While that is the public perception, residents say they live in the county to enjoy lifes simple pleasuresvisiting friends, watching softball games, or taking drives in the country. It is a unique and beautiful place; rugged, wooded hills in the north gently cascade to rolling, fertile terrain in the south. Washington County was made up of 35 separate communities, now anchored by the incorporated towns of Springfield, the county seat; Willisburg; and Mackville. Images of America: Washington County features photographs of the areas rich culture, the strong roles of religion and education, the agrarian base, and, most importantly, its families. The photographs depict the enjoyment of living and prospering in Washington County.

Book excerpt: Washington County, Georgia was formed in 1784 by the Georgia Legislature, and the county seat, Sandersville, began at the crossing of two Indian trails. Over the course of its long and storied history, the county has seen a prosperous agricultural period when "cotton was king," a decline in profitable farming that stunted the county's growth and economy, and a resurgence in productivity and a boost to the local economy with the mining of kaolin. Today, there are six processing plants and numerous mines attracting scientists and geologists from many countries. Washington Countians continue to enjoy the peace and tranquility of a rural lifestyle while looking ahead to a promising future.

Book excerpt: In honor of George Washington and the colonists' separation from the king's rule, the territory once known as Kings County was renamed Washington County. Rich in history, this once densely wooded region was transformed, and by the dawn of the 20th century, many villages and hamlets had taken root. In the early 1900s, photographer Walter Rogers captured the evolution of this area, and the images in Washington County are all drawn from his collection of glass-plate negatives. The text originates from historic accounts during this period. Readers will encounter pirate treasure in Richmond, sea serpents, Kickapoo Indian medicine men, village mishaps, and more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A companion to Images of America: Washington County, this book, Washington County Revisited, depicts more of the area's rich history. In an attempt to thoroughly cover this county in Virginia, Washington County Revisited explores the history of settlements that were once major community centers, including Lodi, Blackwell's Chapel, Rich Valley, Lindell, Bethel, Taylor's Valley, Hayter's Gap, Clinchburg, and Alvarado. Learn even more of the fascinating history surrounding the railroad towns of Damascus, Glade Spring, and Meadowview. Officially formed in 1776 from Fincastle County, the county was named for Gen. George Washington, who was then serving as commander in chief of the Continental Army. Washington County holds the distinction of being the first geographical region to be named for the first U.S. president. With more than 200 images, Washington County Revisited provides a unique visit to this rural region that once served as a gateway to the West along the Great Wagon Road and saw thousands of settlers and goods pass through to uncharted lands.

Book The Mysterious Black Migration 1800 1820

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story that unfolds in this work manifests the pursuit of one of the many historical mysteries that plague the early history of people of African descent in New York State - a mass migration of thousands of African descendants to Washington County, New York at the turn of the 19th century. The impact of this de-valued history and its absence from the historical record has distorted the recollection and remembrance of people of African descent in New York, whose ancestors were trapped in the confinement of enslavement and second-class citizenship. This unrecorded migration transpired while New York was beginning to alter its highly profitable economic system from an enslavement-based economy to a more capitalist system of production. They journeyed to Washington County, families and expectations in tow under the suggestion of a rumor of opportunity and anticipation that a better life was possible for them at the end of this arduous journey. Newly disposed of the day to day dehumanizing nature of enslavement, they struggled to find a more sustainable, prosperous and humane way of life. The correlation between my family, the Van Vrankens and the thousands of other individuals of African descent who migrated to Washington County during this period, is the personal, festering wound of omission that is still not healed or resolved. This work is a continuing byproduct of genealogical research begun by the author in 2000. It represents the second in a series of books relating to his families experiences in early New York. The first Book A Far Cry From Freedom: Gradual Abolition (1799-1827) New York States Crime Against Humanity, was published in 2006.
