Book excerpt: Closed loop operation of a single, high temperature magnetic radial bearing to 30,000 RPM (2.25 million DN) and 540 C (1000 F) is discussed. Also, high temperature, fault tolerant operation for the three axis system is examined. A novel, hydrostatic backup bearing system was employed to attain high speed, high temperature, lubrication free support of the entire rotor system. The hydrostatic bearings were made of a high lubricity material and acted as journal-type backup bearings. New, high temperature displacement sensors were successfully employed to monitor shaft position throughout the entire temperature range and are described in this paper. Control of the system was accomplished through a stand alone, high speed computer controller and it was used to run both the fault-tolerant PID and active vibration control algorithms. Book excerpt: Motors, magnetic bearings, and other electromagnetic actuators that can operate at 1000 degrees F (540 degrees C) hold great promise for providing increased efficiency in machinery for many applications ranging from pebble-bed nuclear reactors and chemical processing to aircraft and unmanned aerial combat vehicle (UCAV) propulsion systems. This report discusses in detail the design and fabrication of a high-temperature, heteropolar, radial magnetic bearing that was operated at 1000 degrees F (540 degrees C). The development of high-temperature wire and a coil fabrication process are two significant technical barriers overcome by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL), the NASA Glenn Research Center, and the Texas A & M University (TAMU) team. This is ARL/NASA/TAMU's third-generation, high-temperature magnetic bearing. The motivation for this research came from the pursuit of a more electric gas turbine engine and a high-temperature, large-diameter, 4-million-DN (diam in millimeters times rotor speed in revolutions per minute) rotor support system. Book excerpt: Open loop, experimental force and power measurements of a three-axis, radial, heteropolar magnetic bearing at room temperature for rotor speeds up to 20,000 RPM are presented in this paper. The bearing, NASA Glenn Research Center's and Texas A & M's third generation high temperature magnetic bearing, was designed to operate in a 1000 deg. F (540 deg. C) environment and was primarily optimized for maximum load capacity. The experimentally measured force produced by one C-core of this bearing was 630 lb. (2.8 kN) at 16 A, while a load of 650 lbs (2.89 kN) was predicted at 16 A using 1D circuit analysis. The maximum predicted radial load for one of the three axes is 1,440 lbs (6.41 kN) at room temperature. The maximum measured load of an axis was 1050 lbs. (4.73 kN). Results of test under rotating conditions showed that rotor speed has a negligible effect on the bearing's load capacity. A single C-core required approximately 70 W of power to generate 300 lb (1.34 kN) of magnetic force. The room temperature data presented was measured after three thermal cycles up to 1000 deg. F (540 deg. C), totaling six hours at elevated temperatures.

The experimentally measured force produced by a single C-core using 22A was 600 pounds (2.67 kN) at room temperature and 380 pounds (1.69 kN) at 1000 degrees F (538 degrees C). These values were compared with force predictions based on a 1D magnetic circuit analysis and a thermal analysis of gap growth as a function of temperature. Tests under rotating conditions showed that rotor speed has a negligible effect on the bearing's load capacity. One C-core required approximately 340 watts of power to generate 190 pounds (8.45 kN) of magnetic force at 1000 degrees F (538 degrees C). However, the magnetic air gap was much larger than at room temperature. The data presented is after the bearing had already operated 6 thermal cycles and 11 total (not consecutive) hours at 1000 degrees F (538 degrees C). (23 figures, 9 refs.).

Book excerpt: Air foil bearings (AFBs) are introduced as promising bearings for oil-free turbomachinery applications. Air foil bearing (AFB) technology has made substantial advancement during the past decades and found its applications in various small turbo machinery. AFBs provide reliable operation at high speed and high temperature with negligible power loss. However, rotordynamic instability, friction and drag during the start/stop, and thermal management are still challenges for further application of the technology. Hybrid Air Foil Bearing (HAFB) technology utilizes the radial injection of externally pressurized air into the traditional hydrodynamic AFB's film thickness through orifices attached to the top foil. HAFB is one of the technology advancements to the conventional AFB. Previous studies on HAFBs demonstrate the enhancement in the load capacity at low speeds, reduction or elimination of the friction and wear during starts/stops, better heat dissipation capability, and enhancement in rotordynamic stability. This dissertation is dedicated to explore the benefit of the HAFB to enhance the rotordynamic stability by employing a controlled hydrostatic injection. Moreover, this dissertation investigates the effect of circumferential location of radial injection on therotordynamic performance of HAFB. Analytical and experimental evaluations of the rotordynamic performance of a rotor supported by two HAFBs with the controlled hydrostatic injection, which utilizes the injections at particular locations to control eccentricity and attitude angle are presented. To investigate the effect of circumferential location of orifices, parametric studies are conducted using three sets of single-pad HAFBs. The circumferential locations of orificesare different for each set. The presented simulation analyses consist of time-domain orbit simulation and frequency-domain modal analysis. The simulations in both time-domain orbit simulations and frequency-domain modal analyses indicate a substantial improvement of the rotorbearing performance. The simulation results were verified in a high speed test rig(maximum speed of 70,000 rpm). Both simulations and experiments clearly demonstrate the effectiveness of the controlled hydrostatic injection on improving the rotordynamic performance of AFB. Imbalance responses of rotor-HAFB were measured with various orifice locations and the results agree well with predictions. Comparison of the rotordynamic performance of HAFBs with different orifice configurations demonstrate substantial improvement in rotordynamic stability as well as enhancement in the stiffness and damping coefficients of HAFBs by choosing the best circumferential location for radial injection to control rotor eccentricity and attitude angle.
