popular of those fruits, which are being more and more regarded as food products, are indigenous to our land; hence the soil and climate are suitable for their development, or can be made so. Book Successful Fruit Culture

Download or read book Successful Fruit Culture written by Samuel T. Maynard and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Fruit Culture: A Practical Guide to the Cultivation and Propagation of Fruits During the past ten or fifteen years great progress has been made in the cultivation and care of our hardy fruits and especially in the varieties grown, the methods of packing, shipping and marketing, and during this time few books have been written which have kept up with this progress. This progress and the knowledge of insect and fungous pests and their destruction has been largely recorded in scientific books and papers from the numerous experiment stations, with little from the practical and practicing fruit growers, and there is a growing need of a condensed work giving, in plain language, a summary of the scientific progress made, together with the practice of the most successful fruit growers in various sections of the country. Especially is this information needed that those just starting out in the business of fruit growing, or the village home owner who wishes to grow a small quantity of fruit for family consumption, may find in a condensed form the information necessary for success. It is, therefore, the aim of the author to make a book that is up to date in every particular and to cover the entire practice of fruit growing from the starting of the seed or cutting to the marketing of the fruit, though in many cases works devoted to special fruits may be more complete. It is written from the standpoint of the practical fruit grower who is striving to make his business profitable by growing the best fruit possible and at the least cost. Book Hints on Vegetable and Fruit Farming Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hints on Vegetable and Fruit Farming Classic Reprint written by Charles Whitehead and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hints on Vegetable and Fruit Farming Foreign' competition will not interfere withllthese industries.l This game, 'at all events, is in the hands of the home producers. The chief drawback to the full development of this trade 1s the unsatisfactory present mode of distribution 'of nearly 'all kinds of farm produce, and especially of these minor kinds. In' existing circumstances, the producers' get the minimum value and the consumers have to pay the maximum price. The pernicious system of salesmen and middlemen, and the routine of markets, hinder enterprise and check production. In no cases 'is this so' much felt as in those of vegetables and fruit, which are confined to a few centres - markets, for the most part, utterly inadequate for anything like general distribution. Even with the system now holding, it is fully believed that the production of vegetables, salad plants, and fruit could be very largely extended, to the gain of the cultivators and to the infinite satisfaction of would be consumers who live in towns, and of those who have no gardens, who constitute a vast proportion of the population. This paper, therefore, has been written at the request of the Council of the'royal Agricultural Society, to point out the importance and advantage of adding these special cultures to the ordinary farm crops, and to give some practical information as to the most desirable sorts of vegetables and fruits for this purpose, together with details as to the modes of cultivating them, and the circumstances of soil, climate, and situation that are required.
