Book excerpt: "Think what her father would have missed if Kara hadn't been tenacious enough to pursue, not just her own identity, but his as well."—Mika Brzezinski, MSNBC's Morning Joe Kara Hewes had never seen her father, Rhode Island Governor Bruce Sundlun, until one transformational moment when she awoke in the middle of the night as a TV news anchor announced his candidacy. One look at his picture and she knew she needed to find him. Her letters and phone calls went unanswered, so at seventeen, Kara hired a lawyer and announced her paternity suit before a packed press conference. In the middle of the media frenzy, Governor Sundlun did the unexpected and invited Kara to come live with him so he could get to know her better. Kara knew that in order to move forward with her father, she had to make the choice to forgive the past. It was her unconditional love that broke down the barriers separating father and daughter. Book The Liberation of Christmas

Download or read book The Liberation of Christmas written by Richard A. Horsley and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2006-02-14 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current biblical scholarship tends to treat the nativity narratives as having little historical basis and to see in them illustrations of the particular theologies of Matthew and Luke. Nonbiblical scholarship sees in these narratives only an adaptation of traditional folklore themes relating to the birth of the hero. This leaves the ordinary Christian in a vacuum that the mass media and other commercial interests are only too anxious to fill. 'Liberating Christmas' shows that, regardless of whether the nativity narratives are rooted in actual historical situations, they do portray a particular network of social-political relationships. Thus Caesar ruled and taxed peoples, such as the Jews, through client-kings, such as Herod, who ruled with sharply repressive violence. But the narratives also celebrate the birth of a messiah who will finally liberate his people even though he and his family are driven into exile. The Christmas stories as reappraised by this book have, therefore, important political implications, implications not only about first-century Palestine but about contemporary history as well. These latter implications are brought out by an extensive analysis of the political-economic domination exercised in much of Latin America by the United States, domination maintained by Òclient dictators who use death squads (paralleling Herod's slaughter of innocents) to terrorize and control the exploited peasants while driving members of basic Christian communities into exile. 'Liberating Christmas' has as much to say about the 'Pax Americana' as the original nativity narratives had to say about the 'Pax Romana'. The story of Jesus is as important to ordinary readers today as it was when it was first told centuries ago.

Book Bad News on the Doorstep

Download or read book Bad News on the Doorstep written by Joseph Rocco Cervasio and published by Author House. This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greatest Generation was in full bloom during the enigmatic decade of the fifties. In northern New Jersey, The Newark Star Ledger on the doorstep every morning was bringing changing news as that pastoral period came to an end. A blue-collar ethnic family saga evolves that takes you on an epic journey through unfulfilled dreams, with spiritual forks in every road. In the shadows lurk glamorous alternatives of gangland activities and the allure of the entertainment business. But it was a legendary high school football game that truly signaled winds of change would be rushing in. An outstanding athlete and young man, Frank Bonaducci made a decision in that rivalry that would affect peoples lives forever. Surrounding him is his family, as well as a menagerie of unforgettable charactersfrom Bloomfield Avenue in Newark, to the Silver Lake section of Belleville, to Nutleys Park Oval. They roam the pages of this touching story, teaching life-long lessons. Their roles craft a tapestry of life, creating a yearning in our hearts for these days gone by. Every one should have an uncle like "Petee 5 Corners" and an Aunt Bella who danced across imaginary stages as "Bella LaStarr". Each chapter reads like a short story that will touch your heart and soul. The book depicts frustrations of coming of age and traditional rights of passage that honor family traditions . . . more than the family members themselves. It wont take long to learn . . . that when you look back, . . . you should glance, not stare. In his first novel, Joseph Rocco Cervasio escorts us through New Jerseys fabled Essex County in a way that will make Bad News on the Door Step . . . the good news you are seeking. A demanded public speaker, Cervasio has tested throughout the country the stories that have evolved into the tales of this fiction. And you will react the same way his audiences have over the years--youll laugh and cry and say, . . . "no way". Writing with compassion and spiritual discernment that penetrate the wonder of these times, Cervasio takes you from 1959 to the present. From an Italian American feast during New Years Eve at Grandpa Joes, to the end zone of a football field, to Rahway State Prison, to a hot autumn afternoon at the Five Corners of Fifth Street and Bloomfield Avenue, to the glamor of Havana; you are bound to find a familiar character or even family member, . . . particularly if you are from Jersey! When Buddy Holley, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper crashed in a snow-covered cornfield in Iowa on February 3, 1959, they became the final ingredient to launch the Bonaducci family into a trek every reader will cherish. Witness the battle between self-sacrifice and selfish lusts, as the kingdoms of modest middle class living and mob affiliation collide headon. Ten years in the making, Bad News on the Door Step is a labor of love that introduces Joseph Rocco Cervasio as a consumate storyteller, passionate about changing peoples lives for the better.

