Book Henry Agard Wallace the Iowa Corn Yield Tests and the Adoption of Hybrid Corn

Download or read book Henry Agard Wallace the Iowa Corn Yield Tests and the Adoption of Hybrid Corn written by Richard C. Sutch and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research report makes the following claims: 1] There was not an unambiguous economic advantage of hybrid corn over the open-pollinated varieties in 1936. 2] The early adoption of hybrid corn before 1937 can be better explained by a sustained propaganda campaign conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture at the direction of the Secretary of Agriculture, Henry Agard Wallace. The Department's campaign echoed that of the commercial seed companies. The most prominent hybrid seed company, Pioneer Hi-Bred Company, was founded by Wallace and he retained a financial interest while serving as Secretary. 3] The early adopters of hybrid seed were followed by later adopters as a consequence of the droughts of 1934 and especially 1936. The eventual improvement of yields as newer varieties were introduced explains the continuation and acceleration of the process.

Book excerpt: "A windbreak, as we generally think of it in Iowa, is a narrow belt of trees planted to give the farmstead protection against winter winds. Much of Iowa's land is relatively level to gently rolling. there is little native timber except along rivers and streams. This combination permits northwesterly winter winds to make a clean sweep across th eland. Something is needed to break their force." -- p. [921]

Book The 1947 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1947 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Joseph Lee Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1948 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Iowa Corn Yield Test is conducted annually to provide impartial comparable performance records on a relatively large number of hybrid combinations. Each hybrid tested is ranked by a performance score based on held, dry matter content of grain, lodging resistance and the percentage of ears held on the stalks. In view of the present world food need, it is important that farmers plant hybrids adapted to their particular locality. The information presented gives a reliable estimate of the relative performance of a considerable number of hybrids when grown in different areas of Iowa." -- p. [865]

Book The 1952 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1952 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Charles D. Hutchcroft and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This bulletin reports the results of the 1952 Iowa Corn Yield Test in which the performance of 219 different corn hybrids was compared. The state was divided into four sections, each of which was subdivided into three districts. A test field was planted in each district. Each hybrid entry was tested in all three districts of a section. The map shows how we divided the state into sections and districts and the approximate location of the farm where the hybrids were compared. Any producer of hybrid corn seed was eligible to enter his corn in the test. The widely grown hybrids in each section also were entered by the Iowa Crop Improvement Association. In the back of the bulletin you will find an index listing hybrids tested in 1952. The index also indicates whether the hybrid is a single, three-way, double or multiple cross." -- p. [858]

Book The 1944 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1944 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Francis Reiss and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Each year the Iowa Farmer has a multitude of corn hybrids from which he can choose seed for planting. Some are well established strains of proven worth while others are new and relatively untried. It is impossible to determine, from the appearance of the seed in the bag, the desirability of any particular hybrid. The real test of its value is determined by planting it along with other hybrids to check its field performance. The Iowa Corn Yield test attempts to provide comparable performance records on a number of hybrids. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin should afford a reliable comparison of the relative performance of various hybrids when grown in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height, dropped ears and damaged corn. A performance score has been used in evaluating the relative agronomic value of the various hybrids tested." -- p. [473]

Book excerpt: "The Concord grape and grapes of this type and hardiness which are the grapes most widely grown in Iowa, require yearly pruning if the grower wishes to obtain heavy annual yields of large-sized, high quality fruit. The illustration on the cover of this bulletin indicates the development and distribution of the fruit which may be expected on correctly pruned vines." -- p. [227]

Book excerpt: "The Iowa Corn Yield Test attempts to make available an impartial evaluation of various hybrid combinations in respect to yielding ability, lodging resistance, maturity and other agronomic characteristics. It is believed that the information presented in this bulletin may be of value to both the purchaser and the producer of hybrid corn seed, showing as it does the relative performance of various hybrids in different parts of the state. Data are presented on each entry for yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, dropped ears, ear height and damaged corn. A performance score has been used as a means of evaluating relative agronomic value of the different hybrids." -- Purpose, p. [853]

Book The 1950 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1950 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Charles D. Hutchcroft and published by . This book was released on 1951 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This bulletin reports the results of the 1950 Iowa Corn Yield test to compare the performance of many hybrid corn varieties. The state was divided into four sections, each of which was subdivided into three districts. A test field was located in each district. Each of the 307 entries tested in 1950 was planted in all three districts of a section. Fields in districts 2 and 3 were not harvested because of poor stands. You will find a map in the bulletin showing the division of the state into sections and districts and approximate location of the farms where the hybrids were compared. Any producer of hybrid corn seed was eligible to make entry in the test. Ten widely grown hybrids in each section also were entered by the Iowa Corn and Small Grain Growers Association. In the back of the bulletin you will find an index listing the hybrids tested in 1950. The index also lists the table numbers where the performance record f each entry is shown and indicates whether the hybrid is a single, three-way, double or multiple cross." -- foreword, p. [690]

Book The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test

Download or read book The 1953 Iowa Corn Yield Test written by Joseph Lee Robinson and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In 1953 we tested 229 corn hybrids in the Iowa Corn Yield test. Each hybrid was tested at a minimum of three locations. The division of the state into districts and sections is shown on the map. Seven characteristics of each hybrid were recorded and summarized. These included yield, stand, moisture, root and stalk lodging, ear height and dropped ears. Each hybrid was ranked by a performance score based on yield, moisture and resistance to lodging and dropped ears. You will find records in the tables showing how each hybrid performed for the above characteristics. An index listing the hybrids tested in 1953 is given in the back of this bulletin. A majority of the entries in the test were made by commercial hybrid corn companies. The Iowa Crop Improvement Association also entered 10 widely grown hybrids in each section as determined by a survey of farmers. The purpose of the Iowa Corn Yield Test is to determine the performance of hybrids. It is not a contest and should not be confused with the 5-acre Iowa Master Corn Growers Contest." -- Foreword, p.
