Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are more than 15,000 museums in our country, visitors get to see only about five percent of any institution’s collections. Most museums simply don’t have room to display everything they’ve got. However, there are a wide variety of surprising and intriguing reasons that, for example, the Smithsonian Institution doesn’t display its collection of condoms, Florida's Lightner Museum locks up all but one of its shrunken heads, and a world-class stash of Japanese erotica (shunga) art was kept in the Honolulu Museum of Art's storage until only recently. Each item or collection included in this volume is described and placed in context with stories and interviews that explore the historical, social, cultural, political, environmental, or other circumstances that led to keeping that object or group of objects out of public view--the ultimate museum buff's voyeuristic experience. Color photographs of the artifacts are included.

Book The Secret

Download or read book The Secret written by Byron Preiss and published by ibooks. This book was released on 2016-10-05 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tale begins over three-hundred years ago, when the Fair People—the goblins, fairies, dragons, and other fabled and fantastic creatures of a dozen lands—fled the Old World for the New, seeking haven from the ways of Man. With them came their precious jewels: diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls... But then the Fair People vanished, taking with them their twelve fabulous treasures. And they remained hidden until now... Across North America, these twelve treasures, over ten-thousand dollars in precious jewels, are buried. The key to finding each can be found within the twelve full color paintings and verses of The Secret. Yet The Secret is much more than that. At long last, you can learn not only the whereabouts of the Fair People's treasure, but also the modern forms and hiding places of their descendants: the Toll Trolls, Maitre D'eamons, Elf Alphas, Tupperwerewolves, Freudian Sylphs, Culture Vultures, West Ghosts and other delightful creatures in the world around us. The Secret is a field guide to them all. Many "armchair treasure hunt" books have been published over the years, most notably Masquerade (1979) by British artist Kit Williams. Masquerade promised a jewel-encrusted golden hare to the first person to unravel the riddle that Williams cleverly hid in his art. In 1982, while everyone in Britain was still madly digging up hedgerows and pastures in search of the golden hare, The Secret: A Treasure Hunt was published in America. The previous year, author and publisher Byron Preiss had traveled to 12 locations in the continental U.S. (and possibly Canada) to secretly bury a dozen ceramic casques. Each casque contained a small key that could be redeemed for one of 12 jewels Preiss kept in a safe deposit box in New York. The key to finding the casques was to match one of 12 paintings to one of 12 poetic verses, solve the resulting riddle, and start digging. Since 1982, only two of the 12 casques have been recovered. The first was located in Grant Park, Chicago, in 1984 by a group of students. The second was unearthed in 2004 in Cleveland by two members of the Quest4Treasure forum. Preiss was killed in an auto accident in the summer of 2005, but the hunt for his casques continues.

This book was released on 2024-07-05 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover the captivating secrets and awe-inspiring wonders of Japan with "Japan's Hidden Gems: 100 Surprising Facts About the Land of the Rising Sun That Will Blow Your Mind." This extraordinary book takes you on an unforgettable journey through the rich history, vibrant culture, and fascinating traditions of one of the world's most enigmatic nations. Uncover the truth behind the mysterious samurai warriors, learn about the incredible health benefits of Japanese cuisine, and be amazed by the mind-boggling innovations that have shaped Japan's past and present. With each turn of the page, you'll gain a deeper appreciation for the intricate tapestry of customs, beliefs, and accomplishments that make Japan truly unique. Here are just a few of the 100 remarkable facts you'll find inside: The Jōmon period (c. 14,000–300 BCE) marked the beginning of Japanese civilization, with hunter-gatherers creating intricate pottery designs that laid the foundation for Japan's rich artistic tradition. These early inhabitants subsisted on a diet of fish, wild plants, and game, and their pottery, known as Jōmon ware, is considered some of the oldest in the world. The arrival of Buddhism in Japan from Korea in 538 CE, during the Asuka period (538–710), had a profound impact on Japanese culture, art, and politics. Buddhism quickly gained popularity among the ruling class, leading to the construction of numerous temples and the creation of breathtaking Buddhist art. The Heian period (794–1185) is often considered the pinnacle of classical Japanese culture. With the relocation of the capital to Heian-kyō (present-day Kyoto) in 794, this era saw the flourishing of art, literature, and poetry amid the elegant court life of the imperial city. The Tale of Genji, written by Murasaki Shikibu during this period, is celebrated as a masterpiece of world literature. The Tokugawa shogunate implemented the policy of sakoku (closed country) in 1639, which limited foreign interaction and banned Christianity in an effort to maintain stability and control. This policy, which remained in effect for over 200 years, had a profound impact on Japanese society, fostering a unique cultural identity and contributing to the country's isolation from the rest of the world. The Meiji Restoration of 1868 marked the end of the Tokugawa shogunate and the beginning of a new era in Japanese history. Driven by a desire to modernize the country, Japan adopted Western technology, institutions, and ideas while seeking to preserve its own cultural identity. This period set Japan on the path to becoming a modern, industrialized nation. "Japan's Hidden Gems" is not just a collection of fascinating facts; it's a celebration of the indomitable spirit and resourcefulness of the Japanese people. Through vivid descriptions and engaging storytelling, this book brings Japan's past and present to life, offering a deeper understanding of the forces that have shaped this remarkable nation. Ranging from Peru to Papua New Guinea, it uncovers neglected wonders in offbeat corners of the world or locked away in the store rooms of the world's great museums. Some are hidden accidentally: by a rock-fall, a shift in a trade route, or through the drift of history. Many are hidden by changes of taste, marginalized because they don't fit into established ideas of art - works by artists such as Norman Rockwell, Nek Chand, and Niki de St Phalle. Other great works, like the the dazzling Très Riches Heures manuscript and the Mona Lisa, are being virtually hidden by the demands of conservation. And there are penty of treasures still waiting to be revealed - the Q'in Emperor's tomb or Leonardo's lost fresco The Battle of Anghiari. He sets forth a surprising and unfamiliar alternative canon of works that offers a fresh and controversial take on the world of art.