Book Fathers and Sons in Cinema

Download or read book Fathers and Sons in Cinema written by Gershon Reiter and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2008-06-02 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular American films are replete with story lines which involve the father-son relationship, often as the pivotal conflict or dragon which a hero must overcome to achieve success. Sometimes these conflicts are straightforward; other times they are projections of the central character's unconscious becoming conscious--in essence a modern form of myth. These American "filmmyths" serve as a visual means to project the psyche in an entertaining and easily accessible manner. Focusing on mythic structure, this volume explores 12 popular movies that deal with various aspects of the father-son relationship including the process of becoming a father, absent fathers, the rite of passage, and the turmoil between fathers and adolescents. Films examined include The Wizard of Oz, Back to the Future, Stand By Me, Red River, City Slickers, North by Northwest, E.T. the Extraterrestrial, Field of Dreams, Lone Star, The Lion King, Jurassic Park and The Searchers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As history's first democracy, classical Athens invited political discourse. The Athenians, however could not completely separate the politicals from the private sphere; indeed father-son conflict, from patricide to murdering one's son, was a major public as well as a private theme. In a fascinating historical reappraisal, the author explores the consequences, for Athens and us, of the powerful influence of familial ideology on politics.

Book Gangsters Guns Me Now I m in Eastenders but once I was on the run This is my true story

Download or read book Gangsters Guns Me Now I m in Eastenders but once I was on the run This is my true story written by Jamie Foreman and published by Kings Road Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-05 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamie Foreman is one of Britain's most iconic actors. He is also the son of Britain's most notorious gangster, Freddie Foreman. Jamie's life has been anything but ordinary. Right from the start, his world was one of contrast and contradiction: he grew up surrounded by London's criminal elite, living by their code of honour and respect, yet he himself was brought up to be a 'straight goer'. The backdrop of his home life was to differ greatly from his time at school as, at seven years old, Jamie found himself in the unlikely surroundings of a boarding school. The happiness of his family and school life was snatched from Jamie when his father was sentenced to ten years in prison for his involvement in the killing of Jack 'The Hat' McVitie. The subsequent years saw Jamie without the father he adored and the whole family was put under enormous strain. At 14, Jamie decided that his passion was for acting and, having been encouraged by Barbara Windsor, he discovered yet another new environment at the Italia Conti Stage School. Jamie thrived in the acting world and was soon enjoying success on both stage and screen. By the time of his dad's release from prison, Jamie had carved a 'straight' career for himself - but after years apart, there was plenty of lost time to make up for. Soon, he was dividing his time between acting and assisting with Freddie's 'business.' Before long, though, life took a surprising turn when a drug deal his father was heavily involved in went tragically wrong and he was forced to go on the run to America with his dad, which marked the start of a whole new adventure ... A truly fascinating story of a unique life. From being babysat by the Kray Twins to his life-changing meeting with Lawrence Olivier. Jamie's is a compelling tale of a boy becoming a man, of a father lost and found (and nearly lost again), and of the adventure, violence and tenderness that forged an unbreakable father-son relationship.
