Download or read book Here They Come written by Yannick Murphy and published by Open Road + Grove/Atlantic. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I can imagine both Jane Austen and Raymond Carver pouring over this masterly novel” of a girl’s coming-of-age in 1970s New York (Frank McCourt). From the National Endowment for the Arts Award–winning author of the New York Times Notable Book, The Sea of Trees, comes the “shockingly funny” (Vanity Fair), “wholly unsentimental but peculiarly hopeful portrait of family love and growing up scarred but sturdy” (LA Weekly). Splitting time between her off-kilter family in a garbage-strewn apartment and a lonely hot dog vendor who trades Hershey bars for questionable favors, the pragmatic and absolutely fearless thirteen-year-old Smitty stands firmly grounded in a city that is stifling, violent, unpredictable, and full of life. It’s not easy to stay balanced. Not with two precocious sisters, a pothead brother, a depressed but steel-willed mother, an infirm grandmother, and an idler dad who’s vanished with his appallingly stupid mistress. Now, with dark humor, deadpan resilience, and a quiet sense of the surreal, Smitty recounts a remarkable chain of events that will make this the most transcendent year of her young life. In Here They Come, the PEN New England Award–winning Yannick Murphy “flawlessly captures a child’s-eye view of a battered society and a battered family” (Los Angeles Times), “creating a world as magical and harrowing as the struggle to come to grips with maturity” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

Download or read book Here Comes Everybody written by James Fearnley and published by Chicago Review Press. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Everything a really great music memoir should be.” —Colin Meloy The Pogues injected the fury of punk into Irish folk music and gave the world the troubled, iconic, darkly romantic songwriter Shane MacGowan. Here Comes Everybody is a memoir written by founding member and accordion player James Fearnley, drawn from his personal experiences and the series of journals and correspondence he kept throughout the band’s career. Fearnley describes the coalescence of a disparate collection of vagabonds living in the squats of London’s Kings Cross, with, at its center, the charismatic MacGowan and his idea of turning Irish traditional music on its head. With beauty, lyricism, and great candor, Fearnley tells the story of how the band watched helplessly as their singer descended into a dark and isolated world of drugs and drink, and sets forth the increasingly desperate measures they were forced to take. James Fearnley was born in 1954 in Worsley, Manchester. He played guitar in various bands, including The Nips with Shane MacGowan, before becoming the accordion player in The Pogues. Fearnley continues to tour with the band and lives in Los Angeles.

Book excerpt: Sixteen teachers and parents have documented, in words, illustrations and photographs, their revaluations and new understandings about how the preschool/Year 1 child thinks, and the learning strategies that each naturally applies. In this united documentary, the boundaries between school learning and home learning are broken down, and the school curriculum is understood as valuing and extending the same learning processes which the child began in the home during preschool age. Under particular revaluation are the traditional views of literacy and numeracy development, and the involvement of parents in school material.

Book excerpt: Julia is tormented by nightmares while she struggles to prepare for a first art exhibition with her husband, Tom. Sister Marchant persuades Julia to visit Annie, her dying mother. Mother and daughter have not been on speaking terms since Theo walked out. During the visit Sister asks Julia to consider allowing Christopher, her author brother, to interview her in an attempt to discover why Annie is desperately clinging to life. An extremely jealous side to Toms personality raises its ugly head when he discovers the first interview took place without a chaperone present. Convinced his wife is having an affair, Tom turns to drink and becomes abusive. Julia walks out and calls on Sister who gladly takes her in. Annie dies without resolving what troubled her. With her death the interviews cease. In desperation to complete a novel he has invested so much in, Christopher visits the Lands and Survey Department in Melbourne and discovers Theo purchased a piece of land two farms away from his original farm. On visiting Theo he learns the reason for Julias continuing nightmares. Because his two daughters were the victims of attempted murder, Theo hid his family in the primitive outback of Australia in a shack. What she hasnt realized is her German heritage turned many Australians against her family when they eventually learned of the great slaughter on the beaches of Gallipoli at the beginning of World War I. Christopher and Julia begin an affair, which results in her carrying his child. At Annies burial service a photographer from The Truth took a photo of a very pregnant Julia throwing a clod of earth on her mothers coffin. It made the front page with the question, WHO IS THE FATHER. To protect her son from forever being taunted as a bastard, Julia moves in with her father.

Download or read book Three Comrades written by Erich Maria Remarque and published by Random House. This book was released on 2013-12-17 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of All Quiet on the Western Front comes Three Comrades, a harrowing novel that follows a group of friends as they cope with upheaval in Germany between World Wars I and II. The year is 1928. On the outskirts of a large German city, three young men are earning a thin and precarious living. Fully armed young storm troopers swagger in the streets. Restlessness, poverty, and violence are everywhere. For these three, friendship is the only refuge from the chaos around them. Then the youngest of them falls in love, and brings into the group a young woman who will become a comrade as well, as they are all tested in ways they can have never imagined. Written with the same overwhelming simplicity and directness that made All Quiet on the Western Front a classic, Three Comrades portrays the greatness of the human spirit, manifested through characters who must find the inner resources to live in a world they did not make, but must endure. “The world has a great writer in Erich Maria Remarque. He is a craftsman of unquestionably first rank, a man who can bend language to his will. Whether he writes of men or of inanimate nature, his touch is sensitive, firm, and sure.”—The New York Times Book Review
