Book excerpt: Nena is a nomadic carny, shrewd, witty, of few words. Crossing places plagued by racial and ethnic wars, she brings the joy of the carousel on which all are allowed, all are equal and welcome. During her wanderings along Yugoslavia she meets Katarina called Carì, a Roma girl. The two immediately befriend each other, and the carny decides to take the little girl with her first to Croatia and then to Bosnia to raise her as a daughter, teaching her the ethics of carousing. Now that Carì is grown and close to becoming a mother, she must keep the carny ethic alive. Nena has mysteriously disappeared just as she had appeared in Carì's life. Katarina wants to fulfill her promise to the woman who has been like a mother to her: to rebuild the merry-go-round, to reestablish its ethos. To return to flying those colorful little horses that had brought so much joy and hope to children who had grown up too fast, and to their parents forced to face the danger of war every day. Katarina retraces her memories, her nomadic years among cities plagued by bombs and racism, by plots, violence and horrors inexplicable to those who, as a child and then as a teenager, search for themselves and their real parents, clinging to the mysterious carousel. May Nena herself be her real mother? Translator: Simona Casaccia PUBLISHER: TEKTIME

Book The New Mother and other stories

Download or read book The New Mother and other stories written by Lucy Lane Clifford and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-11-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The writings of Lucy lane Clifford (who also wrote as Mrs W K Clifford) were for almost a century completely lost to obscurity, but during her lifetime this extraordinary woman was a friend and confidant of Henry James, Rudyard Kipling, Thomas Hardy and other luminaries of the day. This collection contains possibly her best works. Her writings, originally penned as cautionary didactic tales for Victorian children, present themselves as a cycle of unique fables of existential dread and alienation, worthy (at their best) of a Kafka or Borges. Ranging from paeans to autism ('Wooden Tony' or 'The Paper Fish') or surreal horror ('The New Mother') this collection asks for Mrs Clifford to be reappraised as a precursor to 20th century and 21st century literature. This collection has been augmented with collages by artist D M Mitchell to show the link to such allegorical artists as Leonora Carrington, Max Ernst and Toyen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of short stories, I discuss many aspects of my years growing up. Sometimes in life we hear of the unusual lives of people's childhood and adolescence and we ask ourselves how did people survive? What you do not see is the treasure trove of experiences that shapes people's lives. But it gives them a story to tell. Even though I grew up with a lot less than others, I do not think I was ever lacking. There was much love around me and I am happy for the experiences. It certainly shaped who I am. In this book I honor my family and the sacrifices they made for me to accomplish my goals. In addition some of the stories enclosed in this book have been with me for a long time as I waited for the opportunity to share them with you. Learn about the people you come in contact with everyday. There are many textures and levels that make them who they are. They have stories to tell too. Enjoy.

Book Frank Merriwell s Cruise

Download or read book Frank Merriwell s Cruise written by Burt L. Standish and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frank Merriwell was the fictional creation of Gilbert Patten, who wrote under the pseudonym Burt L. Standish. The model for all later American juvenile sports fiction, Merriwell excelled at football, baseball, crew, and track at Yale while solving mysteries and righting wrongs. He played with great strength and received traumatic blows without injury. A biographical entry on Patten noted that Frank Merriwell "had little in common with his creator or his readers." Patten offered some background on his character: "The name was symbolic of the chief characteristics I desired my hero to have. Frank for frankness, merry for a happy disposition, well for health and abounding vitality." Merriwell's classmates observed, "He never drinks. That's how he keeps himself in such fine condition all the time. He will not smoke, either, and he takes his exercise regularly. He is really a remarkable freshie." Merriwell originally appeared in a series of magazine stories starting April 18, 1896 ("Frank Merriwell: or, First Days at Fardale") in Tip Top Weekly, continuing through 1912, and later in dime novels and comic books. Patten would confine himself to a hotel room for a week to write an entire story.
