Book excerpt: This volume will be of interest to everyone seeking to understand the relationship between war as an historical narrative and its representation in the arts and in culture, notably in literature, film, theatre and music. More specifically, it will be of the greatest interest to undergraduates, postgraduates, researchers and academics in a wide range of disciplines, including literary studies, film and drama studies, music, and history. • Author : Katheryn Wright
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing USA
  • Release : 2016-03-21

Download or read book The New Heroines written by Katheryn Wright and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the next generation of teen and young adult heroines in popular culture are creating a new feminist ideal for the 21st century. Representations of a teenage girl who is unique or special occur again and again in coming-of-age stories. It's an irresistible concept: the heroine who seems just like every other, but under the surface, she has the potential to change the world. This book examines the cultural significance of teen and young adult female characters—the New Heroines—in popular culture. The book addresses a wide range of examples primarily from the past two decades, with several chapters focusing on a specific heroic figure in popular culture. In addition, the author offers a comparative analysis between the "New Woman" figure from the late 19th and early 20th century and the New Heroine in the 21st century. Readers will understand how representations of teenage girls in fiction and nonfiction are positioned as heroic because of their ability to find out about themselves by connecting with other people, their environment, and technology.

Book Assimilating Asians

Download or read book Assimilating Asians written by Patricia P. Chu and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2000-03-29 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the central tasks of Asian American literature, argues Patricia P. Chu, has been to construct Asian American identities in the face of existing, and often contradictory, ideas about what it means to be an American. Chu examines the model of the Anglo-American bildungsroman and shows how Asian American writers have adapted it to express their troubled and unstable position in the United States. By aligning themselves with U.S. democratic ideals while also questioning the historical realities of exclusion, internment, and discrimination, Asian American authors, contends Chu, do two kinds of ideological work: they claim Americanness for Asian Americans, and they create accounts of Asian ethnicity that deploy their specific cultures and histories to challenge established notions of Americanness. Chu further demonstrates that Asian American male and female writers engage different strategies in the struggle to adapt, reflecting their particular, gender-based relationships to immigration, work, and cultural representation. While offering fresh perspectives on the well-known writings—both fiction and memoir—of Maxine Hong Kingston, Amy Tan, Bharati Mukherjee, Frank Chin, and David Mura, Assimilating Asians also provides new insight into the work of less recognized but nevertheless important writers like Carlos Bulosan, Edith Eaton, Younghill Kang, Milton Murayama, and John Okada. As she explores this expansive range of texts—published over the course of the last century by authors of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and Indian origin or descent—Chu is able to illuminate her argument by linking it to key historical and cultural events. Assimilating Asians makes an important contribution to the fields of Asian American, American, and women’s studies. Scholars of Asian American literature and culture, as well as of ethnicity and assimilation, will find particular interest and value in this book.

Book Building Learning Communities with Character

Download or read book Building Learning Communities with Character written by Bernard Novick and published by ASCD. This book was released on 2002 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's students need to learn more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic. They need to learn life skills to successfully manage tasks, form relationships, solve everyday problems, and adapt to the demands of simply growing up. To satisfy those needs, many educators seek effective and lasting programs for their students' academic, emotional, and social growth. This book presents a nine-step, problem-solving approach to help educators not only create such a program, but also shape the school climate to sustain and nurture it. Combining three decades of work with individual schools and districts, authors Bernard Novick, Jeffrey S. Kress, and Maurice J. Elias provide experienced insight to overcoming obstacles to social-emotional learning and character education programs. Their organized approach deals with the implementation process stage by stage, including: * Assessing your school's readiness for change * Setting goals for your program * Anticipating details and roadblocks * Obtaining feedback to modify your implemented program * Creating high standards for accomplishment in academics and character Any educator who is confused by the avalanche of different terminologies and methodologies surrounding social-emotional learning will benefit from this book. This practical and concise guide will help educators create an effective and goal-oriented environment in every school, one where students, staff, and parents are continually sustained in a caring community of learners.

Book excerpt: My mom always said you don’t get a second shot at making a first impression. I’ve remembered that my entire career. Especially since I’m one of the few black men who play professional hockey. I’m calculated and respectful in the way I speak to my coaches, the owners, and the media. I’ve never taken a risk… until her. I could blame it on the fact that for once I pushed away the pressure of my career for the ocean waves, the sand, and good times with my new teammates. But those are excuses because the minute I saw her at the airport, something lit up inside me and the best week of my life was spent with her in my bed. After our week in paradise, we said goodbye, exchanged phone numbers and both assumed that unless one of us was flying through the other’s city on the opposite side of the country, our vacation fling was over. Then one night after practice I see her. She’s here. In my city. Telling me she moved here for a job. If that’s not fate tell me what is. I’ve never wanted a second shot more than I do this time, but she’s determined to leave what we were on the island we left behind.
