Book Sizing of Highway Culverts and Bridges

Download or read book Sizing of Highway Culverts and Bridges written by Bruce M. McEnroe and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report examines the methods and criteria that highway engineers have used to size culverts and bridges in Kansas and throughout the U.S. from the start of highway construction to the present. The focus is directed to methods actually employed by highway engineers rather than methods described in the research literature. Hydrologic methods are categorized as early or modern, according to whether a specific recurrence interval is associated with the design. Modern hydrologic methods are based on statistical analyses of systematic records of streamflow or rainfall data; the desired recurrence interval is an input to the design. In the early days, culverts and bridges were sized by empirical methods developed from experiences with existing structures during floods.

This book was released on 1962 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paper 1: A discussion is conducted of the applications of welded aluminum in highway structures from the standpoints of alloy recommendations and mechanical properties of the material, structural members, design features and specifications, welding processes, welder qualification, and precautions and methods in field welding. Paper 2: An evaluation and comparison is made of the structural load capacity of aluminum alloy culvert pipe with existing methods of analysis. Theoretical considerations are discussed, and the work is supported by extensive structural fill tests. A fill height table based on such considerations is included for use in design.

Book Highway Bridges and Culverts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highway Bridges and Culverts Classic Reprint written by Charles Hamilton Hoyt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Bridges and Culverts Bridge building in the United States is of comparatively recent accomplishment. The early settlers were compelled to ford the streams or cross them on rafts or in dugouts. When Washington crossed the Delaware with his army, there were no bridges over that river, and history records many instances of streams being forded with untold hardship and the consequent disasters and delays. Such incidents become serious matters when, for example, physicians are unable to reach the sick or injured because Of impassable fords or are compelled to expose themselves to unnecessary danger. Traffic conditions in general are demoralized by unsafe bridges or culverts. Pontoon bridges have served temporary needs in many instances, but especially in warfare. Mention is made Of their use very early in history, and one Of the most notable occasions was when the Per sian army under Xerxes crossed the Hellespont on two pontoon bridges consisting, one of 360 vessels and the other of 314. These were anchored head and stern alongside each other, with their keels in the direction of the current. The Romans had wickerwork vessels covered with hides destined to support the timber platforms of a bridge. These formed a part of the train Of their armies throughout the history of the Empire until 476 A. D. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
