After a disastrous but short-lived first marriage, Mason reconnects with Maika, whom he has never quite forgotten. They get married and, thirty-five years later, when she dies of cancer, he is so shaken by her death that he cannot begin the normal legal processes that are required when a loved one passes, nor can he think about closing his wife's estate, nor is he able to examine his financial situation. Instead, he flees to his cottage. But once he is there, he must clean up the mess left by the last renters. In the process, he meets old friends, and makes new acquaintances, but nothing he does can erase the memories that keep crowding back, of his wife and their life together. His most important encounter is with his long-estranged sister, who is going through her own crisis and appeals to him for help. And this forces him to think seriously about his financial affairs. Reluctantly, Maika had dealt with all their money matters, even though she had urged Mason to at least familiarize himself with their financial status. And now Mason doesn't know where he stands.

Their supposed author, Hermes Trismegistus, was thought to be a contemporary of Moses, and the Hermetic philosophy was regarded as an ancient theology, parallel to the received wisdom of the Bible. This first English translation based on reliable texts, together with Brian P. Copenhaver's comprehensive introduction, provide an indispensable resource to scholars in ancient philosophy and religion, early Christianity, Renaissance literature, and history, the history of science, and the occultist tradition in which the Hermetica have become canonical texts.

Book excerpt: What do the TV shows we’re watching tell us about ourselves? Television is the single most powerful and dynamic agent of change in India today. It is also the country’s most popular and accessible form of entertainment. Remote Control examines three kinds of programming—24x7 news, soap operas and reality shows—that have changed Indian television forever, and analyzes how these three genres, while drawing on different sources, are hybridized, indigenized and manage to ultimately project a distinctively Indian identity. Shoma Munshi’s book shows us how everyday reality in India in the twenty-first century shapes television; and how television, in turn, shapes us.

Book excerpt: Lite, Camera, Fiction' is compilation of the short anecdotes and stories that I have been publishing on Facebook for the last two years. I continue to write posts. But why 'Lite, Camera Fiction'? There are many reasons. Whenever I published a post on Facebook, I used to share a relevant song from YouTube. My aim was to demystify many complex issues using day-to-day examples and hence the title has the word 'Lite' and not 'Lights'. The issue of India, Pakistan and Kashmir is very complex. I have written many posts related to it. There is this song from 'Haqeeqat' ? 'Zara Si Aahat Hoti Hai?' Using this song as a trigger, I have tried to explain the plight of Kashmiris. This book covers a range of topics ? from politics, to spirituality, to religion, to human relationships, you name it and I have written about it. There is this song from 'Aandhi' ? 'Is Mod Par Aate Hai Kuch Susta Kadam Rasate Kuch Tez Kadam Raahe'. Using this song as an inspiration, I had written a post demystifying a complex subject like 'Spirituality'. I have published human-relationship-related stories like 'Abhimaan' ? how a small misunderstanding, inflated egos, etc. can destroy a relationship.

Book Life in the Himalaya

    Book Details:
  • Author : Maharaj K. Pandit
  • Publisher : Harvard University Press
  • Release : 2017-06-19
  • ISBN : 067497865X
  • Pages : 380 pages

Download or read book Life in the Himalaya written by Maharaj K. Pandit and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-19 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collision of the Indian and Eurasian plates around fifty million years ago profoundly altered earth’s geography and regional climates. The rise of the Himalaya led to intensification of the monsoon, the birth of massive glaciers and turbulent rivers, and an efflorescence of ecosystems along the most extreme elevational gradient on Earth. When the Ice Age ended, humans became part of this mix, and today nearly one quarter of the world’s population inhabits its river basins, from Afghanistan to Myanmar. Life in the Himalaya examines the region’s geophysical and biological systems and explores the past and future of human sustainability in the mountain’s shadow. Maharaj Pandit divides the Himalaya’s history into four phases. During the first, the mountain and its ecosystems formed. In the second, humans altered the landscape, beginning with nomadic pastoralism, continuing to commercial deforestation, and culminating in pockets of resistance to forest exploitation. The third phase saw a human population explosion, accompanied by road and dam building and other large-scale infrastructure that degraded ecosystems and caused species extinctions. Pandit outlines a future networking phase which holds the promise of sustainable living within the mountain’s carrying capacity. Today, the Himalaya is threatened by recurrent natural disasters and is at risk of catastrophic loss of life. If humans are to have a sustainable future there, Pandit argues, they will need to better understand the region’s geological vulnerability, ecological fragility, and sociocultural sensitivity. Life in the Himalaya outlines the mountain’s past in order to map a way forward.

Book The Dixon Cornbelt League

Download or read book The Dixon Cornbelt League written by W. P. Kinsella and published by Rosetta Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the author of Shoeless Joe—the basis for the film Field of Dreams—come baseball stories that define “a world in which magic and reality combine” (The New York Times). Shortstops who run with the wolves, painted eggs that reveal deeply disturbing meanings, long-dead Hall of Famers who miraculously return to the game, an Iowa minor-league town with a secret conspiracy: these are the elements from which W. P. Kinsella weaves nine fabulous stories about the magical world of baseball. From the dugouts, clubhouses, bedrooms, and barrooms to the interior worlds of hope and despair, these eerie stories present the absurdities of human relationships and reveal the writer’s special genius for touching the heart. “His short stories about baseball are wistful things of beauty which serve to remind us how the game should feel—the innate glory of a diamond etched in the minds of Americans.” —Calgary Sun “[Kinsella] uses baseball . . . as a familiar starting place for exploring, with pinpoint control, the human psyche.” —Booklist “Stories that read like lightning and tantalize the reader with fascinating scenarios.” —Publishers Weekly
