Book Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody

Download or read book Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody written by Bill Markley and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-08-15 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody were considered heroes and the greatest plainsmen of their time. They were larger than life, legendary characters. They knew where to locate water, good grass for livestock, sheltered campsites, and game for hunting. They knew how to survive the blistering heat and terrific thunderstorms of summer and the subzero blizzards of winter. They could avoid Indians or act as trackers following the trails of Indians as well as desperados. They were expert marksmen and did not back down from a fight. They rushed in where others held back. Hickok, a frontier wagon and stagecoach driver, became a Union spy during the Civil War, furthering his reputation after the war as a frontier Army scout, gunfighter, and lawman. Cody, who claimed to ride for the Pony Express, served in the Union Army, and became legendary as an expert buffalo hunter and Army scout. Hickok and Cody were good friends and experienced a series of adventures together. Hickok traveled to Deadwood, Dakota Territory, during the 1876 Black Hills goldrush where he was assassinated by Jack McCall. Cody continued scouting for the Army and after the Battle of the Little Big Horn, won a one-on-one duel with a Cheyenne warrior, Yellow Hair. Cody went on to become one of the most well-known showmen in the world with his Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. Wild Bill Hickok and Buffalo Bill Cody: Plainsmen, the fourth book in the Legendary West series, explores the lives of these two well-known characters.

Book They Called Him Wild Bill

Download or read book They Called Him Wild Bill written by Joseph G. Rosa and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: His contemporaries called him Wild Bill, and newspapermen and others made him a legend in his own time. Among western characters only General George Armstrong Custer and Buffalo Bill Cody are as readily recognized by the general public. In writing this biography, Joseph G. Rosa has expressed the hope that "Hickok emerges as a man and not a legend." For this comprehensive revision of his earlier biography of Wild Bill the author was allowed to work from newly available materials in the possession of the Hickok family. He also discovered new material pertaining to Wild Bill’s Civil War exploits and his service as a marshal and found the pardon file of his murderer, John McCall. Additional, rare photographs of Wild Bill are published here for the first time. The results of Rosa’s additional research make this second edition the best biography of Wild Bill likely to be written for years to come.

Book Agnes Lake Hickok

Download or read book Agnes Lake Hickok written by Carolyn M. Bowers and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2012-11-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first woman in America to own and operate a circus, Agnes Lake spent thirty years under the Big Top before becoming the wife of Wild Bill Hickok—a mere five months before he was killed. Although books abound on the famous lawman, Agnes’s life has remained obscured by circus myth and legend. Linda A. Fisher and Carrie Bowers have written the first biography of this colorful but little-known circus performer. Agnes originally found fame as a slack-wire walker and horseback rider, and later as an animal trainer. Her circus career spanned more than four decades. Following the murder of her first husband, Bill Lake, she was the sole manager of the “Hippo-Olympiad and Mammoth Circus.” While taking her show to Abilene, she met town marshal Hickok and five years later she married him. After Hickok’s death, Agnes traveled with P. T. Barnum and Buffalo Bill Cody, and managed her daughter Emma Lake’s successful equestrian career. This account of a remarkable life cuts through fictions about Agnes’s life, including her own embellishments, to uncover her true story. Numerous illustrations, including rare photographs and circus memorabilia, bring Agnes’s world to life.

Book Wild Bill Hickok Gunfighter

Download or read book Wild Bill Hickok Gunfighter written by Joseph G. Rosa and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2013-07-17 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “James Butler Hickok, generally called ‘Wild Bill,’ epitomized the archetypal gunfighter, that half-man, half-myth that became the heir to the mystique of the duelist when that method of resolving differences waned. . . . Easy access to a gun and whiskey coupled with gambling was the cause of most gunfights--few of which bore any resemblance to the gentlemanly duel of earlier times. . . . Hickok’s gunfights were unusual in that most of them were ‘fair’ fights, not just killings resulting from rage, jealousy over a woman, or drunkenness. And, the majority of his encounters were in his role as lawman or as an individual upholding the law.”--from Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter Wild Bill Hickok (1837–1876) was a Civil War spy and scout, Indian fighter, gambler, and peace officer. He was also one of the greatest gunfighters in the West. His peers referred to his reflexes as “phenomenal” and to his skill with a pistol as “miraculous.” In Wild Bill Hickok, Gunfighter, Joseph G. Rosa, the world’s foremost authority on Hickok, provides an informative examination of Hickok’s many gunfights. Rosa describes the types of guns used by Hickok and illustrates his use of the plains’ style of “quick draw,” as well as examining other elements of the Hickok legend. He even reconsiders the infamous “dead man’s hand” allegedly held by Hickok when he was shot to death at age thirty-nine while playing poker. Numerous photographs and drawings accompany Rosa’s down-to-earth text.

Download or read book The Ultimate Wild West Collection written by Charles River Charles River Editors and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Includes biographies of each famous Western icon. *Discusses the mysteries and legends of their famous lives and deaths. *Comprehensively covers legendary events like the Shootout at the OK Corral, and the murders of Wild Bill and Jesse James. *Includes a Bibliography on each person for further reading. Space may be the final frontier, but no frontier has ever captured the American imagination like the "Wild West," which still evokes images of dusty cowboys, outlaws, gunfights, gamblers, and barroom brawls over 100 years after the West was settled. A constant fixture in American pop culture, the 19th century American West continues to be vividly and colorful portrayed not just as a place but as a state of mind. The spirit of adventure, the courage, the swagger, and even the hard drinking and violence have all come to capture what it meant to be an American at the time, and with so many interesting figures straddling both sides of the law, morality has gone out the window. Colorful lawmen like Wyatt Earp and Wild Bill became known for meting out justice but also taking things into their own hands, while Doc Holliday and Calamity Jane have gone down in history as eccentric sidekicks. Outlaws like Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid remain just as well known, and they have been long associated with daring heists and conspiracies surrounding their deaths. And Buffalo Bill captured all of the sights and sounds in his famous Wild West show, bringing the West to life all over the world. Each Western icon forged their own enduring legacy, but many of them also knew each other. Wyatt Earp, the law enforcer, gambler, saloon keeper, and vigilante, forged an unlikely friendship with hot-tempered dentist turned gambler Doc Holliday that proved pivotal in some of the West's most legendary events. Wild Bill and Calamity Jane had one of the most legendary and mythologized relationship, with Jane claiming they were married and Wild Bill's friends claiming he could barely stand her. Wyatt Earp (1848-1929), the "toughest and deadliest gunman of his day," symbolized the swagger, the heroism, and even the lawlessness of the West, notorious for being a law enforcer, gambler, saloon keeper, and vigilante. Then there was John Henry "Doc" Holliday (1851-1887), a dentist turned professional gambler who was widely recognized as one of the fastest draws in the West and one of its quirkiest figures. The only thing that might have been faster than the deadly gunman's draw was his violent temper, which was easily set off when Holliday was drunk, a frequent occurrence. By the early 1880s, Holliday had been arrested nearly 20 times. And then there's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, the West's most famous outlaw duo, who will always be associated with each other despite the fact there's no indication that they had any particularly close friendship or relationship aside from being members of the same gang. The Ultimate Wild West Collection chronicles the lives, legends, myths, lies, and legacies of the West's most famous individuals, separating fact from fiction and analyzing how they have affected the past and the present. Along with pictures of important people, places, and events, bibliographies, and a Table of Contents, you will learn about these Western icons like never before.
