Book The Morphodynamics of the Wadden Sea

Download or read book The Morphodynamics of the Wadden Sea written by Jurgen Ehlers and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wadden Sea area of the North Sea is one which undergoes rapid morphological changes. Under natural conditions, the barrier islands would adjust them¬selves to a rising sea level. However, be¬cause the islands are densely populated and have an important role as holiday resorts, morphological changes are un¬desirable. Coastal engineering counter-measures have been undertaken to pre¬vent beach erosion, shifting of tidal in¬lets, breaching of dune ridges and land¬ward-directed washover. The natural processes and the results of human inter¬ference including the negative conse¬quences of many of the measures are discussed in detail. The author presents the current state of research, together with the results of his own investigations. In addition, a comprehensive description of the geomorphological development and recent problems of the barrier is¬lands from Texel to Fanø is given for the first time. The book includes 40 colour photographs and 393 figures, almost all previously unpublished. Sat¬ellite and radar imagery as well as many aerial photographs are also included. The book is intended for geomorphologists, sedimentologists, environmentalists and all those with a scientific interest in tidal flats and barrier islands.

Book Long term Perspective in Coastal Zone Development

Download or read book Long term Perspective in Coastal Zone Development written by Frank Ahlhorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From February 2004 until December 2007 the ComCoast project (Combined Fu- tions in Coastal Defence Zones) was carried out within the Interreg IIIB framework. The objective of this project was to investigate and to test the options for spatial coastal protection concepts. The mission statement of the project over its entire duration was: A wider approach in coastal thinking. I was glad to be part of this project and would like to thank all my European colleagues for the constructive and cooperative atmosphere. Firstly, I would like to express my thanks to Prof. Dr. Horst Sterr and Prof. Dr. Hans Kunz who assisted me over these years with their thorough guidance and comprehensive expertise and for many in-depth discussions on the focus of this dissertation. Secondly, I would like to thank my colleague Dr. Jur ̈ gen Meyerdirks, who acted as my key scienti c sparring partner over the last two years, and who continuously demonstrated his ability to bring me back to earth. Additionally, I would like to thank my colleague Dr. Thomas Klenke, who gave me the chance to be part of a challenging European project consortium and who supported me with his expertise on the project and the dissertation. Furthermore, I would like to express my special thanks to Gerard McGovern, who thoroughly improved my English.

Book North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment

Download or read book North Sea Region Climate Change Assessment written by Markus Quante and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-31 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers an up-to-date review of our current understanding of climate change in the North Sea and adjacent areas, as well as its impact on ecosystems and socio-economic sectors. It provides a detailed assessment of climate change based on published scientific work compiled by independent international experts from climate-related disciplines such as oceanography, atmospheric sciences, marine and terrestrial ecology, using a regional evaluation and review process similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). It provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of our changing climate, discussing a wide range of topics including past, current and future climate change, and climate-related changes in marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. It also explores the impact of climate change on socio-economic sectors such as fisheries, agriculture, coastal zone management, coastal protection, urban climate, recreation/tourism, offshore activities/energy, and air pollution.

Download or read book Fire In the Wadden Sea written by Sven Gehrmann and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heat wave works its way under the sea surface with increasing speed from south to north. The season "winter" obviously did not take place at all in the southern North Sea at the turn of the year from 2019 to 2020... The temperature measurements of the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency in Germany speak volumes. Actually, there should be alarm sirens going off all day long... A further indication of the climate catastrophe can be found under the sea surface: namely the shift of the fauna of the English Channel to the north, which is now beginning to establish itself on our coasts in the German Bight. This work takes a closer look at several known and lesser known species of invertebrates and fish and places them in the context of climate change. It provides various convincing arguments against all deniers of the climate catastrophe, which is already subtly announced by the faunal change...

Book The Spatial and Temporal Link Between Common Terns Sterna Hirundo and Their Prey Fish in the Wadden Sea

Download or read book The Spatial and Temporal Link Between Common Terns Sterna Hirundo and Their Prey Fish in the Wadden Sea written by Andreas Dänhardt and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of spatial and temporal distribution patterns of fish on the reproduction of Common Terns Sterna hirundo was investigated. Long-term changes in breeding success could be explained by the abundance of North Sea herring Clupeaharengus. Overall prey fish density had a more profound impact on feeding conditions of the terns than the degree of temporal predator-prey-overlap. The vertical distribution patterns of prey fish appeared to reflect their predation risk. They were usually below the terns' maximum diving depth. The terns fed high quality prey to their mates and offspring disproportionately often. Common Tern prey fish abundance varies due to production of offspring beyond the Wadden Sea. On the other hand local conditions in the Wadden Sea determine habitat quality for the fish. Both factors control energy flux to higher trophic levels. engl.
