The word is that Governor Bowdoin's estate is worth 60,000. Describes in detail how Bowdoin's estate is to be divided. Bowdoin left 400 to the College.

Tells Knox that he has spoken with the ailing Governor [James] Bowdoin respecting the Fish, and we have concluded to put on board the first Vessell bound to Philadelphia. Bowdoin died at 4 o'clock that morning. He had his reason to the last moment. Bowdoin's property left to Mrs. Temple will be put into the hands of the Trustees, and the income only at her command during the life her husband but if she outlives him, it comes into their hands and at her own disposal. Notes he had a visit from Mr. [Sylvanus?] Bourne, but Jackson had no directions from Knox pertaining to their business. Reports Judge [Chief Justice John] Jay is here... He is most respected & esteemed, and is taken every particular notice of - his speech to the Grand Jury was much admired. Says he was appointed foreman on a jury with Judge Jay. Tells of an attempt to raise a Balloon thirty feet distance from the Common. The failed attempt you will observe it was on the 5th of November (Guy Fawkes Day). Asks about an appointment for a friend.

Jackson and others in Boston had received word of a coach accident that severely injured Mrs. Knox and some of their children. To the astonishment of every body, Governor Bowdoin is yet living, Jackson reports, for a week past every moment was supposed to be his last. Bowdoin is a good and valuable man, and his death will be much lamented by his family and the public at large. Jackson comments on the performance of Knox's horse, Boston, saying that Knox will not regret buying the horse. Lists items he is sending to Knox with Captain Barnard including cranberries for Mrs. Knox. Jackson remarks that he has heard nothing further respecting the Fish, and I think it will not do for me to make the first advances on that head.

Notes, for my own part I dislike leaving with [the] papers. Notes that General Webb and Doctor Andrew [Craigie] are both at Boston, and are engaged in financial speculation. Gives the details of the wedding of Lucy's friend Charlotte.

Relates that his note to Tudor was due 17 March. Reports that [Thomas?] Adams the printer informed him that the article in a North Carolina newspaper Knox was asking about was inclosed to him by a Gentleman from Pensylvania. Adams would not give the gentleman's name, nor confirm it came from Philadelphia. Jackson believes he can find out the name if Knox wishes to know. Refers Knox to William Bingham's letter about their land concern. Wants to go to Maine with Knox, and reminds him they are embarking from Portland now as a packet now runs regularly between there and Boston. Says I am anxious for your present situation but hope & pray for the best, you will let me know when all danger is over, that my mind may be releived from its present fears & apprehensions. Says he intends to visit a Public Exhibition of the Students at the Hingham Academy. Will see Henry Jackson Knox there who Henry Jackson refers to as my boy. Reports that the boy needs steadiness, but that he has improved upon his language, manners & deportment. Speaks highly of the boy and hopes he will continue where he is until he enters Harvard. Is very much against the boy going home for the summer. Continues letter on 1 April. Encloses correspondence he has had with Judge Sullivan. This will show Knox the situation they are in since they have not made the [Dollar sign]30,000 payment as their contract stipulates. Hopes Knox will consult Bingham on the subject. Reminds him the [Dollar sign]5,200 note is due 29 April.

Says he has been informed that Jackson has ignored Knox's warning and has not attended to his accounting with the rigidness that is required; therefore, he cannot say whether Jackson will receive any relief from Massachusetts. But he believes something will be granted by the Board of Treasury. Instructs Jackson to sell all of Knox's Massachusetts securities and invest in land speculation in New York. Does not believe there will be any significant rise in the value of his securities and therefore chooses to sell. States he would not have sold at present if it were not for the rare opportunity of purchasing the land and Knox's current ability of obtaining the needed cash. Believes his will double his profits within seven years.

Describes how many men he has thus far recruited, and mentions that Mr. [Stephen] Bruce has advanced supplies to him. Sends love to Lucy Knox and the children. Document has significant water damage throughout including the signature.
