Cardiovascular disorders (CVD, e.g. coronary heart diseases, hypertension, rheumatic heart disease, angina, heart failure and deep vein thrombosis) show significantly increasing rates in South Asian countries like Pakistan and have become a major health problem. Nevertheless, the data on any aspect of cardiovascular problems still is scanty. The serum profiles of different minerals (copper, magnesium, zinc, selenium) and lipids are analyzed in detail. The presented data will thus lead to a better understanding of the problem and help to provide possible solutions, which can be achieved, e.g. through ameliorated minerals profiles in the daily diet. These results can help develop better dietary management strategies in the prevention and treatment of CVD.

Cardiovascular morbidity and mortality also remain high despite successful anti-hypertensive and lipid lowering drug therapies which help to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality by about 30% in both secondary and tertiary prevention settings. This can partly be explained by the increasing life expectancy and growing p- portionofelderly people,especiallyinEuropeandNorthAmerica. Inaddition, the World Health Organization makes the alarming prediction that probably in response to the spreading of western dietary behavior and lack of exercise resulting in an increasing prevalence of diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypert- sion, cardiovascular diseases rather than infectious diseases will become the most frequent cause of death worldwide. It is transported to and from the cells by special carriers called lipoproteins. This book focuses on the two main types of lipoproteins- low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL is the major cholesterol carrier in the blood. If too much LDL cholesterol circulates in the blood, it can cause atherosclerosis and/or clotting. HDL is known as "good cholesterol" because a high HDL level seems to protect against a heart attack. About one-third to one-fourth of blood cholesterol is carried by HDL. This book focuses on ways to reduce LDL-cholesterol levels, and therefore reduce the risk of serious health problems. Other factors that affect cholesterol levels, such as cigarette smoking and diabetes, are looked at as well. Different treatments, such as pharmacological therapies for high or low cholesterol levels are also examined.
