Book excerpt: Heterogeneous catalysis is a chemistry term which describes catalysis where the catalyst is in a different phase (ie. solid, liquid and gas, but also oil and water) to the reactants. Heterogeneous catalysts provide a surface for the chemical reaction to take place on. In order for the reaction to occur, one or more of the reactants must diffuse to the catalyst surface and adsorb onto it. After reaction, the products must desorb from the surface and diffuse away from the solid surface. Frequently, this transport of reactants and products from one phase to another plays a dominant role in limiting the reaction rate. Understanding these transport phenomena and surface chemistry such as dispersion is an important area of heterogeneous catalyst research. Catalyst surface area may also be considered. Mesoporous silicates, for example, have found utility as catalysts because their surface areas may be in excess of 1000 m2/g, which increases the probability that a reactant molecule in solution will come in contact with the catalyst surface and adsorb. If diffusion rates are not taken into account, the reaction rates for various reactions on surfaces depend solely on the rate constants and reactant concentrations. Asymmetric heterogeneous catalysis can be used to synthesise enantiomerically pure compounds using chiral heterogeneous catalysts. The field is of great industrial and environmental importance and the chapters in this book have been invited for their importance.

Book excerpt: THE PHYSICAL BASIS FOR HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSIS is the proceedings of the ninth Battelle Colloquium in the Materials Sciences, held in Gstaad, Switzerland, September 2-6, 1974. It took as its theme the application of modern theoretical and experimental surface physics to heterogeneous catalysis. Progress in the field by classical chemical methods seemed to have slowed down, at a time when the need for better catalysts was particularly great. The Organizing Committee thought it might be possible to accelerate progress by the application of the powerful techniques evolved in recent years for studying atomically clean surfaces. However, the translation of ideas derived from clean single crystal surfaces with well characterized chemisorbed layers to real catalysts with high ratios of surface to mass on which reactions were taking place and requiring transport of mass and energy is a giant step, raising many questions and requiring thorough discussion by surface physicists on the one hand and catalytic chemists on the other. The 1974 Battelle Colloquium provided a forum for this exchange. As its usual custom, the Colloquium started the first day of introduc tory lectures by three distinguished scientists who have contributed impor tantly over many years to this field.

Book excerpt: This conference on Catalysis was held under the auspices ofthe NATO Science Committee as part of its continuing effort to promote the useful progress of science through international cooperation. The Science Committee Conferences are deliberately designed and struc tured to focus expert attention on what is not known, rather than what is known. The participants are carefully selected to bring together a variety of complementary viewpoints. Through intensive group discussion, they seek to reach agreement on conclusions and recommendations for future research which will be of value to the scientific community. We believe that the endeavour has been particularly successful in the pre sent case. Some twenty-five papers, either in the form of reprints or specially written reviews were contributed by the participants for advance circulation, to outline the state-of-the art in the three areas ofheterogeneous, homogeneous and metalloenzyme catalysis and to focus attention on key problems. The availability of this background material precluded the need for lengthy intro ductory presentations and permitted rapid initiation of interdisciplinary discussions. All participants gave generously and enthusiastically of their expertise and effort during the week of the meeting, of ten long past normal bedtime hours, and we extend to them our deep gratitude.
