Says this letter will not be long because there is a ship in port that is just about to leave for Liverpool and this note needs to be on it. Says they are all well and situated comfortably near the city at Bush Hill, Vice President John Adams's house. Adams was away at Braintree, Massachusetts, so the house was available. Reports he is going into a good house in Philadelphia in the autumn. Is surprised that William is living in a strange Country without a Guinea. Says he has not paid Shaw and Randall, but he will. Will not draw upon Webber. Tells him not to worry, If you cannot sell the lands ... why you must not starve. Says that Mr. Morris has sold the lands which he bought of Gorham and Phelps. Makes references to 120,000 acres around Lake Ontario called the Yenesee Lands. Has heard that Gouverneur Morris has neglected the St. Lawrence Lands. Relates that the consular bill was put before the Senate on the last day of the session. Says it will be taken up again next session. Says that Thomas Jefferson has been absent, but he will communicate with him on the subject. Says George Washington has been absent or in the Southern states since 23 March. Has returned in good health to Mount Vernon though. Washington will be back in Philadelphia next month. Says his wife is expecting a baby on 25 July. Tells him to keep his spirits up and to keep writing even though he is a bad correspondent. Claims We have a force of about 3000 men going against the Indians. Says that unless they make peace they will need to be punished.

The letter was passed to St. John by George Washington and was accompanied by other papers discussing affairs of the Society of the Cincinnati (William does not include the other papers mentioned). Discusses financial transactions he apparently conducted on Knox's behalf, including payment of a reward for capturing a deserter from Lieutenant Kersey's troops (see GLC02437.03960). Transmits news of the Constitution and projected location of Congress: Congress have undone yesterday all they had heretofore done with respect the Ordinance, and nothing today has been transacted on the business so that where they will next meet is uncertain. North Carolina has rejected the Constitution by a great Majority.

Recently received news that the French captured the island of Dominica, which Knox refers to as Dominico. Also reports that France sent 4,000 men to take Jamaica. Comments that the British have taken cattle and forage in New Jersey, and surprised [Colonel George] Baylor's regiment, wounding Baylor (this battle is referred to as the Baylor Massacre, 28 September 1778). Writes, But should the Enemy contrary to my reasonings, conjectures & conclusions be so insane as to push to Boston, you may rely I shall give you the earliest notice- But rest easy on this head. Discusses a business matter handled by William related to Henry's mortgage and estate. Also mentions an unspecified petition. Contains several notes written in a different hand throughout text. Minor text loss from seal. Mentions that Lucy and her baby, possibly their daughter Lucy, are both well. On page four, Knox reports that General Benjamin Lincoln will soon take command in Charleston South Carolina.

Notes humanity recoils at the Idea of the distress which the poor families must sustain by the loss of their husbands, fathers, or brothers in that tremendous catastrophe (the General Arnold, a ship, crashed on a sandbar outside of Plymouth, Massachusetts in December 1778). Knox had some investment in the ship, noting his relief that savings from the wreck will pay all expenses. Discusses British ships and the high price of goods in Philadelphia. Instructs William to pay Mr. French a sum owed by Knox. Comments on Betsey and Sally Winslow, who are staying in Pluckemin. Remarks, You will see in the papers some... charges against Genl [Benedict] Arnold by the State of Pennsylvania- I shall be exceedingly mistaken if one of them can be proven- he has returned to Philadelphia and will I hope be able to vindicate himself from the aspersion of his enemies.

Mentions that the army was stricken with smallpox and General John Thomas was likely to die from it. Chastises William for not writing more often and keeping him updated on activities in Boston. Later that month, British forces in Canada were reinforced and the Americans were forced to retreat. Thomas had died from smallpox on 2 June 1776. This letter to William was sent to Peter Knox, who evidently forwarded it to William Knox.
