Book High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means Classic Reprint

Download or read book High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means Classic Reprint written by Maurice Leroy Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means The accurate measurement of high temperatures has come to be a very essential feature of many industrial pro cesses. The pyrometer makes it possible to reproduce with precision any temperature that has been found to yield the best results in Operations requiring careful heat treatment. In the making of tinted glass, for example, the preper regu lation of the temperature of the furnace is necessary to pre vent burning out the color. Instead of depending upon the workman to judge of the condition of the material with his eye, the manufacturer gives instructions to maintain the heat at a certain temperature, knowing then that the output will be of a certain uniform grade. In this manner the variable human element is eliminated and waste prevented. The temper ing of tools, the burning of ceramic products, the Operation of gas producers, the manufacture of iron and steel and the annealing of castings are a few examples of processes that may be carried on to better advantage with the aid of refined methods of measuring high temperatures. The recording pyro meter is rapidly coming into use as an efficient means of eu pervising processes requiring heat treatment. Book Pyrometry

Download or read book Pyrometry written by Chas R. Darling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pyrometry: A Practical Treatise on the Measurement of High Temperatures The next step in advance was the introduction of the expansion pyrometer by John Daniel] in 1822. The elongation Of a platinum rod, encased in plum bago, was made to operate a magnifying device, which moved a pointer over a scale divided so as to read temperatures directly. Although inaccurate as com pared with modern instruments; this pyrometer was the first to give a continuous reading, and required no personal attention. The expansion pyrometer - with different expanding substances - is still used to. A limited extent. The year 1822 was also marked by Seebeck's discovery of thermo-electricity. The generation Of a current of electricity by a heated junction Of two metals, increasing with the temperature, appeared to afford a simple and satisfactory basis for a pyrometer, and Becquerel constructed an instrument on these lines in 1826. Pouillet and others also endeavoured to measure temperatures by the thermo-electric method, but partly owing to the use of unsuitable junctions, and partly to the lack of reliable galvanometers, these workers failed to Obtain concordant results. The method was for all practical purposes abandoned until 1886, when its revival in reliable form led to the enormous extension Of the use of pyrometers witnessed during recent years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High-Temperature Measurements The measurement Of high temperatures was considered for a long time to be a very difficult operation and Of a very uncertain precision. There were cited with admira tion a half-dozen determinations seeming to merit some confidence. During the last few years the question has made considerable progress, and we possess to-day several sufficiently precise pyrometers whose usage is rapidly spreading among scientific and industrial laboratories. Before describing them, perhaps it will not be useless to indicate the services that they may render to science and to industry, by giving a brief summary Of similar services that they have already rendered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Measurement of High Temperatures The enormous differences above mentioned in the estimations of high temperatures are much more the result of the diversity of the scales than due to the errors Of the measurements them selves. Thus the experiments on solar radiation which have led to values varying from I 500° to 1, ooo, ooo° are based on measure ments which do not dier among themselves by more than 2 5 per cent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Technical Thermometry: Electrical Resistance Thermometers, Thermo-Electric Thermometers, Fery Radiation and Absorption Pyrometers, Continuous Temperature Recorders, Electrical Resistance Furnaces, Etc Some measure of the expansion that has taken place in the Thermometric Department of our Works can be obtained by comparing the size of the 1904 edition of Technical Thermometry with the present work. Great efforts have been made to keep this book within convenient limits, but nothing smaller would suffice for the mere enumeration of our productions with the briefest and most concise explanatory notes. By means of the F ery Radiation Pyrometer accurate measurements of very high temperatures have now been brought Within the reach of industrial concerns, this Pyrometer having been brought to a great degree of perfection and simplicity. Manufacturers of Porcelain, Glass and Stone-ware need no longer rely upon the old crude and inaccurate methods. The value of the radiation method has been enhanced by the production of a simple and reliable method of recording the measurements. In the department of Resistance Thermometry, interchangeability between thermometers has greatly increased the convenience of the instruments, and reduced the adjustments needed. Book Laboratory Notes on Heat Measurements Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Notes on Heat Measurements Classic Reprint written by Charles L. Norton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Notes on Heat Measurements The Le Chatelier thermo-electric pyrometer is based upon the increasing electromotive force which exists at a junction of two metals as the temperature rises. If we have a pair of dissimilar metallic wires, their junction becomes the seat of an electromotive force, and if they be joined at both ends, a current will flow through them as the result of the difference between the electromotive forces. At the two ends of the wires. In general, this current is dependent upon the difference in temperature, though not directly proportional to it. In order to use this phenomena as a basis for a pyrometer, since there is no known relation existing directly between temperature and electromotive force in such a cir cuit, we must expose the 'junction to known temperatures and note the current flowing, and in this way calibrate. It is usually customary to observe, not the electromotive force, but the current, keeping the total resistance of the circuit constant in order that this may be allowable. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Pyrometry: The Theory, Calibration, and Use of Instruments for the Measurement of High Temperatures The day is already past when foundrymen and steel workers de pend upon the eye to judge the temperatures of their product in the various stages of its heat treatment, when makers of ceramic products depend upon the indication of fusible cones, and when operators of cold storage plants are content to observe numerous thermometers scattered throughout their establishments. The requirements of modern industrial processes and the severe com petition of commercial enterprises now require not only more precise knowledge of temperatures, but in many cases also re quire a continuous automatic record of the temperature state extending over an interval of time. Several years ago, anticipating the need by technical students of a Course in High Temperature Measurements, the work of testing the various methods and apparatus was begun. After three years devoted to this survey, a course was organized and offered. It was received with such favor that it was made a required subject in the plan of study for students of chemical engineering at Purdue University. Each year since then, a new edition of Notes, in mimeographed form, has been put into the hands of the students. It has now been thought proper to put into more readable and permanent form the results of this experience. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Establishment of the Thermodynamic Scale of Temperature by Means of the Constant-Pressure Thermometer The resulting value depends somewhat on the magnitude of the constant pressure and on the nature of the gas used, so that there are various constant-pressure scales. If the thermometric gases employed be always far from condensa tion so that they follow Boyle's law approximately, all these scales are nearly identical; the numerical value assigned to any given temperature is nearly the same, no matter which scale is used. The adoption of any particular scale is arbitrary and, except in work of the highest precision, one is as good as another.
