Book Equations of State for Solids at High Pressures and Temperatures

Download or read book Equations of State for Solids at High Pressures and Temperatures written by V. N. Zharkov and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We started our work on theoretical methods in the phys ics of high pressures (in connec tion with geophysical applications) in 1956, and we immediately encountered many problems. Naturally, we searched the published Iiterature for solutions to these problems but whenever we failed to find a solution or when the solution did not satisfy us, we attempted to solve the problern ourselves. We realized that other investigators working in the physics of high pres sures would probably encounter the same problems and doubts. Therefore, we decided to write this book in order to save our colleagues time and effort. Apart from the descriptions of ex perimental methods, the book deals only with those problems which we encountered in our own work. Allproblems in high-pressure physics have, at present, only approximate solutions, which are very rough. Therefore, it is not surprising that different investigators approach the same problems in different ways. Our approach does not prejudge the issue and we are fully aware that there are other points of view. Our aim was always to solve a glven problern on a physical basis. For example, the concept of the Grüneisenparameter needs further develop ment but it is based on reliable physical ideas. On the other hand, Simon's equation for the melting curve has, in our opinion, no clear physical basis and is purely empirical. Equations of this type are useful in systematic presentation of the experimental material but they are un suitable for any major extrapolation.

Book Fundamentals Of Equations Of State

Download or read book Fundamentals Of Equations Of State written by Shalom Eliezer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-03-05 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The equation of state was originally developed for ideal gases, and proved central to the development of early molecular and atomic physics. Increasingly sophisticated equations of state have been developed to take into account molecular interactions, quantization, relativistic effects, etc.Extreme conditions of matter are encountered both in nature and in the laboratory, for example in the centres of stars, in relativistic collisions of heavy nuclei, in inertial confinement fusion (where a temperature of 109 K and a pressure exceeding a billion atmospheres can be achieved). A sound knowledge of the equation of state is a prerequisite for understanding processes at very high temperatures and pressures, as noted in some recent developments. This book presents a detailed pedagogical account of the equation of state and its applications in several important and fast-growing topics in theoretical physics, chemistry and engineering.

Book High pressure Equations of State

Download or read book High pressure Equations of State written by Shalom Eliezer and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1991 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists have been working during the last three centuries on the unification of the forces in nature. However, the understanding and the unification of all the basic forces of nature does not necessarily explain the behaviour of a large system of strongly coupled particles. For example, phase transitions in general and strongly coupled plasmas in particular are described by the equations of state of matter. In particular, the knowledge of pressure, energy and entropy as a function of temperature, density and chemical context is necessary in order to understand the behaviour and the development of a star or any other complex system in local thermodynamic equilibrium. Equations of State are used in chemistry, astrophysics, geophysics, nuclear physics, high energy physics, plasma physics and shock wave studies. This book aims to bring all these fields together through the Equations of State, thus unifying a major part of physics.

Book Multiparameter Equations of State

Download or read book Multiparameter Equations of State written by Roland Span and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-04-27 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book deals with the most accurate method to describe thermodynamic property data, with empirical multiparameter equations of state. Due to new theoretical approaches, to increasing demands on the accuracy of thermodynamic property data, and to increasing computer power such equations became a valuable tool for every day calculations in scientific and engineering applications, rather than just the basis of printed property charts and tables. The book is dedicated both to users, who apply such formulations either in form of commercially available software or in form of programs written by themselves, and to scientists engaged in the development of empirical equations of state. Starting from a brief history, it covers the fundamentals of this subject as well as the most recent developments in the fields of highly accurate reference equations, of equations for advanced technical applications, and of the description of mixtures with multiparameter equations of state.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a basis for printed property charts and tables, empirical multiparameter equa tions of state have been the most important source of accurate thermodynamic property data for more than 30 years now. However, due to increasing demands on the accuracy of thermodynamic property data in computerised calculations as well as the availability of appropriate software tools, and the ever increasing computer power, such formulations are nowadays becoming a valuable tool for everyday work. This development has substantially increased the number of scientists, engi neers, and students who are working with empirical multiparameter equations of state, and it continues to do so. Nevertheless, common knowledge on this kind of thermodynamic property models and on the ongoing progress in this scientific discipline is still very limited. Multiparameter equations of state do not belong to the topics which are taught intensively in thermodynamic courses in engineering and natural sciences and the books and articles where they are published mainly deal with the thermodynamic properties of certain substances rather than with the theoretical background of the used equations of state. In contrast to this, my concern mainly was to give a survey of the theoretical background of multiparameter equations of state both with regard to their application and their development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on The Nuclear Equatioo of State was held at Peiiiscola Spain from May 22- June 3, 1989. The school was devoted to the advances, theoretical and experimental, made during the past fifteen years in the physics of nuclear matter under extreme conditions, such as high compression and high temperature. Moie than 300 people had applied for participatio- this demonstrates the tremendous interest in the various subjects presented at the school. Indeed, the topic of this school, namely the Nuclear Equatioo of State, • plays the central role in high energy heavy ion collisions; • contains the intriguing possibilities of various phase transitions (gas - vapor, meson condensation, quark - gluon plasma); • plays an important role in the static and dynamical behavior of stars, especially in supernova explosions and in neutron star stability. The investigation on the nuclear equation of state can only be accomplished in the laboratory by compressing and heating up nuclear matter and the only mechanism known to date to achieve this goal is through shock compression and -heating in violent high energy heavy ion collisions. This key mechanism has been proposed and highly disputed in of high energy heavy ion physics, the early 70's. It plays a central role in the whole field and particularly in our discussions during the two weeks at Peiiiscola.

Book Equations of State for Solids in Geophysics and Ceramic Science

Download or read book Equations of State for Solids in Geophysics and Ceramic Science written by Orson Anderson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-12 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by a renowned expert in the field, this book is the most comprehensive treatment available on the applications of equations of state (EoS) in geophysics and materials science, a topic of fundamental importance to those studying the physics and chemistry of the Earth. Part one offers comprehensive treatments of thermal properties associated with EoS, thermodynamic and statistical mechanical backgrounds, and thermoelastic properties. Definitions of the physical properties needed for the EoS are provided as well. Part two discusses the isothermal pressure-volume relationship. The ab initio approach--EoS based upon quantum mechanics fundamentals using numerical methods--is utilized to clearly represent and analyze the measured data. Part three offers an advanced treatment of thermal properties at high temperature, and includes discussions of thermal pressure, shocked solids, and EoS applications to materials science topics such as melting and thermodynamic function. Advanced students, researchers, and professionals in geophysics, ceramics science, solid state physics, and geochemistry will want to read this book.
