Very few persons, however, have tried to obtain a more intimate knowledge of this remarkable character. Yet, besides the importance of his voyages, his career offers a great and unique moral interest. More than any other man Hudson has identified himself with one sole idea, in the service of which he laboured with matchless heroism. All these valiant efforts were in vain, and led him to a frightful martyrdom. And yet he owes to these same fruitless achievements a justly-earned renown, greater than that at which he aimed. Hudson's one idea, to discover a short route to Asia by the North, was not of Hudson's creation. It owed, in various shapes, its origin to that great and all but unknown man, Sebastian Cabot, the discoverer of the mainland of America, and the founder of England's maritime power. A large amount of glorious enterprise had already, in 1607, been produced by his plans; and by the voyages his ideas gave rise to the names of John and Sebastian Cabot, of Cortereal, Verazzano, Gomez, Davis, Willoughby, Chancellor, Barents, Heemskerk, Linschoten, and many others of minor note, had become historical. All these labours, however, and those of Hudson's like them, were doomed to be fruitless as regarded their main purpose, for their object is beyond the reach of man. All the short northern routes to Asia are blocked up by permanent icefields, and can therefore never become practicable for ships. Yet, in spite of their fruitlessness, these bold ventures belong to the most important events that history records. The commemoration, both in America and in the Netherlands, of the 300th anniversary of Hudson's third voyage, has once more drawn general attention to the details of that exploit and consequently to this work, wherein, in a manner at once clear and complete, the notices and preparations for the expedition were set forth, accompanied by important documents then first brought to light. Since, however, the issue was limited to a small number of copies, "for private distribution," the book became very scarce and remained almost unknown even to those who made a special study of the subject. Asher, in the Introduction to his valuable and well documented monograph Henry Hudson the Navigator, 1860, complains of not having been able to secure a copy of Murphy's treatise, and his work therefore lacks some of the very important data of which that treatise makes earliest mention. On the other hand, Murphy has contented himself with giving the English translation of some of the more important documents without supplying the original text, whilst his bibliography is not altogether satisfactory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where Hudson's Voyage Ended, an Inquiry: Cohoes, and the Origin of the Name In this year of our Lord 1909, we hear much about the "Hudson-Fulton Celebration" from writers who fill us with historic lore concerning the lower reaches of the Hudson, Manhattan Island, New Amsterdam and the building by Holland and the reception in New York of a replica of De Halve Maene; and back in our earliest school histories we learned about the entrance into New York harbor, three hundred years ago, of the wonderful little yacht commanded by Henry Hudson, and his memorable cruise up the River of the Mountains, and later we have enjoyed Clerk Juet's diary of every morning whether it were "faire weather" or "mystie, untill the sunne arose." And when he "sayled twelve leagues," and had five fathoms, with the "river full of fish," our ecstacy was unbounded. But, "At five of the clocke in the afternoone," When "the wind came to south southwest. So wee made a boord or two, and anchored." we began to feel suspicious; for the phraseology and the rhythm were so like a fragment of one of Dibdin's sea songs that it began to dawn upon us that we were being fed salt-water literature to the exclusion of historical facts relating to the furthest point north on the Hudson where at least five of the crew of the Half Moon, if not all, were privileged to land.
