Book Henry Dared to Live

Download or read book Henry Dared to Live written by Henry J. Seiler and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry J. Seiler was an energetic eleven year old who excelled at wrestling, and while he may have felt indestructible, he learned how fragile life was on a spring day in 1975 when he climbed on the back of a friend's motorcycle. Minutes later, he was lying in a crumpled heap and being rushed to a hospital in nearby Des Moines, Iowa, where he spent forty-five days in a coma. Doctors told his family and friends that they didn't expect him to live. But Henry--even in his comatose state--thought otherwise, and he dared to live. With the same strong-willed determination he exhibited as a wrestler, he awakened from his coma and fought to overcome his physical challenges. Henry encourages us to handle life as it comes, working through every day as if it were any other day. Abiding by his motto, "I know where I am going, and I know what it takes to get there," was his key to success. No matter what challenges you're facing--even if you're flat on your back and staring at the ceiling tiles--you can find the will to succeed and come out a winner by learning from Henry.

Book Aaron Henry of Mississippi

Download or read book Aaron Henry of Mississippi written by Minion K. C. Morrison and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 2015-06-05 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2016 Lillian Smith Book Award When Aaron Henry returned home to Mississippi from World War II service in 1946, he was part of wave of black servicemen who challenged the racial status quo. He became a pharmacist through the GI Bill, and as a prominent citizen, he organized a hometown chapter of the NAACP and relatively quickly became leader of the state chapter. From that launching pad he joined and helped lead an ensemble of activists who fundamentally challenged the system of segregation and the almost total exclusion of African Americans from the political structure. These efforts were most clearly evident in his leadership of the integrated Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party delegation, which, after an unsuccessful effort to unseat the lily-white Democratic delegation at the Democratic National Convention in 1964, won recognition from the national party in 1968. The man who the New York Times described as being “at the forefront of every significant boycott, sit-in, protest march, rally, voter registration drive and court case” eventually became a rare example of a social-movement leader who successfully moved into political office. Aaron Henry of Mississippi covers the life of this remarkable leader, from his humble beginnings in a sharecropping family to his election to the Mississippi house of representatives in 1979, all the while maintaining the social-change ideology that prompted him to improve his native state, and thereby the nation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly ten years, Judge Glenda Hatchett has delighted TV audiences with a brand of justice that turns the everyday into something eminently watchable. Her message can be distilled into the following two words: Dare Yourself. Whatever obstacles or fears one faces, Judge Hatchett's prescription implores readers to write their own story in this life. With care and conviction, Judge Hatchett uses real life stories from the courtroom and her personal life to counsel readers. Shows them how to find their true purpose and gifts, to be real about their reality and its potential outside of challenging circumstances, and to always be true to themselves. Interactive as well as inspirational, DARE TO TAKE CHARGE challenges the reader to ask self-reflective questions that lead to moments of self-discovery and a defined pathway to healing. Daring her audience to study the positive with the same interest and intensity that they study the negative, Judge Hatchett uncovers the potential for grace and success in lives that are now punctuated with despair and unfaithfulness.

Book You Gotta Stand Up

Download or read book You Gotta Stand Up written by Chris Drake and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-03-26 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If it’s true that we’re known by the company we keep, then Texas humorist, First Amendment Advocate, “Hee Haw’s homespun philosopher, and 1950s media blacklist buster, John Henry Faulk’s character was first quality. His story intersects some of America’s best and brightest: Eugene Victor Debs, the “Texas Triumvirate,” Edward R. Murrow, Mark Goodson, Louis Nizer, Myrna Loy, Eleanor Roosevelt, Joe Papp, and host of others. Consciously risking a lucrative television career, he seized “the buzzards of repression” during the McCarthy era, and “rung their sorry necks.” However, living up to his father’s admonition to “do something for the people,” he kissed his big time media career goodbye, and people still ask what made him do what he did. Perhaps this biography will help explain. John Henry Faulk’s reputation runs an extraordinary gamut from blue collared everymen who wonder why a man throws away a future on television and millions of dollars, to intellectuals who couldn’t imagine why a groundbreaking folklorist with his gifts, skills, and reputation would associate himself with such lowbrow entertainments as “Hee Haw.” Permanently identified by his precedent breaking lawsuit as, “the man who broke the blacklist,” John Henry spent a life baffling those who tried to pigeonhole him.
