Book Analytic and Algebraic Geometry

Download or read book Analytic and Algebraic Geometry written by Jeffery D. McNeal and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Analytic and algebraic geometers often study the same geometric structures but bring different methods to bear on them. While this dual approach has been spectacularly successful at solving problems, the language differences between algebra and analysis also represent a difficulty for students and researchers in geometry, particularly complex geometry. The PCMI program was designed to partially address this language gulf, by presenting some of the active developments in algebraic and analytic geometry in a form suitable for students on the 'other side' of the analysis-algebra language divide. One focal point of the summer school was multiplier ideals, a subject of wide current interest in both subjects. The present volume is based on a series of lectures at the PCMI summer school on analytic and algebraic geometry. The series is designed to give a high-level introduction to the advanced techniques behind some recent developments in algebraic and analytic geometry. The lectures contain many illustrative examples, detailed computations, and new perspectives on the topics presented, in order to enhance access of this material to non-specialists."--Publisher's description.

Book Brief Course in Analytic Geometry

Download or read book Brief Course in Analytic Geometry written by J. H. Tanner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Brief Course in Analytic Geometry In their "Elementary Course in Analytic Geometry" the authors of this book endeavored to prepare a text suitable for the general student, as well as for the student who desires a definite scientific training, including preparation for advanced mathematical study. The success of the "Elementary Course" has been demonstrated by its adoption and continued use in many of the leading colleges and scientific schools. Since the publication of that text, however, there has been a growing desire for a somewhat briefer book preserving the same rigor of proofs and careful analysis, but omitting or shortening the less important details. The "Brief Course in Analytic Geometry" is prepared to meet this demand. The chief features of the "Elementary Course" which have won such universal approval have been included. These are: (1) An extended introduction to the method of the analytic geometry, - showing the value of the interpretation of the negative number by means of coordinates, the relation of the locus to the equation, and the use of the equation to find and demonstrate properties of the locus. (2) Introduction of the demonstration of general theorems by numerical examples, in order to make clear the method used before bringing in the added difficulties of literal notation and general proofs. (3) The use of some intrinsic properties of curves, to emphasize further the fact that the coordinates are a tool, an intermediate device, not essential to the properties which are studied by their aid. Book Introduction to Analytic Geometry

Download or read book Introduction to Analytic Geometry written by Percey Franklyn Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Analytic Geometry In preparing this volume the authors have endeavored to write a drill book for beginners which presents, in a manner conforming with modern ideas, the fundamental concepts of the subject. The subject-matter is slightly more than the minimum required for the calculus, but only as much more as is necessary to permit of some choice on the part of the teacher. It is believed that the text is complete for students finishing their study of mathematics with a course in Analytic Geometry. The authors have intentionally avoided giving the book the form of a treatise on conic sections. Conic sections naturally appear, but chiefly as illustrative of general analytic methods. Attention is called to the method of treatment. The subject is developed after the Euclidean method of definition and theorem, without, however, adhering to formal presentation. The advantage is obvious, for the student is made sure of the exact nature of each acquisition. Again, each method is summarized in a rule stated in consecutive steps. This is a gain in clearness. Many illustrative examples are worked out in the text. Emphasis has everywhere been put upon the analytic side, that is, the student is taught to start from the equation. He is shown how to work with the figure as a guide, but is warned not to use it in any other way. Chapter III may be referred to in this connection.
