Book excerpt: Propertius is a poet of the Augustan period, a successor of the great Hellenistic elegiac poets Callimachus and Philitas, and a precursor of Ovid. His account of his fictionalized affair with his beloved alter ego Cynthia is the purest expression of the spirit of love elegy, setting them as a pair against war, epic, and (apparently) Augustus himself. This is an author read by virtually all students of Classical Latin. Cynthia provides a lucid attempt to understand and correct the many difficulties in the transmitted text. It consists of a commentary on the whole corpus, together with a prose translation (including alternative versions of ambiguous phrasing). In its clear exposition of technical problems, the book will serve as an introduction to Latin textual criticism in the modern age, and to elegiac poetic style.

Book Statius Silvae 5

Download or read book Statius Silvae 5 written by Bruce Gibson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-10-06 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition deals with Book 5 of Statius' Silvae, which has often been neglected in thematic treatments of the poet's work. The book is notable for its concern with Statius himself - one poem is a lament for his father, who was himself a poet and a teacher. As well as discussing issues of linguistic usage and textual problems (which are numerous), the commentary examines such aspects of literary interpretation as the use of allusion and the role of genre, and also includes a conspectus of the historical and cultural background. This is an invaluable introduction to the work of a learned, and increasingly appreciated, poet.

Download or read book Reading Sulpicia written by Mathilde Skoie and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2002 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the representation of the Augustan poet Sulpicia in commentaries, this book investigates the interpretative strategies involved in the reading of an ancient text. Mathilde Skoie discusses a selection of commentaries from the Renaissance to the present day, combining the history ofclassical scholarhip, philology, feminist literary theory, and reception theory. The six short love poems of Sulpicia (Corpus Tibullianum 3. 13-18) have, throughout history, been the subject of numerous different interpretations and judgements. The poems' ambivalent status as poetry, the uncertainties surrounding authorship, the female intrusion in a male-dominated world, andquestions about canon and 'feminine Latin' are some of the many issues that make them interesting for an investigation of classical scholarship. The poems can thus be used as a showcase for how commentaries are an interpretative and historically situated genre.Reading Sulpicia is the first monograph on Sulpicia and her reception, and thereby fills a gap in the literature concerning both reception studies and the study of Sulpicia herself.

Book Oxford Readings in Ovid

Download or read book Oxford Readings in Ovid written by Peter E. Knox and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2006-12-22 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No other ancient poet has had such a hold on the imagination of readers as Ovid. Through the centuries, artists, writers, and poets have found in his work inspiration for new creative endeavours. This anthology of twenty of the most influential papers published in the last thirty years represents the broad range of critical and scholarly approaches to Ovid's work. The entire range of his poetry, from the Amores to the Epistles from the Black Sea, is discussed by some of the leading scholars of Latin poetry, employing, critical methods ranging from philology to contemporary literary theory. In an introductory essay, Peter Knox surveys Ovidian scholarship over this period and locates the assembled papers within recent critical trends. Taken together, the articles in this collection offer the interested reader, whether experienced scholar or novice, an entrée into the current critical discourse on Ovid, who is at once one of the most accessible authors of classical antiquity and one of the least understood.
