The 21st century has brought new challenges and opportunities for higher education. In the wake of the transition from elitist to mass education, universities worldwide are under pressure to enhance access and equity, on the one hand, and to maintain high standards of quality and excellence, on the other. Papua New Guinea is a developing but an emerging economy in the South Pacific strenuously working to improvise its higher education in accordance with global changes. This paper analyse the effect of globalisation on education and also discusses about the impact of globalisation on higher education, regulations, culture etc. This paper presents an overview of globalisation and higher education. It also explores the Papua New Guinean higher education and its challenges. This paper also highlights the significant impacts that globalization has brought to higher education, and suggest why higher education institutions in PNG should make structural changes in response to the globalization.

Book Challenging Gender Equity in Higher Education

Download or read book Challenging Gender Equity in Higher Education written by Velepat Gutuma Tuaru and published by . This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was originally submitted in fulfillment of the requirements for the decree of Doctor of Philosophy in the School of Education at The University of Queensland. This book examines the barriers to gender equity in higher education in Papua New Guinea (PNG). It highlights the critical role higher education potentially might play in equitable human resource development, pointing towards a sustainable and strategic plan to reduce gender inequities. This study is motivated by imperatives at three levels: personal, national and international. At the personal level, drawing on the advice of feminist thought which recognises that the personal is political, several women's stories set a frame that locates the candidate as a participant and a person interested in pursuing equity in higher education in PNG. The literature review provides the national and international contexts that frame this dissertation within these equity imperatives.

Book The University of Papua New Guinea

Download or read book The University of Papua New Guinea written by Vincent Lynn Meek and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A case study of the first 10 years of the University of Papua New Guinea is presented, with attention focused on the function, structure, and character of a new university in a newly independent nation. The analysis is based on the three issues of adaptation, conflict, and change, and the case study is designed to test how well past social theories fit the reality of a new university in a Melanesian environment, which is characterized by oral transmission of culture, an agricultural economy (until recently), and its history as a colony. The establishment of the University, difficulties with the Australian Department of Territories, early university leaders, and various kinds of struggles are described. Additional considerations include: the contribution of staff to the educational and political life of the colony and new nation, problems facing new students, social problems arising from bringing together sometimes antagonistic people, and the special problems of the small minority of women on campus. Finally, the complex organization of the university and the external environment are examined, including the challenge of reconciling the problems of local relevance with the demands of international standards of scholarship. The methodological and theoretical frameworks for the analysis are also discussed. (SW)

Book Higher Education in the Asia Pacific

Download or read book Higher Education in the Asia Pacific written by Simon Marginson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-08-21 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This survey provides unprecedented scope and detail of analysis on higher education in the Asia-Pacific region. In this era of global integration, convergence and comparison, the balance of power in worldwide higher education is shifting. In less than two decades the Asia-Pacific region has come to possess the largest and fastest growing higher education sector on Earth. The countries of East and Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific together enrol 50 million tertiary students, compared to 14 million in 1991, and will soon conduct a third of all research and development. In China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Korea and Singapore, ‘world-class’ universities are emerging at breakneck pace, fostered by modernizing governments that see knowledge and skills as key to a future shaped equally by East and West, and supported by families deeply committed to education. But not all Asia-Pacific countries are on this path, not all reforms are effective, and there are marked differences between nations in levels of resources, educational participation, research, state controls and academic freedom. Higher Education in the Asia-Pacific: Strategic responses to globalization provides an authoritative survey of tertiary education in this diverse and dynamic region. Its 23 chapters, written by authors from a dozen different countries, focus successively on the Asia-Pacific as a whole, the strategies of individual universities, and national policies and strategies in response to the global challenge.
