Book High Gravity g Combustion

Download or read book High Gravity g Combustion written by and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultra-short combustors to minimize residence time, with special flame-holding mechanisms to cope with increased through-velocities are likely in the future. The Ultra-Compact Combustor (UCC), a novel design based on trapped-vortex combustor (TVC) work that uses high swirl in a circumferential cavity to enhance reaction rates via high cavity g-loading on the order of 3000 g's. Increase in reaction rates translates to a reduced combustor volume. Three combustor geometric features were varied during experiments (1) high-g cavity flame-holding method, (2) high-g cavity to main airflow transport method, and (3) fuel injection method. Results have shown promise for advanced engine applications. Lean blowout fuel-air ratio limits at 25-50% the value of current systems were demonstrated. Combustion efficiency was measured over a wide range of UCC operating conditions. This data begins to build the design space required for future engine designs that may use these novel, compact, high-g combustion systems.

Book Concurrent Research on High Gravity g Combustion and Enabling Materials

Download or read book Concurrent Research on High Gravity g Combustion and Enabling Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gas turbine engine has been proposed that uses a near constant temperature (NCT) cycle and Inter-Turbine Burner (ITB) to provide large amounts of power extraction from the low-pressure turbine. This level of energy is achieved with a modest temperature rise across the ITB. The additional energy can be used to power a large fan for an ultra-high bypass ratio transport aircraft, or to drive an alternator for large amounts of electrical power extraction. Conventional gas turbine engines cannot drive ultra-large diameter fans without the use of excessive turbine temperatures, and cannot meet high power extraction demands without a loss of engine thrust. Reducing the size of the main combustor and ITB is essential to reducing or maintaining overall engine weight and size for the NCT cycle. Concepts for an ultra-compact combustor (UCC) are being explored experimentally. The basic combustor design involves flame-holding in a cavity within which the flow is strongly swirled. Experimental results at atmospheric pressure indicate that the combustion system flame holding zone operated at 95 - 99 percent combustion efficiency over a wide range of operating conditions. Flame lengths were extremely short, at about 50 percent those of conventional systems.

Book Concurrent Research on High Gravity g Combustion with Enabling Materials

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gas turbine combustor concept that uses high g-loading in the circumferential cavity is being tested at AFRL to provide the foundation for development of a low-emissions, ultra-compact, high performance combustion system for future military and commercial aircraft. This work comprises experimental testing and modeling and simulation of different high g-loaded combustion cavities. Initial tests indicate that, by using highly swirling flows, the combustor performance can be enhanced in the form of improved combustor efficiencies at reduced combustor length. Understanding the impact of high g-loading on the pollutant emissions, operability limits, and combustor durability are three major areas where the AFOSR program will progress the scientific understanding of the physical processes involved in this novel combustion system.

Book Materials Processing in High Gravity

Download or read book Materials Processing in High Gravity written by Liya L. Regel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are two motives for studying materials processing in centrifuges. First, such research improves our understanding of the influence of acceleration and convection on materials processing. Second, there are commercial opportunities for production of unique and improved materials that cannot be prepared under normal earth conditions or in space. Through a combination of experiments and theory, we are gaining an understanding of centrifugation on phenomena of importance to materials processing. We find that it is necessary to consider not only acceleration, but also the Corio lis effect and the variation of acceleration with position. As one consequence, the vigor of buoyancy-driven convection is sometimes increased by centrifugation and sometimes decreased. Similarly, the tendency of the convection to become unstable or oscillatory may either be increased or decreased by centrifugation. On the other hand, the observed effects of centrifugation on product quality have largely gone unexplained. This volume constitutes the proceedings of The Second International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity, hosted by Clarkson University in June of 1993. The concept for a workshop on materials processing in centrifuges was born at a series of informal meetings held in Paris in 1990. The First International Workshop on Materials Processing at High Gravity was held in May of 1991 in Dubna, USSR, on the banks of the Volga River. The proceedings of this workshop was published in 1992 as a special issue of the Journal of Crystal Growth.

Book Introduction to Physics and Chemistry of Combustion

Download or read book Introduction to Physics and Chemistry of Combustion written by Michael A. Liberman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-03-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the material covered in this book deals with the fundamentals of chemistry and physics of key processes and fundamental mechanisms for various combustion and combustion related phenomena in gaseous combustible mixture. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of burning processes and mechanisms of reaction wave propagation. The combustion of a gas mixture (flame, explosion, detonation) is necessarily accompanied by motion of the gas. The process of combustion is therefore not only a chemical phenomenon but also one of gas dynamics. The material selection focuses on the gas phase and with premixed gas combustion. Premixed gas combustion is of practical importance in engines, modern gas turbine and explosions, where the fuel and air are essentially premixed, and combustion occurs by the propagation of a front separating unburned mixture from fully burned mixture. Since premixed combustion is the most fundamental and potential for practical applications, the emphasis in the present work is be placed on regimes of premixed combustion. This text is intended for graduate students of different specialties, including physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering, computer science, mathematics and astrophysics.

Book excerpt: Extensively using experimental and numerical illustrations, CombustionPhenomena: Selected Mechanisms of Flame Formation, Propagation, and Extinction provides a comprehensive survey of the fundamental processes of flame formation, propagation, and extinction. Taking you through the stages of combustion, leading experts visually display, mathematically explain, and clearly theorize on important physical topics of combustion. After a historical introduction to the field, they discuss combustion chemistry, flammability limits, and spark ignition. They also study counterflow twin-flame configuration, flame in a vortex core, the propagation characteristics of edge flames, instabilities, and tulip flames. In addition, the book describes flame extinction in narrow channels, global quenching of premixed flames by turbulence, counterflow premixed flame extinction limits, the interaction of flames with fluids in rotating vessels, and turbulent flames. The final chapter explores diffusion flames as well as combustion in spark- and compression-ignition engines. It also examines the transition from deflagration to detonation, along with the detonation wave structure. With downloadable resources of images that beautifully illustrate a range of combustion phenomena, this book facilitates a practical understanding of the processes occurring in the conception, spread, and extinguishment of a flame. It will help you on your way to finding solutions to real issues encountered in transportation, power generation, industrial processes, chemical engineering, and fire and explosion hazards.
