Book A Handbook of Highland County and a Supplement to Pendleton and Highland History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Handbook of Highland County and a Supplement to Pendleton and Highland History Classic Reprint written by Oren Frederic Morton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook of Highland County and a Supplement to Pendleton and Highland History The original purpose of this volume was to furnish a descriptive and industrial write-up of Highland county. But the author's History of Highland has been out of print for several years. The History of Pendleton is not yet out of print, but he could not realize his intention of converting the remnant of the stock into a revised edition. This Handbook has therefore been made to serve the secondary purpose of bringing the two county histories down to date, particularly with reference to their share in the World War. The present book has not only a value in itself, but it imparts a new value to the Histories of Pendleton and Highland, as published in 1910 and 1911. The chapter on the World War consolidates in some degree the stories or the two counties which relate to that event. But those sections which seemingly relate wholly to Pendleton are of interest to readers in Highland, and vice versa. And even those topics which pertain to the Handbook as simply a Handbook of Highland County, are in very large degree applicable to Pendleton as well. The two counties are sister counties, in geography as well as in population. The additions and corrections to the History of Highland are in large part derived from marginal notes written by John M. Colaw on the pages of his private copy. Important contributions have been received also from Walter P. Campbell, the Rev. M. Ernest Hansel, and Mrs. Helen M. G. Paul, all three now living outside of their native county. Without such help as this the author could have done very little in that line. The roster of Pendleton soldiers in the World War is based upon the record preserved by H. M. Calhoun. His industry and plans in keeping in touch with the men called to the colors, and in preserving a record of the replies to his letters is an unusual display of thoughtfulness, and is highly commendable. In those instances where for one cause or another, there was neglect in acknowledging his inquiries, the fault does not rest with Mr. Calhoun. In Highland there is a similar acknowledgment to G. Lee Chew, who has taken great care to preserve a record for his own county. The author would also extend his thanks to all other persons who have actively aided the present undertaking. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The County of Highland: A History of Highland County, Ohio, From the Earliest Days, With Special Chapters on the Bench and Bar, Medical Profession Educational Development, Industry and Agriculture and Biographical Sketches In the study of the history of our own county, we must remember certain peculiarities, which, though apparently of small account, are influential elements in material progress, and means toward the for mation of its character. The early traditions are potent factors in its progress. The memory of its heroes, and the battle fields where their laurels were won; of its seers of science, its prophets of cultured minds; of its poets who have won the people's heart; all the stirring recollections of the romantic past, which flush the cheek and brighten the eye; all these are substantial tributaries to a country's education, and aid in forming an estimate of its career and destiny. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical and Traditional Sketches of Highland Families and of the Highlands Of the author, or perhaps I should more properly say, the reciter of these tales, it would not become me, his son, to speak in. Terms of praise. I may, however, say, without exposing myself to censure, that from his infancy he gave a greedy ear to the recital of old stories; and when, as at was, and still is, the custom of the country, the fathers, grandfathers, and patriarchs of the town assembled together in the winter evenings and told the tales of other times, he would sit in the chimney nook in wrapt attention listening to their conversation. This predilection of his youth grew with his growth, and strengthened with his years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glencreggan: Or, a Highland Home in Cantire, Vol. 1 of 2 In the following pages I essay to guide my readers to new ground, even to "the Land's End" of Scotland, - for such is the English meaning of the Gaelic word Cantire, Ceantire, "the Land's End," which is the southern part of the county of Argyle, and is a peninsula only twelve miles removed from Ireland, washed by the Atlantic, and flanked by the Isles of Arran and the southern Hebrides. I venture to call Cantire new ground, for in truth it is somewhat of a terra incognita, and is but rarely visited, and has been but barely mentioned by the guide-books, some of which indeed do not bestow any description upon Cantire, evidently regarding it as a Western Highland district which no tourist would desire to explore. Book excerpt: In Highland Fling—Nancy Mitford’s first novel, published in 1931—a set of completely incompatible and hilariously eccentric characters collide in a Scottish castle, where bright young things play pranks on their stodgy elders until the frothy plot climaxes in ghost sightings and a dramatic fire. Inspired in part by Mitford’s youthful infatuation with a Scottish aristocrat, her story follows young Jane Dacre to a shooting party at Dulloch Castle, where she tramps around a damp and chilly moor on a hunting expedition with formidable Lady Prague, xenophobic General Murgatroyd, one-eyed Admiral Wenceslaus, and an assortment of other ancient and gouty peers of the realm, while falling in love with Albert, a surrealist painter with a mischievous sense of humor. Lighthearted and sparkling with witty banter, Highland Fling was Mitford’s first foray into the delightful fictional world for which the author of The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate later became so celebrated. With an Introduction by Julian Fellowes, creator of Downton Abbey.
