Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States Navy, and Biographical Sketches of American Naval Heroes: From the Formation of the Navy to the Close of the Mexican War The present work, therefore, differs from any yet published. It is intended to combine the advantages of all, so far as this is possible, within the compass of a single volume. It gives in a compact mass, what is elsewhere to be found only in detached portions. The plan, it is believed, is entirely ori ginal. And the conviction that it will be found acceptable, also, has induced the publishers to expend large sums, in order that the volume may be issued in a style worthy of the subject, and worthy likewise of general patronage. Book The Boys of 1812 and Other Naval Heroes Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boys of 1812 and Other Naval Heroes As we look back upon it now, it is wonderful to think what a daring thing it was for this small and Scattered people, living in their little towns along the seacoast from Maine to Georgia, or on farms and plantations in the country, without an army or navy, without generals, and above all without money, - for money is needed to carry on war more than almost anything else, - to have thus made up their minds to stand up bravely and manfully against such a power as Great Britain (one of the greatest in the world). With all her troops and ships and immense revenues. That we should have come out successfully from a contest SO unequal seems little short of marvellous; and we cannot but think that it was the hand Of an overruling Destiny that enabled us to succeed, by giving us a general as skilful and prudent as Washington, statesmen as Wise as Franklin and Jefferson and Adams, an enemy as indolent as Sir William Howe, and allies as powerful as our good friends the French. Download or read book The Historical Register of the United States Vol 2 Classic Reprint written by Thomas H. Palmer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Historical Register of the United States, Vol. 2 From the disadvantages under which the army has laboured, the little navy of America has been entirely free. The previ' ous embarrassments of commerce rendered it easy for our naval officers to supply themselves with a sufficient number of seamen, and with men too who had all their lives been engaged in simi lar pursuits, and under the most rigorous discipline; for we apprehend that but little difference exists as to discipline and general habits between a merchantman and a ship of war. With these circumstances in view, then, while we rejoice over the brilliant exploits of our naval heroes, let us not doubt but that the American army, when it has overcome the difficulties which have arisen from the long peace with which the United States has been blessed, and from the very nature of its free political institutions, will show what can be achieved by freemen by land_as well as by sea. Book Splendid Deeds of American Heroes on Sea and Land Vol 1

Download or read book Splendid Deeds of American Heroes on Sea and Land Vol 1 written by Bishop Samuel Fallows and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Splendid Deeds of American Heroes on Sea and Land, Vol. 1: Embracing a Comprehensive Summary of the Glorious Naval and Military Events From Washington to Dewey; Living Issues In the portion of this work which treats of "Splendid Deeds" we are brought face to face with the question: "Is war ever justifiable?" And, connected with this interrogatory, is the further question: "Should the deeds of war be enlarged upon and even glorified?" The admirable words of the Rev. F. A. Noble, D. D., which follow this introduction, uttered in the presence of many of the brave heroes of our great civil war, will answer fully the first question. We may say in reply to the second interrogation, that no nation which is worthy to live can sever itself from its past history and disparage the deeds of the men who have helped give it life, continuance, progress and glory. God has put the martial spirit in the breasts of men. It is not a mere survival of a savage ancestry. It is to be a constant force. The youthful spirit must be ever ready to do and dare. Woe to that people when the fires of a generous, self-sacrificing enthusiasm among them shall have died out. Until the better day shall come, as come it surely will, when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more, we must have a well disciplined army and a formidable navy. We must be ready to maintain our providential position among the nations of the earth. By the very possession of the warlike means of self-preservation, and by the unquestioned ability to use them, we shall be able to secure ultimately the peace of mankind. In the unfolding years the martial spirit will not be displayed in the maiming and killing of men. It will find its expression in fighting the great moral battles which will be constantly imminent, until the millennial glory shall flood the globe. In "Splendid Deeds" we have narrated the conflicts with England, with Mexico, with our brethren of the South, with Spain and with the Filipinos. The wars are all over, thank God, except the contest with the guerrilla bands in our island possessions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
