Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of the Early Church These graphic sketches of the "Heroes of the Early Church" are the latest series penned by the distinguished author, whom Spurgeon fittingly called "The Prince of Children's Preachers." The sketches are in many respects the best work of the gifted man. As he ripened in saintship for heaven, his literary style became even more rich with the aroma of the gospel, and so more forcible, simple and crisp than in his earlier writings. The articles were originally prepared for The Youth's World, and were issued in that periodical. The revision and preparation of them for publication in this form has been an easy and delightful task. Indeed, so carefully did Dr. Newton prepare his copy for the press that little was required to be done beyond the omission of some repetitions of statement, necessarily incident to serial articles in a periodical. Dr. Newton had planned another series on the "Heroes of the Modern Church," to follow these, but was compelled by ill health to give up writing them. Yet he continued to work so diligently that the last article from his pen was written for the number of The Youth's World which appeared the month after his death. This book was released on 2017-05-20 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of the Heroes of the Early Church If the heroic element lent a charm to the study of Old Testament characters, it must give an added interest to the study of these makers of the early Church, whose every-day life was so full of heroism for the cross of Christ, and who, with one exception, gave his life for the Master. It would have been interesting to carry out the plan of the Character Studies, as in the first book of the series; but, in order to make the setting clear, it has been necessary to con fine this book to sketches. Rather than stories, that in these studies of the heroes we might also give the history of the Apostolic Church. Download or read book Short Studies of Old Testament Heroes Classic Reprint written by Emma Amelia Robinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-17 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Short Studies of Old Testament Heroes The world will never cease to love the heroic, whether it is found xin man or woman, boy or girl. Even better is the fact that people are rapidly learn ing that heroes are not all of the same pattern, and that they are to be discerned in quiet scenes no less than in those of war and adventure. For a long time the Old Testament has been a wonderful book of heroes, because of the interest aroused by some of its characters, but the circle of these is growing wider, as the real spirit and work of others come to be known, so that now Abel, Amos, and Isaiah are felt to be heroic, along with David, Josiah, and Daniel. Then the great value of these and other characters of the Bible is that they are heroes for God and goodness, for right and for the true religion, and not merely for something that ends with this world. Everybody was talk ing about it. Perpetua was twenty-two years old. Cyprian's father and mother must have known her very well. The two families belonged to the same high-born and wealthy society. They were all pagans together. But Perpetua had become a Christian. It was as if, in Russia, the daughter of a noble family should become an anarchist. Book The Unchangeable Church Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Unchangeable Church Vol 1 of 2 written by Edward J. McGolrick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Unchangeable Church, Vol. 1 of 2: Her Heroes, Her Martyrs, Her Trials, and Her Triumphs Dear Sir: I have read with both pleasure and profit your work on "The Unchangeable Church," and I congratulate you on the completion of these excellent volumes. You have culled some noble and inspiring pages from that great book which the highest minds love to peruse - the history of the Catholic Church - and you have presented them to your readers in simple and truthful language. Your book is truly eloquent and convincing, and its title is amply justified by the history of every century and every nation. The Catholic Church remains at all times the one Unchangeable Church, not alone in her doctrine and government and discipline, but also in her devotion to the best interests of the whole people. She is, indeed, emphatically the Church of the People. In all ages, and amid all conditions, she is the friend of our common humanity, the consoler of woe and sorrow of all kinds, the protector of popular rights, and the intermediary with the Divine Father in heaven. I trust your book may serve to make the Catholic Church better known. May it confirm in their ancestral faith all good Catholics, and be the means of opening the eyes of non-Catholics to the merits and just claims of the Society that was truly founded by Jesus Christ; alone represents fully His principles and His teaching; and is therefore the only religious Society that remains the same from generation to generation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The heart of Christianity is a myth which is also a fact." --C. S. Lewis In From Achilles to Christ, Louis Markos introduces readers to the great narratives of classical mythology from a Christian perspective. From the battles of Achilles and the adventures of Odysseus to the feats of Hercules and the trials of Aeneas, Markos shows how the characters, themes and symbols within these myths both foreshadow and find their fulfillment in the story of Jesus Christ--the "myth made fact." Along the way, he dispels misplaced fears about the dangers of reading classical literature, and offers a Christian approach to the interpretation and appropriation of these great literary works. This engaging and eminently readable book is an excellent resource for Christian students, teachers and readers of classical literature.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Coming of the Saints: Imaginations and Studies in Early Church History and Tradition Strangers and pilgrims, with few or none to notice and keep record of their wanderings, they came to distant countries and to strange peoples. They wandered about, being often destitute, afflicted, and tormented (of whom the world was not worthy). They wandered in deserts and in mountains, and they sheltered in dens and caves of the earth. We know this because something like it has been the almost invariable experience of missionary pioneers through all the succeeding ages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Book of Old Testament Heroes: A Course of Study, Beautifying and Glorifying the Moral and Religious Qualities of Old Testament Characters The aim of religious education is the development Of the religious nature. This it seeks to accomplish through the creation of ideals, the cultivation of right feelings, the formation of right judgments as to what things constitute the higher values, and the awakening in the pupil Of a consciousness of God In himself and m the world. From these naturally proceed personal choices and impulses to God-like action. Religious edu cation succeeds when it thus grows some permanent religious interest. The three institutions which have a duty in the relig ious education of our people are the home, the school, and the church. Present conditions throw most of the responsibility upon the church. The church through its Sunday schools is trying to meet that responsibility. It is filled with a passion to get a more perfect result. After passing through different stages of growth the ideal is now the graded school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
