Book The Life of the Servant

Download or read book The Life of the Servant written by Heinrich Seuse and published by James Clarke & Co.. This book was released on 1952 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The Life of the Servant' is one of the world's greatest religious biographies. It is the work of a saint - one of that remarkable trio of 14th century German mystics, of whom the others were Eckhardt and Tauler - who was also a poet. The book was never intended for publication, and owes its preservation to an accident. What Suso confided to his 'spiritual daughter' was meant for her ears alone. In order to console a highly gifted woman in the acute sufferings that preceded her death he unfolded his own hidden life. The value of the book lies in its remarkable simplicity coupled with its unsurpassed poetic beauty.

Book Holiness and Masculinity in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Holiness and Masculinity in the Middle Ages written by P. H. Cullum and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies in gender in medieval culture have tended to focus on femininity, however the study of medieval masculinities has developed greatly over the last few years. Holiness and Masculinity in the Middle Ages is the first volume to concentrate on this specific aspect of medieval gender studies, and looks at the ways in which varieties of medieval masculinity intersected with concepts of holiness. Patricia Cullum and Katherine J. Lewis have collected an exceptional group of essays that explore differing notions of medieval holiness, understood variously as religious, saintly, sacred, pure, morally perfect, and consider topics such as significance of the tonsure, sanctity and martyrdom, eunuch saints, and the writings of Henry Suso. Holiness and Masculinity in the Middle Ages deals with a wide variety of texts and historical contexts, from Byzantium to Anglo-Saxon and late-medieval England.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "These studies . . . not only illuminate the past with a fierce and probing light but also raise, with nuance and power, fundamental issues of interpretation and method."—from the Foreword, by Caroline Walker Bynum Female saints, mystics, and visionaries have been much studied in recent years. Relatively little attention has been paid, however, to the ways in which their experiences and voices were mediated by the men who often composed their vitae, served as their editors and scribes, or otherwise encouraged, protected, and collaborated with the women in their writing projects. What strategies can be employed to discern and distinguish the voices of these high and late medieval women from those of their scribes and confessors? In those rare cases where we have both the women's own writings and writings about them by their male contemporaries, how do the women's self-portrayals diverge from the male portrayals of them? Finally, to what extent are these portrayals of sanctity by the saints and their contemporaries influenced not so much by gender as by genre? Catherine Mooney brings together a distinguished group of contributors who explore these and other issues as they relate to seven holy women and their male interpreters and one male saint who claims to incorporate the words of a female follower in an account of his own life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BLESSED HENRY SUSO COLLECTION [2 BOOKS] — Quality Formatting and Value — Active Index, Multiple Table of Contents for all Books — Multiple Illustrations Henry Suso, O.P. (also called Amandus, a name adopted in his writings, and Heinrich Seuse in German), was a German Dominican friar and the most popular vernacular writer of the fourteenth century (when considering the number of surviving manuscripts). An important author in both Latin and Middle High German, he is also notable for defending Meister Eckhart's legacy after Eckhart was posthumously condemned for heresy in 1329. He died in Ulm on 25 January 1366, and was beatified by the Catholic Church in 1831. Suso was born Heinrich von Berg, a member of the ruling family of Berg. He was born in either the Free imperial city of Überlingen on Lake Constance or nearby Constance, on 21 March 1295, and perhaps on that date up to 1297. Later, out of humility and devotion to his mother, he took her family name, which was Sus (or Süs). At 13 years of age he was admitted to the novitiate of the Dominican Order at their priory in Constance. After completing that year of probation, he advanced to do his preparatory, philosophical, and theological studies there. —BOOKS— A LITTLE BOOK OF ETERNAL WISDOM THE LIFE OF BLESSED HENRY SUSO PUBLISHER: AETERNA PRESS

Book The Life of Blessed Henry Suso

Download or read book The Life of Blessed Henry Suso written by Blessed Henry Suso and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on 2013-01-19 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE following book speaks throughout in an instructive manner of the life of a beginner, and contains, for those who look beneath the surface, information respecting the proper way in which a beginner should order his outer and inner man so as to be in harmony with God’s all-lovely will. And since good works are undoubtedly a better guide, and sometimes shed a brighter light into a man’s heart than mere words, therefore the book recounts, as examples, many different holy actions, which really and truly took place just as they are related. The book also tells of a man’s progress in holiness; that is, how, by avoiding things, by sufferings, and by exercises, he may break through his unmortified animal nature, and arrive at great and exalted dignity. Book excerpt: A fascinating collaboration between a medieval historian and a professor of psychiatry, this enthralling book applies modern biological and psychological research findings to the lives of medieval mystics and ascetics. Drawing upon a database of over 1,400 medieval holy persons and in-depth studies of individual saints, this illuminating study examines the relationship between medieval mystical experiences, the religious practices of mortification; laceration of the flesh, sleep deprivation and extreme starvation, and how these actions produced altered states of consciousness and brain function in the heroic ascetics. Examining and disputing much contemporary writing about the political and gender motivations in the medieval quest for a closeness with God, this is essential reading for anyone with an interest in medieval religion or the effects of self-injurious behaviour on the mind.

Book The Visual and the Visionary

Download or read book The Visual and the Visionary written by Jeffrey F. Hamburger and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-12 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bew interpretation of the role of the visual arts in the spiritual lives of women in late medieval monastic communities. The Visual and the Visionary adds a new dimension to the study of female spirituality, with its nuanced account of the changing roles of images in medieval monasticism from the twelfth century to the Reformation. In nine essays embracing the histories of art, religion, and literature, Jeffrey Hamburger explores the interrelationships between the visual arts and female spirituality in the context of the cura monialium, the pastoral care of nuns. Used as instruments of instruction and inspiration, images occupied a central place in debates over devotional practice, monastic reform, and mystical expression. Far from supplementing a history of art from which they have been excluded, the images made by and for women shaped that history decisively by defining novel modes of religious expression, above all, the relationship between sight and subjectivity. With this book, the study of female piety and artistic patronage becomes an integral part of the general history of medieval art and spirituality.
