Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How could early modern Venice, a city renowned for its political freedom and social harmony, also have become a center of religious dissent and inquisitorial repression? To answer this question, John Martin develops an innovative approach that deftly connects social and cultural history. The result is a profoundly important contribution to Renaissance and Reformation studies. Martin offers a vivid re-creation of the social and cultural worlds of the Venetian heretics—those men and women who articulated their hopes for religious and political reform and whose ideologies ranged from evangelical to anabaptist and even millenarian positions. In exploring the connections between religious beliefs and social experience, he weaves a rich tapestry of Renaissance urban life that is sure to intrigue all those involved in anthropological, religious, and historical studies—students and scholars alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every believer needs to understand that the Church as an entity has an enemy–Satan, whose assignment is to ensure that the church never fulfills her purpose. Many of our plans may be hindered if we do not understand this enemy, his strategies and how to fix them. Also, a lot of the problems and challenges we face in the church today are caused by church people. Our purpose to reach the world is being slowed down because, there are some amongst us who are fighting against us. They are part of the church yet they both consciously and unconsciously fight against her. This is what I call church sabotage. Therefore, in this book, I will expose the several ways Satan works through such people to sabotage the church, how the spirit of rebellion and strife works, and how we can consciously come to the unity of the faith.

Download or read book Natural Law Constitutionalism Reason of State and War written by J. A. Fernández-Santamaría and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural Law, Constitutionalism, Reason of State, and War: Counter-Reformation Spanish Political Thought (Volumes I and II) aims at understanding how Spanish thinkers in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries approached the emerging institution of the state. The volumes are divided evenly into four distinct but related parts that cover the Spaniards' central concerns. In the first, a fundamental question is asked: Is the state a natural institution? In the second, the theme is the best form of government. The third part is concerned with the imperative need to define the ethical boundaries beyond which the state must not trespass. Finally, the fourth part examines the question of war as an instrument of policy.

Book excerpt: Universally Foreign is a collection of writings from my experiences. Growing up with parents that experienced the civil rights movement and understanding the phrase,"it takes an entire village to raise a child", I have to step back and see that our society has changed quite a bit. I grew up in the south with all of the prejudices that it has along with the beauty of community. I've tried to capture the innocence of that and the moral transformation along with the truly indecent proposals and my struggles. I hope no one is offended by my expressions but are able to see life through another set of eyes.

Book Parties as Governments in Eurasia 1913 1991

Download or read book Parties as Governments in Eurasia 1913 1991 written by Ivan Sablin and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the political parties which emerged on the territories of the former Ottoman, Qing, Russian, and Habsburg empires and not only took over government power but merged with government itself. It discusses how these parties, disillusioned with previous constitutional and parliamentary reforms, justified their takeovers with programs of controlled or supervised economic and social development, including acting as the mediators between the various social and ethnic groups in the respective territories. It pays special attention to nation-building through the party, to institutions (both constitutional and de facto), and to the global and comparative aspects of one-party regimes. It explores the origins of one-party regimes in China, Czechoslovakia, Korea, the Soviet Union, Turkey, Yugoslavia, and beyond, the roles of socialism and nationalism in the parties’ approaches to development and state-building, as well the pedagogical aspirations of the ruling elites. Hence, by revisiting the dynamics of the transition from the earlier imperial formations via constitutionalism to one-party governments, and by assessing the internal and external dynamics of one-party regimes after their establishment, the book more precisely locates this type of regime within the contemporary world’s political landscape. Moreover, it emphasises that one-party regimes thrived on both sides of the Cold War and in some of the non-aligned states, and that although some state socialist one-party regimes collapsed in 1989–1991, in other places historically dominant parties and new parties have continued to monopolize political power. • ISBN : 1139498010
  • Pages : 333 pages

Download or read book Inventing the Enemy written by Wendy Z. Goldman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-08 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inventing the Enemy uses stories of personal relationships to explore the behaviour of ordinary people during Stalin's terror. Communist Party leaders strongly encouraged ordinary citizens and party members to 'unmask the hidden enemy' and people responded by flooding the secret police and local authorities with accusations. By 1937, every workplace was convulsed by hyper-vigilance, intense suspicion and the hunt for hidden enemies. Spouses, co-workers, friends and relatives disavowed and denounced each other. People confronted hideous dilemmas. Forced to lie to protect loved ones, they struggled to reconcile political imperatives and personal loyalties. Workplaces were turned into snake pits. The strategies that people used to protect themselves - naming names, pre-emptive denunciations, and shifting blame - all helped to spread the terror. Inventing the Enemy, a history of the terror in five Moscow factories, explores personal relationships and individual behaviour within a pervasive political culture of 'enemy hunting'.

Book Medicine Health and the Public Sphere in Britain 1600 2000

Download or read book Medicine Health and the Public Sphere in Britain 1600 2000 written by Steve Sturdy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-08-21 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medicine is concerned with the most intimate aspects of private life. Yet it is also a focus for diverse forms of public organization and action. In this volume, an international team of scholars use the techniques of medical history to analyse the changing boundaries and constitution of the public sphere from early modernity to the present day. In a series of detailed historical case studies, contributors examine the role of various public institutions - both formal and informal, voluntary and statutory - in organizing and coordinating collective action on medical matters. In so doing, they challenge the determinism and fatalism of Habermas's overarching and functionalist account of the rise and fall of the public sphere. Of essential interest to historians and sociologists of medicine, this book will also be of value to historians of modern Britain, historical sociologists, and those engaged in studying the work of Jürgen Habermas.

Book Dilemmas of Reconciliation

Download or read book Dilemmas of Reconciliation written by Carol Prager and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can bitter enemies who have inflicted unspeakable acts of cruelty on each other live together in peace? At a time in history when most organized violence consists of civil wars and when nations resort to genocidal policies, when horrendous numbers of civilians have been murdered, raped, or expelled from their homes, this book explores the possibility of forgiveness. The contributors to this book draw upon the insights of history, political science, philosophy, and psychology to examine the trauma left in the wake of such actions, using, as examples, numerous case studies from the Holocaust, Russia, Cambodia, Guatemala, South Africa, and even Canada. They consider the fundamental psychological and philosophical issues that have to be confronted, offer insights about measures that can be taken to facilitate healing, and summarize what has been learned from previous struggles. Dilemmas of Reconciliation is a pioneering effort that explores the extraordinary challenges that must be faced in the aftermath of genocide or barbarous civil wars. How these challenges of reconciliation are faced and resolved will affect not only the victims’ ability to go on with their lives but will impact regional stability and, ultimately, world peace.
