Book Henry Fuseli 82 Paintings in Close Up

Download or read book Henry Fuseli 82 Paintings in Close Up written by Margarita Esters and published by Osmora Incorporated. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Fuseli (1741 – 1825) was a Swiss painter, draughtsman, and writer on art, who worked and spent most of his life in Britain. As a painter, Fuseli favored the supernatural. He pitched everything on an ideal scale, believing a certain amount of exaggeration necessary in the higher branches of historical painting. In this theory he was confirmed by the study of Michelangelo's works and the marble statues of the Monte Cavallo, which, when at Rome, he liked to contemplate in the evening, relieved against a murky sky or illuminated by lightning. The violent and intemperate action which he often displays, in the conventional wisdom, destroys the grand effect of many of his pieces. Fuseli painted more than 200 pictures, but he exhibited only a small number of them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Pop examines how art of the mid 1700s and early 1800s - inspired by translations of Greek tragedy - reveals a view of modern Europe attempting to recognize its own historical status as one culture among many. He analyses this broad view of culture through the lens of Anglo-Swiss artist Henry Fuseli's life and work.

Book Landscape Architecture A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Landscape Architecture A Very Short Introduction written by Ian Thompson and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landscape architecture plays an important role in shaping the places in which we live and work. But what is it? Landscape architects are involved, amongst other things, in the layout of business parks, the reclamation of derelict industrial sites, the restoration of historic city parks, and the siting and design of major pieces of infrastructure such as motorways, dams, power stations, and flood defences, as well as the planning of parks and gardens. Taking a historical perspective, Ian Thompson looks at both the roots of landscape architecture and the people that established it. This Very Short Introduction explores some of the misconceptions about landscape architecture and considers the discipline's origins in landscape gardening. Thompson takes a look at a number of areas, including the influence of Modernism, the difference between landscape design and landscape planning, and the way that planning legislation has driven the growth of the discipline. He also explores contemporary environmentalism, the debate as to whether landscape architecture is an art or a science, landscape architecture in the community, post-industrial projects, and its relationship with ecological urbanism. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly.
