Download or read book High Energy and Short Pulse Lasers written by Richard Viskup and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.

Book High Average Power High Energy Short Pulse Fiber Laser System

Download or read book High Average Power High Energy Short Pulse Fiber Laser System written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recently continuous wave fiber laser systems with output powers in excess of 500W with good beam quality have been demonstrated [1]. High energy, ultrafast, chirped pulsed fiber laser systems have achieved record output energies of 1mJ [2]. However, these high-energy systems have not been scaled beyond a few watts of average output power. Fiber laser systems are attractive for many applications because they offer the promise of high efficiency, compact, robust systems that are turn key. Applications such as cutting, drilling and materials processing, front end systems for high energy pulsed lasers (such as petawatts) and laser based sources of high spatial coherence, high flux x-rays all require high energy short pulses and two of the three of these applications also require high average power. The challenge in creating a high energy chirped pulse fiber laser system is to find a way to scale the output energy while avoiding nonlinear effects and maintaining good beam quality in the amplifier fiber. To this end, our 3-year LDRD program sought to demonstrate a high energy, high average power fiber laser system. This work included exploring designs of large mode area optical fiber amplifiers for high energy systems as well as understanding the issues associated chirped pulse amplification in optical fiber amplifier systems.

Book Fiber Laser Front Ends for High Energy Short Pulse Lasers

Download or read book Fiber Laser Front Ends for High Energy Short Pulse Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are developing an all fiber laser system optimized for providing input pulses for short pulse (1-10ps), high energy ((almost equal to)1kJ) glass laser systems. Fiber lasers are ideal solutions for these systems as they are highly reliable and once constructed they can be operated with ease. Furthermore, they offer an additional benefit of significantly reduced footprint. In most labs containing equivalent bulk laser systems, the system occupies two 4'x8' tables and would consist of 10's if not a 100 of optics which would need to be individually aligned and maintained. The design requirements for this application are very different those commonly seen in fiber lasers. High energy lasers often have low repetition rates (as low as one pulse every few hours) and thus high average power and efficiency are of little practical value. What is of high value is pulse energy, high signal to noise ratio (expressed as pre-pulse contrast), good beam quality, consistent output parameters and timing. Our system focuses on maximizing these parameters sometimes at the expense of efficient operation or average power. Our prototype system consists of a mode-locked fiber laser, a compressed pulse fiber amplifier, a ''pulse cleaner'', a chirped fiber Bragg grating, pulse selectors, a transport fiber system and a large flattened mode fiber amplifier. In our talk we will review the system in detail and present theoretical and experimental studies of critical components. We will also present experimental results from the integrated system.

Book Development of High Power Lasers for Materials Interactions

Download or read book Development of High Power Lasers for Materials Interactions written by L. A. Hackel and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has a long history of developing high power lasers for use in basic science and applications. The Laser Science and Technology Program (LS & T) at LLNL supports advanced lasers and optics development both for the National Ignition Facility (NIF) as well as for high power lasers and optics technology for a broader range of government, military and industrial applications. The NIF laser is currently under construction with the first of the 192 beamlines being activated. When finished NIF will have an output energy of 2 MJ at 351 nm. This system will be used for studies of high energy density physics, equation of state and inertial confinement fusion. It is now generally acknowledged that the future of laser missile defense lies with solid state lasers. The leading laser technology for theater missile defense is under development within the LS & T and funded by the US Army SMDC. This high average power technology is based on a solid state laser operated in a heat capacity mode. In the concept the heat producing lasing cycle is separated in time from the cooling cycle thus reducing thermal gradients and allowing significantly greater average output power. Under the current program, an LLNL developed laser has achieved a record setting 13 kW of average power in 20 second duration bursts. We have also performed target lethality experiments showing a previously unrecognized advantage of a pulsed laser format. The LLNL work is now focused on achieving improved output beam quality and in developing a 100 kW output with diode pumping of a large aperture crystal gain medium on a compact mobile platform. The Short Pulse Laser Group of LS & T has been developing high power short pulse laser systems for a number of applications. Of great importance is petawatt (10{sup 12} Watt) and greater power output to support experiments on the NIF. We are developing a system of 5 M class output and 5 to 10 ps pulse duration for generating intense radiation for radiography, particle beam generation and eventually for a new class of fusion experiments call fast ignition. We have also built a record setting 50 watts of average output from a picosecond class laser and are using this technology for materials processing such as fine hole drilling and safe cutting of munitions. The laser science and technology program has developed and deployed a laser guide star on the Lick telescope on Mt. Hamilton and most recently on the Keck telescope in Hawaii. Our current development work in this area is focused on developing a much more compact all solid state diode pumped laser fiber system. Finally in a program originally initiated by DARPA we have developed a phase conjugated Nd:glass laser system with record setting performance and successfully deployed it for Navy and Air Force satellite imaging applications and have more recently successfully transferred it to industry for use in an emerging technology called laser peening. This laser technology is capable of 25 J to 100 J per pulse, 10 ns to 1000 ns pulse duration, 5 Hz laser. The technology has been industrially deployed and is proving to be highly effective in generating high intensity shocks that induce compressive residual stress into metal components. The compressive stress retards fatigue and stress corrosion cracking and is proving to extend the lifetime of high value components by factors of ten. This processing adds lifetime, enhances safety and can improve performance of aircraft systems. Laser peening is now being evaluated to reduce the weight of aircraft and may play a major role in the future combat system and its air transport by enabling lighter craft, longer range and greater payload. The laser peening technology is also being moved forward in NRC license application as the means to eliminate stress corrosion cracking for Yucca Mountain nuclear waste disposal canisters as well as a broad range of other applications.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two novel laser systems for ultrafast applications have been designed and built. For the seeding of a high energy cryogenically cooled Yb:YLF laser, a novel 1018 nm fiber laser system is demonstrated. It produces >35 nJ pulse energy and 5 nm spectral bandwidth. A double-cladd amplifier and an appropriate filter to optimize the system for the amplifier seeding application were employed. This is the highest pulse energy with narrow spectrum at 1018 nm. For a photonic analog-to-digital conversion system operating at 1250 nm, a fiber laser system generating 4 W of femtosecond Cherenkov radiation at that wavelength was built. The characteristics of the Cherenkov radiation were well studied.

