  • Author : Derek Phillips
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2012-05-23
  • ISBN : 113641200X
  • Pages : 238 pages

Download or read book Daylighting written by Derek Phillips and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daylighting offers a general theory and introduction to the use of natural light in architecture. The fourth of Derek Phillip's lighting books draws on his experience to illustrate how best to bring natural light into building design. As sustainability becomes a core principal for designers, daylighting comes to the fore as an alternative to artificial, energy consuming, light. Here, Phillips makes a rational argument for considering daylight first, outlining the arguments in favour of a daylight approach, and goes on to show, through a series of beautifully illustrated case studies, how architects have created buildings in which natural light has been shown to play a major strategic role in the development of the design of a building.

Book Stillness and Light

    Book Details:
  • Author : Henry Plummer
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2009-08-11
  • ISBN : 025300778X
  • Pages : 219 pages

Download or read book Stillness and Light written by Henry Plummer and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2009-08-11 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shaker buildings have long been admired for their simplicity of design and sturdy craftsmanship, with form always following function. Over the years, their distinctive physical characteristics have invited as much study as imitation. Their clean, unadorned lines have been said to reflect core Shaker beliefs such as honesty, integrity, purity, and perfection. In this book, Henry Plummer focuses on the use of natural light in Shaker architecture, noting that Shaker builders manipulated light not only for practical reasons of illumination but also to sculpt a deliberately spiritual, visual presence within their space. Stillness and Light celebrates this subtly beautiful aspect of Shaker innovation and construction, captured in more than 100 stunning photographs.

Book Experiencing Architecture second edition

Download or read book Experiencing Architecture second edition written by Steen Eiler Rasmussen and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1964-03-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A classic examination of superb design through the centuries. Widely regarded as a classic in the field, Experiencing Architecture explores the history and promise of good design. Generously illustrated with historical examples of designing excellence—ranging from teacups, riding boots, and golf balls to the villas of Palladio and the fish-feeding pavilion of Beijing's Winter Palace—Rasmussen's accessible guide invites us to appreciate architecture not only as a profession, but as an art that shapes everyday experience. In the past, Rasmussen argues, architecture was not just an individual pursuit, but a community undertaking. Dwellings were built with a natural feeling for place, materials and use, resulting in “a remarkably suitable comeliness.” While we cannot return to a former age, Rasmussen notes, we can still design spaces that are beautiful and useful by seeking to understand architecture as an art form that must be experienced. An understanding of good design comes not only from one's professional experience of architecture as an abstract, individual pursuit, but also from one's shared, everyday experience of architecture in real time—its particular use of light, color, shape, scale, texture, rhythm and sound. Experiencing Architecture reminds us of what good architectural design has accomplished over time, what it can accomplish still, and why it is worth pursuing. Wide-ranging and approachable, it is for anyone who has ever wondered “what instrument the architect plays on.”

Book Device Architecture and Materials for Organic Light Emitting Devices

Download or read book Device Architecture and Materials for Organic Light Emitting Devices written by Sarah Schols and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-05-10 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Device Architecture and Materials for Organic Light-Emitting Devices focuses on the design of new device and material concepts for organic light-emitting devices, thereby targeting high current densities and an improved control of the triplet concentration. A new light-emitting device architecture, the OLED with field-effect electron transport, is demonstrated. This device is a hybrid between a diode and a field-effect transistor. Compared to conventional OLEDs, the metallic cathode is displaced by one to several micrometers from the light-emitting zone, reducing optical absorption losses. The electrons injected by the cathode accumulate at an organic heterojunction and are transported to the light-emission zone by field-effect. High mobilities for charge carriers are achieved in this way, enabling a high current density and a reduced number of charge carriers in the device. Pulsed excitation experiments show that pulses down to 1 μs can be applied to this structure without affecting the light intensity, suggesting that pulsed excitation might be useful to reduce the accumulation of triplets in the device. The combination of all these properties makes the OLED with field-effect electron transport particularly interesting for waveguide devices and future electrically pumped lasers. In addition, triplet-emitter doped organic materials, as well as the use of triplet scavengers in conjugated polymers are investigated.

Book excerpt: High On...German Architects presents thirty-two leading German architectural practices and their signature projects. Whether in the areas of housing, commercial, administrative, and public architecture or in the renovation and revitalisation of existing buildings, all have one thing in common: the architects are concerned with sustainable design and reject short-lived trends. This policy manifests itself in minimalistic architecture as well as in the combination of tradition and modernity. The focus is always on a holistic solution that gives expression to an individual attitude to life. To these ends, the respective needs, passions, dreams, and desires of the clients are brought into unity with the specific location and surrounding environment, as well as the climatic and socio-cultural conditions. AUTHOR: Ralf Daab has been in book publishing for 25 years, with Taschen, Koenemann and teNeues where he developed a new book programme and established a worldwide distribution network. With this experience he started his own label daab and published over 200 books on art, architecture, design, photography and fashion. He is the founder of Cologne Catwalk and Cologne Fashion Days. More recently Ralf Daab launched HIGH ON..., a new imprint for innovative art and design books. In Spring 2017 he had his first exhibition of his own photographic artwork at The New Yorker Hotel in Cologne. 450 colour images
