Book Hiding In Plain Sight in Hendersonville

Download or read book Hiding In Plain Sight in Hendersonville written by Arts Council of Henderson County and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the Hendersonville street grid. It is essentially unchanged since it was laid out in 1847. The town started as the judicial center for Henderson County that was cleaved from Buncombe County in 1838. To the extent that it grew at all in its early days it was as a stopping point on the Buncombe Turnpike that had been carved through the Blue Ridge Mountains from South Carolina to Tennessee in 1827. Main Street where we are standing was part of the Turnpike. The railroad arrived in 1879 and Hendersonville morphed into an agricultural market. Still, by the year 1900 this was only a town of some 1,000 people. What you would have seen looking down Main Street were wooden houses, wooden inns, some commercial brick buildings and plenty of trees and open space. Hendersonville was just beginning to develop as a middle class resort, however. Within the next decade the population tripled, houses moved off of Main Street and the commercial district solidified. By 1929 the wooden buildings were torn down and replaced with mostly two-story brick structures, completely infilled for six blocks. Today you will see one of the most intact early 20th century main streets in western North Carolina. In addition to a Saunter down Main Street this book contains a walk through the town's historic West End. From the time Hendersonville was founded in the 1840s through the early 20th century Main Street was the primary commercial and residential district. In that time there were barely 1,000 residents. The town grew rapidly after 1910 and Main Street filled with businesses. Many of the displaced homeowners built new houses on the West Side. Until post World War II lots were divided and built on and today 244 structures are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The West Side, containing 111 acres, is Hendersonville's largest historic district. For the most part the West Side extended the street grid created for the city. The lots were often divided neatly into building sites 50 to 100 feet wide. Corner lots were spacious - 400 feet wide by 200 feet deep and many remain large today. No two houses in the west Side look alike. They were created by local builders, some no doubt guided by architectural pattern books. Some were architect-designed. As the West Side neighborhood pushes into its second century, many of its houses would still be recognizable to their original owners. Finally, there is a walking tour of Connemara, known famously as the final home of Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Carl Sandburg but has a richer, less-known history that dates back to the days when Flat Rock, North Carolina was known throughout the South as "the Charleston of the Mountains."

Book Nazi POWs in the Tar Heel State

Download or read book Nazi POWs in the Tar Heel State written by Robert D. Billinger and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 10,000 German prisoners of war were interned in eighteen camps in North Carolina during World War II. Yet apart from the guards, civilian workers, and FBI and local police who tracked escapees, most people were--and remain--unaware of their presence. Utilizing interviews with former prisoners and their guards, Red Cross and U.S. military reports, German-language camp newspapers, local print media, letters, memoirs, and other archival sources, Robert Billinger is the first to chronicle in detail the German POW experience in North Carolina during WWII. Billinger captures the perceptions of sixty years ago, and demonstrates how the stereotype that all Germans were Nazis evolved over time. The book is dedicated to the insights gained by many POWs, guards, and civilians: that wartime enemies could become life-long friends.

Book Feng Shui Simply

Download or read book Feng Shui Simply written by Cheryl Grace and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Feng Shui Simply, Cheryl Grace digs deep into the principles of feng shui to present an exciting new view of this age-old concept and shows that feng shui isn’t just about rearranging your furniture or painting your walls; it goes much deeper. She opens your eyes to how feng shui can be used to balance the energy of every part of your life—both in your external and internal environments. Grace shows that bringing your focus to both of these worlds is a powerful way to design the life you’re meant to live. In these pages, Grace takes you on a journey to design your living spaces using the classic Bagua map—a chart separating physical spaces into nine areas, each representing a different aspect of life, such as wealth, family, and career. But perhaps more importantly, she goes one step further, teaching you the inner work of feng shui using her own Inner Wisdom Bagua map, which correlates the characteristics, beliefs, and attitudes that will help you flourish in each area of your life. Sharing anecdotes from her own experience switching careers from an ESPN executive to a feng shui consultant, as well as her clients’ success stories, Grace walks you through each area of the standard and Inner Wisdom Bagua maps to create unique solutions for your life. She teaches you to harness the power of your intuition to determine what’s true and important for you. And she offers practical tools based on concepts such as Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, and the Magical Day, to help you figure out which enhancements will be the most effective in transforming your life. By celebrating key principles like universal gratitude, a positive outlook, and living in the present moment, she shows you how to manage life on a day-to-day basis and points you toward your life’s true purpose.

Book I Am Half Sick of Shadows

Download or read book I Am Half Sick of Shadows written by Alan Bradley and published by Doubleday Canada. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What better Christmas surprise for detective-in-training Flavia de Luce than a dreadful murder under Buckshaw's roof - and a snowbound house full of suspects! It's Christmas time, and our beloved Flavia is tucked away in her laboratory whipping up a sticky concoction to trap that infamous sneak, Saint Nick, and thereby prove once and for all - despite the claims of her evil sisters - that he does exist. But she is soon distracted from her task: Colonel de Luce, in desperate need of funds, has rented the family's crumbling manor house to a film company for the holidays. When its crew arrives from London to shoot a movie starring the reclusive and renowned actress, Phyllis Wyvern, there's no end to the disruptions - and dramas - demanding Flavia's attention. When Wyvern is convinced to perform a famous scene to help raise funds for the local church, it is decided that Buckshaw Manor is the only suitable location. Its foyer alone is bigger than the parish hall, and could fit every man, woman, and child in Bishop's Lacey, to a soul. It's almost Christmas Eve, but - to no one's surprise - all of the village inhabitants fight their way through a raging snowstorm to be in the audience that magical night. As the actors take to the stage, however, the blizzard sets in, and it becomes clear that the villagers will have to hunker down at Buckshaw for the night. Sleeping head to toe in the de Luces' foyer seems amenable to most, until word spreads of the evening's shocking conclusion - Phyllis Wyvern is found strangled to death in the Blue Bedroom, with a length of film from one of her movies tied in an elaborate bow around her neck. But who among the assembled guests would stage such a chilling scene? As the storm worsens and the list of suspects grows, Flavia must use every ounce of her chemical cleverness and crime-solving prowess to ferret out a killer hidden in plain sight. But when she does piece the puzzle together and deduce who has committed this twisted crime, will Flavia be able to escape in one piece?