Book High Energy YB Doped Femtosecond Fiber Lasers

Download or read book High Energy YB Doped Femtosecond Fiber Lasers written by Hussein Kotb and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of the thesis is to understand the parameters that contribute in limiting the pulse energy and spectral bandwidth of the mode-locked femtosecond fiber lasers. I have focused on studying the impact of the parameters of the saturable absorber and the bandwidth of the lumped spectral filter on the temporal and spectral profiles of the pulse. Therefore, I developed two models that can help us to optimize the pulse characteristics such as the pulse energy, spectral bandwidth and de-chirped pulse width. I also introduce two techniques that result in increasing the pulse peak power and spectral bandwidth. The nonlinear transmission coefficient of the saturable absorber is one of the main limitations to achieving high-energy pulses. Throughout my research, I have used two types of saturable absorbers. The first is a lumped semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) and the second is based on the nonlinear polarization rotation (NPR) that is considered an artificial saturable absorber with distributed effect. The first model introduced in this thesis is an analytical model, which provides closed form relations for the pulse characteristics of all-normal dispersion fiber laser. It shows how the spectral bandwidth of the lumped filter inserted inside the cavity affects the pulse characteristics. Also, it illustrates the influence of the saturable absorber parameters on the pulse characteristics. I show that increasing the small signal saturable absorber loss and decreasing the saturation power leads to the increase in pulse energy and spectral bandwidth. Numerical simulation and experimental results are in agreement with the results of the analytical models. The second model, which is called the semi-vector model, is applicable to all-normal dispersion mode-locked fiber laser with high output coupling ratio. Nonlinear polarization rotation is employed for mode-locking. The model shows the relationship between the location of the overdriving point of the saturable absorber and the output pulse energy. The results of this model are in agreement with those of the full-vector model, but with a much reduced simulation time. In addition, the experimental results show the accuracy of the proposed model. In this thesis, I mitigate the peak power limitation, caused by the accumulated nonlinear phase shift, by replacing the short high-doped Yb3+ fiber with a long low-doped one. This results in an increase of the peak power by a factor that depends on the ratio between the gain coefficient of the high- and low-doped Yb3+ fiber. The length of the nonlinear section is kept unchanged by reducing the length of the single mode fiber after the long low-doped Yb3+ fiber. Numerical simulation and experimental results validate the idea. The location of narrow bandwidth lumped spectral filter, in an active Similariton laser, has proved to have a distinct effect on the pulse energy, spectral bandwidth and de-chirped pulse width and peak power. The proximity of the spectral filter to the input of the Yb3+-doped fiber leads to increasing the pulse spectral bandwidth and peak power of the de-chirped pulse as well as shortening the de-chirped pulse, but at the expense of reducing the pulse energy.
