Washington Dos Santos is a loving wife and mother of five young children who has served as a public urban school teacher and administrator for more than two decades. She has dedicated her life to studies that have served to further both her knowledge base and skillset as it relates to advocacy and public service for underrepresented and minority youth in the public school sector. As a champion for “at risk” youth in schools, Heather has worked tirelessly to remove institutional barriers that serve to detach underrepresented youth from their educational programs; thrusting them into our nation’s juvenile justice system as part of the school-to-prison pipeline. With a specific focus on the study of African American males in our nation’s schools, Heather vows to be a catalyst for change as part of her zealous pursuit of justice and equity in practice for African American males across the country.

Book Examining the Phenomenon of Dropping Out of High School Through the Perspectives and Experiences of the African American Male

Download or read book Examining the Phenomenon of Dropping Out of High School Through the Perspectives and Experiences of the African American Male written by John L. Colbert and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We expect all students to achieve and succeed in school, yet current data shows that 23.6% of African American students in Arkansas drop out of school (Bailey & Dziko, 2008). The African American male high school dropouts are much higher than the number of male dropouts from other ethnic groups. As the researcher reviewed the current data about African American dropouts, it was the impetus behind this study. Although many have discussed and written about African American male dropouts in educational forums, essays, short stories, dissertations, and even movies, few have captured the experiences of the African American males in qualitative research, allowing them to have a voice. The study focused on the African American males' perspectives and their educational experiences during high school and how these experiences influenced their decisions to drop out of high school. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to examine the reasons why African American males decided to drop out of high school. The researcher engaged subjects in an in depth assessment of the issues that influenced their decisions to leave high school. The researcher felt that, in order to glean a true picture of the facts as it relates to the African American dropouts, it was imperative to relate the issues to those who were affected. As we examine this dilemma, it is very important that educators understand how African American students might respond or not respond in the learning environment.

Book African American Male Academic Success

Download or read book African American Male Academic Success written by Lawrence L. Scott and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2011-08 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences and perceptions of 10 selected academically successful African American male leaders. In this study, "academic success" was defined as these African American men who attained a master's or postgraduate degree such as a M.D., Ph.D., or J.D. Even though there is bountiful research on the deficiencies in the lives of African American males, it is still unclear what conditions lead African American men to higher educational attainment. The goal of this study was to also add to the deficient, ever-emerging body of research in the area of African American male educational attainment, while providing viable solutions that speak to the plights of African American males from all educational backgrounds and experiences. Using a basic interpretive qualitative inquiry format, the research questions focused on (a) how professional and familial social capital is related to academic success, (b) the participant's perception of the role of resilience in the pursuit of academic attainment, and (c) how does self-efficacy influence academic success for these African American male participants? This research analyzed recurring themes from these participants, who were solicited because they can provide expert testimony on how an African American male can achieve academically. The inquiry produced three recurring themes: Self-Belief and Identity, Social Network and Support, and Faith, Spirituality, and Inspiration. After a comprehensive qualitative analysis of the themes, the following categories emerged: Resilience Over Faulty Mindsets; Competition; Above Mediocrity; Social Network and Support; Family; Positive Influences, Mentors, and Peers; Opportunities; Faith, Spirituality, and Inspiration; Faith in a Higher Power; and Historical Responsibility. All the participants identified Social Network and Support as a major factor in their academic success. Most participants credited a parent, peer, mentor, or teacher as the most influential person that helped them throughout their educational pursuits.

Book Perceptions of African American Male Dropouts Regarding the Experiences that Impacted Their Personal Aspirations

Download or read book Perceptions of African American Male Dropouts Regarding the Experiences that Impacted Their Personal Aspirations written by Geraldine J. Bryant and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A qualitative research design was used to analyze data shared in interviews by 13 African American male high school dropouts. The data were used to answer questions about the complex nature of specific phenomena involving critical incidents perceived to be responsible for their dropping out of school. A lack of research on this serious topic has puzzled educators and policymakers for more than a generation. This research was an opportunity to explore the personal stories of a group of young African American males that may be seen as an indication of the conditions that have affected our larger society. The researcher interwove the data from the interviews with a review of literature on the factors that impact dropping out of school. The researcher used the grounded theory conceptual framework to examine the information gathered from the participants, who had all experienced an action, interaction, or process that affected their aspirations and caused them to drop out of school. Two distinct themes emerged from the data. The theme of loss had subthemes of economic deprivation and lack of support. The resilience theme had subthemes of aspirations and breaking bad habits. The participants learned from their experiences and were willing to help other African American males succeed. Several participants realized the importance of giving back to the community.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Department of Advanced Studies, Leadership and Policy The problem examined in this study was the phenomena of disproportionate suspension of African American males in urban high schools. In order to evaluate this phenomenon, a cultural lens was used to understand the experiences that led to suspension of African American males at True Urban High School. Research participants recounted (in their own voices) the suspension experience from precipitating event(s) to culmination. Further, the researcher examined the degree to which teachers' level of cultural proficiency played a role in the imposition of suspension on these students. In order to understand the suspension experiences, a qualitative research design was employed. Survey data from seven African American male participants (four of the seven were purposefully selected for individual interview sessions) and two teachers were analyzed in the completion of this research.

