Book Oxidation of Tungsten

Download or read book Oxidation of Tungsten written by Vincent David Barth and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report presents a detailed review of available information on the oxidation of W and its alloys. W is relatively inert below 700 C. As the temperature is increased above this level, however, oxidation becomes progressively more rapid, reaching catastrophic rates at temperatures around 1200 C and above. Various theories for the mechanism and rates of W oxidation at different temperatures are reviewed, and the effect of pressure and water vapor on the stability of W oxides is discussed in detail. The elevatedtemperature reactions of W with other materials, such as refractory oxides, and with gases other than oxygen also are covered. Information on the protection of W by alloying and coating is included. (Author).

Book Oxidation Resistant High Temperature Protective Coatings for Tungsten

Download or read book Oxidation Resistant High Temperature Protective Coatings for Tungsten written by H. J. Nolting and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three coating systems were developed that protected 60 mil tungsten sheet from oxidation in air at elevated temperatures. These composites, applied by the vacuum pack process, were; silicon-tungsten; titanium zirconium silicon tungsten, and; titanium zirconium-boron silicon-tungsten. A laboratory scale process for application of each coating to tungsten sheet was developed and optimized. Oxidation characteristics of the coated systems in air under various static and cyclic conditions were determined from 1600° to 3650° F with several hours protection being achieved under cyclic conditions at 3550° F. Tensile tests were conducted on two of the three systems at regular temperature increments from room temperature to 3300° F under various environmental conditions. Stress oxidation, thermal shock, and hot gas erosion tests were also con ducted on the diffraction patterns were determined on the silicon-tungsten and titanium zirconium silicon-tungsten composites in the coated and exposed conditions. Book Experimental Study of Factors Controlling the Effectiveness of High temperature Protective Coatings for Tungsten

Download or read book Experimental Study of Factors Controlling the Effectiveness of High temperature Protective Coatings for Tungsten written by Jack Brett and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The restrictions imposed by the processes of diffusion, evaporation, and coating substrate reactions on the choice of potential protective coating materials for tungsten were studied analytically and experimentally. The diffusive restriction is the most limiting and eliminates many refractory oxides with otherwise satisfactory attributes. The diffusive properties of rare earth sesquioxides and complex refractory oxides were explored by means of oxidation experiments and a layer growth experiment respectively. Mass spectrometric studies of the vaporization of refractory complex oxides were carried out to determine the applicability of the Wagner-Hauffe method of predicting vaporization rates. Provided certain thermodynamic approximations are valid and the vapor species over the complex oxide are the same as those over the pure component oxides, the predictions yield order of magnitude accuracy. A survey and exploration of reactions of possible coating materials with tungsten was performed emphasizing promising materials from the diffusion studies. (Author).

Book Coatings for High Temperature Structural Materials

Download or read book Coatings for High Temperature Structural Materials written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-05-13 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the state of the art of coatings materials and processes for gas-turbine blades and vanes, determines potential applications of coatings in high-temperature environments, identifies needs for improved coatings in terms of performance enhancements, design considerations, and fabrication processes, assesses durability of advanced coating systems in expected service environments, and discusses the required inspection, repair, and maintenance methods. The promising areas for research and development of materials and processes for improved coating systems and the approaches to increased coating standardization are identified, with an emphasis on materials and processes with the potential for improved performance, quality, reproducibility, or manufacturing cost reduction.

Book High Temperature Coatings

Download or read book High Temperature Coatings written by Sudhangshu Bose and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Coatings, Second Edition, demonstrates how to counteract the thermal effects of rapid corrosion and degradation of exposed materials and equipment that can occur under high operating temperatures. This is the first true practical guide on the use of thermally protective coatings for high-temperature applications, including the latest developments in materials used for protective coatings. It covers the make-up and behavior of such materials under thermal stress and the methods used for applying them to specific types of substrates, as well as invaluable advice on inspection and repair of existing thermal coatings. With his long experience in the aerospace gas turbine industry, the author has compiled the very latest in coating materials and coating technologies, as well as hard-to-find guidance on maintaining and repairing thermal coatings, including appropriate inspection protocols. The book is supplemented with the latest reference information and additional support to help readers find more application- and industry-type coatings specifications and uses. Offers an overview of the underlying fundamental concepts of thermally-protective coatings, including thermodynamics, energy kinetics, crystallography and equilibrium phases Covers essential chemistry and physics of underlying substrates, including steels, nickel-iron alloys, nickel-cobalt alloys and titanium alloys Provides detailed guidance on a wide variety of coating types, including those used against high temperature corrosion and oxidative degradation and thermal barrier coatings

Book Experimental Study of Factors Controlling the Effectiveness of High temperature Protective Coatings for Tungsten

Download or read book Experimental Study of Factors Controlling the Effectiveness of High temperature Protective Coatings for Tungsten written by C. D. Dickinson and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oxidation at elevated temperatures of Zr-Th, Zr-Y, Hf-Y, Hf-W, Hf-W-Re, Al-Cr-Sn, and Al-LaSn alloys, as well as ZrN, HfN and ZrN-ThN combinations was studied in order to clarify specific aspects of the problem of protecting W against oxidation at high temperatures. Experimental results showed that there was much less tendency for ZrO2, ThO2 and HfO2 scales to crack during growth at high than at low temperatures. Multiphased scales were more resistanct to spalling than single-phased scales, and protective oxides were grown many alloys. However, even in sound and coherent scales composed of these oxides, O diffused so rapidly that it is doubtful that they could form the basis of a protective system at 2000 C. (Author).
