Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of the amphibians and reptiles in a sanctuary in the Four Holes Swamp, South Carolina, in 1976 revealed 62 species. An additional 27 species may have been residents. Species diversity and abundance were greatest in upland areas around the swamp and lowest on the oak flats that are often regarded as the most valuable swamp habitats. A few species were restricted to cypress creeks. Springs on the bluffs that border the swamp favor several species, including some species that are more common in cooler regions. The results of the survey were evaluated based on 50-year trends in population sizes of amphibian and reptilian species at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center in Maryland and on 40-year trends in population sizes of amphibian and reptilian species on the University of Kansas Fitch Natural History Reservation to predict the possible consequences of different kinds of management. On the Fitch Reservation, where natural landscape patterns are mixed woodlands and prairies, all kinds of active management were discouraged, and succession produced an almost unbroken forest. By the late 1980s, 21 of the 31 herpetofaunal resident species had disappeared or declined significantly Changes at the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, where management sought to maintain existing landscape patterns, included nearly equal losses and gains. As many as half of the amphibian and reptilian species of the Four Holes Swamp may decline or be extirpated if all habitats proceed to climax communities, and even management to maintain present habitats may affect as many as 10% of the species. But natural disturbances may help to maintain habitat diversity and species richness. Conservation goals for the Four Holes Swamp should be based on the role of the swamp in the broader landscape.

Amphibians and reptiles have been identified as being particularly susceptible to negative road impacts. Many species migrate annually among habitats to support basic life history requirements such as breeding, development, foraging, and overwintering. For these species, individuals may need to successfully cross roads multiple times each year for the population to persist. Many are slow-moving and freeze in the presence of danger, making it almost impossible for them to avoid oncoming vehicles. Although there are a plethora of road mortality location and count data, the effects of road mortality on the long-term viability of amphibian and reptile populations and metapopulations are mostly unknown due to a lack of information on their abundance, vital rates, behavior, and spatial and temporal dynamics.

And, even more disturbing, amphibians were disappearing not just from areas settled by humans but from regions of the world once believed to be pristine. Under the mantle of the Declining Amphibian Populations Task Force, this timely book addresses three fundamental questions for the midwestern United States: are amphibians declining; if so, why; and, if so, what can be done to halt these losses? In the Midwest--defined here as Missouri, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan--there can be no doubt that the number of salamanders and frogs has declined with Euro-American settlement and the conversion to an agriculturally dominated landscape. Habitat loss and landscape fragmentation have been major factors in this decline, as have aquacultural uses of natural wetlands. Bullfrog introductions have eliminated populations of native amphibians, and collecting for the biological supply trade has reduced the number of individuals within many populations. The goal of the forty-two essays in this well-documented, well-illustrated book is to put between two covers all we know now about the status of midwestern amphibians. By doing this, the editor has created a readily accessible historical record for future studies.