Book African American High School Males who Failed a Year of English Class

Download or read book African American High School Males who Failed a Year of English Class written by Alice Marie-Jones Newton and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive body of information about the academic failure rate of Black male students amassed over time, but there is limited research on Black males failing English (ELA) classes and struggling with reading comprehension skills. This phenomenological study aims to examine the lived experiences and to hear from these male African American high school students, themselves, about their struggle with reading comprehension. The study is significant because it provides a voice to the lived experiences of Black males who, because of their inability to pass English classes coupled with low reading comprehension skills have had to overcome untold obstacles to graduate from an alternative high school. Nevertheless, they demonstrated academic resilience and met the graduation requirements for their school. In this research study, several theories (African American Male Theory, Attribution, and Expectancy Value Theory, Theory of School Dropouts, and Critical Race Theory) were used to examine the lived experiences of the young men. These theories rest on the belief that Black males can be resilient and successful with the appropriate educational setting, instructions, and teaching instructor. Phenomenology is the qualitative methodology selected for this study because it focuses on understanding individuals' lived experiences and meanings. Many African American males have been unsuccessful in English classes and struggle with reading comprehension skills and consequently have endured significant hardship in establishing meaningful life experiences... Through the use of Phenomenological research tools, data collected demonstrated that, with appropriate educational settings and support, these young men can succeed in English classes and in life. The data collection for this study will consist of face-to-face semi-structured individual interviews with five Black male students attending an alternative high school along with document analysis. The data analysis collected was guided by the research questions and theoretical framework identified in the study.

Book Understanding how High School African American Males Articulate Their Experiences of Mattering and Marginality at School to Teachers and Administrators

Download or read book Understanding how High School African American Males Articulate Their Experiences of Mattering and Marginality at School to Teachers and Administrators written by Tiffany Gipson and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mattering to others is important in society; therefore, knowing how individuals perceive their mattering is essential. The problem addressed in this study is the gap in research of experiences regarding mattering and marginality of high school African American males. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to examine how African American males perceived their experiences of mattering and marginality in high school to teachers and administrators. A qualitative phenomenological approach and design were used to conduct one-on-one, semi-structured interviews with eight upcoming 11th and 12th graders to gather their experiences. Schlossberg's Theory of Marginality and Mattering and Critical Race Theory were used as guiding frameworks for this study. Four themes and four subthemes emerged, highlighting the ways the participants felt they mattered and felt marginalized: 1) getting acknowledged, with the emergent subthemes of being acknowledged through verbal praise and acknowledged through actions; 2) being shown respect, with the emerging subthemes of teachers valuing needs/opinions and teachers understanding; 3) feeling targeted by/rudeness from teachers; and 4) having an optional presence. This study is essential to educators worldwide and future studies because it will help them understand how to create an environment where African American high school males can feel valued, dependable, and appreciated. Hopefully, the African American male student population will continue to be studied, and other populations will be able to share their experiences of mattering and marginality to inform educators how to make all students feel as though they matter in and out of the classroom.

Book A Case Study of School based Leaders Perspectives of High School Dropouts

Download or read book A Case Study of School based Leaders Perspectives of High School Dropouts written by John J. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: School districts are failing to educate all of America's children. Dropout statistics reveal that almost 7,000 students leave our nation's schools everyday. At this rate 1.2 million students will not graduate on time with their prospective classes. The majority of American male students of African descent are dropping out instead of completing high school. When compared to that of their white peers, the dropout rate of American male students of African descent is significantly higher and the graduation rate much lower. This research examines high school dropouts from the perspectives of school-based leaders in a high school located in a city in a large southern school district. Structured interviews, transcribed with member-checks, were conducted with eight school-based leaders. The data in this qualitative study were used to examine their perspectives of American male students of African descent dropping out of their high school. The researcher maintained a reflective research journal to enhance the data analysis. The study found that the perspectives of the eight school-based leaders were influenced by their past histories with these students; their personal and acquired knowledge of these students, their families, and their communities. They were largely uniformed of the dropout rate and their previous history with these students had an impact on their present level of support to these students.

Book African American Males Perceptions of Factors Affecting Transition from Middle School to High School

Download or read book African American Males Perceptions of Factors Affecting Transition from Middle School to High School written by Anissia Jimmetra Jenkins and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study was to examine structural, academic, and personal factors affecting the transition of African American males to high school by giving voice to the participants. A qualitative dominant explanatory mixed methods design (Creswell, 2005) was used to collect data. In the qualitative phase, a questionnaire was administered to 16 African American male students who had completed the first semester of their freshman year. For the qualitative phase of the study, eight of the 16 participants were chosen to participate in individual and focus group interviews. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyze the quantitative data. Analysis of the questionnaire data informed development of the individual interview protocol; analysis of data from the individual interviews informed development of the focus group interview protocol. Qualitative data were analyzed using Creswell's (2005) content analysis coding procedures. Eight themes related to structural, academic, and personal factors emerged; (a) School Size Is Not A Problem, But ... (physical structure), (b) Hangin' With My Friends In Class: Missing the Interdisciplinary Team Structure (academic structure), (c) Teachers Think We Can't Do the Work (teacher expectations), (d) This Is Harder Than I Thought It Would Be (academic expectations and academic assistance), (e) My Friends Save Me: Camaraderie of the "Brothers" at School (relationships with peers), (f) Teachers: Friend or Foe? (relationships with teachers), (g) You're Not There to Take Up Space: Great Expectations of Parents/Guardians and Community (home and community."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.
