Traffic conditions in general are demoralized by unsafe bridges or culverts. Pontoon bridges have served temporary needs in many instances, but especially in warfare. Mention is made Of their use very early in history, and one Of the most notable occasions was when the Per sian army under Xerxes crossed the Hellespont on two pontoon bridges consisting, one of 360 vessels and the other of 314. These were anchored head and stern alongside each other, with their keels in the direction of the current. The Romans had wickerwork vessels covered with hides destined to support the timber platforms of a bridge. They are as permanent as stone, and have a less cost. Masonry bridges and aqneducts built by the Romans are still standing, and some of them in use. A few old cast iron bridges remain, dating back a century or more, but a majority of the modern ones built of wrought iron and steel have a very limited existence. Forty years ago, steel bridges were believed to be permanent structures, but it is now well known that they do not generally last longer than from twenty to thirty years. Solid concrete bridges are superior to those in which reinforcing metal is required for resisting tensile stresses in the arch ring. Continuous water-soaking reduces the adhesion of concrete to steel by about 100 percent, and the effect of shocks and vibrations also tends to destroy the bond. It frequently occurs that cracks develop, sufficiently large to admit water, and when water and moisture reach the reinforcing metal, it is then only a few years before the metal is destroyed by rust. An old wire suspension bridge that recently failed, was examined and reported on by the writer, and it was found that failure occurred because of the rusting and breaking of the wire cables embedded in the anchorage. In making this compilation, the author has been governed by no blind adherence to what he has already writ ten, but has made changes wherever they have appeared to be advisable. One of the chief objects of this work is to reduce the labor of iron highway-bridge designing to a minimum, for which purpose every thing that could be so arranged has been tabulated. Not only are the exact sizes of hip verticals, joists, floor beams, beam hangers, lateral rods and struts, portal rods and struts, vibration rods, intermediate struts, lattice bars, stay plates, etc., given for all practical cases, but also the most economic dimensions of panels and trusses, and dead loads, so exact that by their use all necessity for a second trial is avoided. These tables, it is hoped, will prove useful to those in the actual practice of bridge designing, enabling them to greatly reduce the time required to make diagrams of stresses and sections and estimates of cost.
