Download or read book Highlands and Islands Vol 1 of 2 written by William Hamilton Maxwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highlands and Islands, Vol. 1 of 2: Being a Sequel to "Wild Sports of the West" Of a fresh-run salmon will reward the pilgrim age; and if he fill a creel - as I have done in two brief hours - will he not marvel that, in piscatoral ignorance, unhappy citizens of credit and renown waste time about Lea Bridge, and money in adjacent hostelries, where some flavour less fish, which on the Borders would be kicked away, is immortalized in a glass case; and the skeleton of a pike, which, as a capture, every cowboy in Connemara could emulate, is held out above the mantel-piece as an encouragement for Cockneys to wet their feet, by proving that marshy waters are not ungrateful, and rheuma tism shall have its reward. Book Unearthing the Past to Forge the Future

Download or read book Unearthing the Past to Forge the Future written by Tobias Wolffhardt and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For much of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the British East India Company consolidated its rule over India, evolving from a trading venture to a colonial administrative force. Yet its territorial gains far outpaced its understanding of the region and the people who lived there, and its desperate efforts to gain knowledge of the area led to the 1815 appointment of army officer Colin Mackenzie as the first Surveyor General of India. This volume carefully reconstructs the life and career of Mackenzie, showing how the massive survey of India that he undertook became one of the most spectacular and wide-ranging knowledge production initiatives in British colonial history.

Book Landscapes of Protest in the Scottish Highlands after 1914

Download or read book Landscapes of Protest in the Scottish Highlands after 1914 written by Iain J.M. Robertson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1918, the implementation of agrarian change in the Scottish Highlands threatened another wave of unemployment and eviction for the land-working population, which led to widespread and varied social protest. Those who had been away on war service (and their families) faced returning to exactly the same social and economic conditions in the Scottish Highlands they had hoped they had left behind in the struggle to make ’a land fit for heroes’. Widespread and varied social protest rapidly followed. It argues that, previously, there has been a failure to capture fully the geography, chronology typology and rate of occurrence of these events. The book not only offers new insights and a greater understanding of what was happening in the Highlands in this period, but illustrates how a range of forms of protest were used which demand attention, not least for the fact that these events, unlike most of the earlier Land Wars period, were successful. There are functioning townships in the Highlands today that owe their existence to the land invasions of the 1920s. The book innovatively concentrates on formulating explanation and interpretation from within and looks to the crofting landscape as base, means and motive to disturbance and interpretation. It proposes that protest is much more convincingly understood as an expression of environmental ethics from 'the bottom up' coming increasingly into conflict with conservationist views expressed from 'the top down' It focuses on individual case studies in order to engage more convincingly with an important evidential base - that of popular memory of land disturbances - and to adopt a frame and lens through which to explore the fluid and contingent nature of protest performances. Based upon the belief that in the study of landscapes of social protest the old shibboleth of space as solely passive setting and symbolic register is no longer tenable is paid here to nature/culture interactions, to vernacular ecological b

Book Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic

Download or read book Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic written by Ramona Harrison and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-08 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Human Ecodynamics in the North Atlantic: A Collaborative Model of Humans and Nature through Space and Time, Ramona Harrison and Ruth A. Maherhave compiled a series of separate research projects conducted across the North Atlantic region that each contribute greatly to anthropological archaeology. This book assembles a regional model through which the reader is presented with a vivid and detailed image of the climatic events and cultures which have occupied these seas and lands for roughly a 5000-year period. It provides a model of adaptability, resilience, and sustainability that can be applied globally. First, visiting the Northern Isles of Scotland in the Orkney Islands, the reader is taken through the archaeology from the Neolithic Period through World War II in the face of sea-level rise and rapidly eroding coastlines. The Shetland Islands then reveal a deep-time study of one large-scale Iron Age excavation. On to the northern coasts of Norway, where information about late medieval maritime peoples is explained. Iceland explores human–environment interaction and implications of climate change presented from the Viking Age through the Early Modern Era. Rounding out the North Atlantic Region is Greenland, which sheds light on the Norse in the late Viking Age and the Middle Ages.
