Download or read book Helpful Visions The Faith Promoting Series Book 14 written by George Q. Cannon and published by Zion's Camp Books. This book was released on with total page 117 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the 14th book in the Faith-Promoting Series, a collection of books written with young Latter-day Saints in mind. The stories contained in each volume are designed to be exciting to read, teach important gospel principles, and most importantly bring the reader closer to the Savior and show the Hand of God in the everyday lives of everyday Saints. This volume includes experiences from Orson F. Whitney, Briant Stevens, and Thomas A. Shreeve. Whitney was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, a notable writer of both fiction and non-fiction. He was assistant Church historian, as well as a teacher at BYU. Briant Stevens died not long after being ordained an Elder, but his shining example in the face of trials and suffering is inspiring. He was a true example of a normal member of the Church accomplishing extraordinary things with the help of Heavenly Father. Thomas A. Shreeve was born in England and joined the church there in 1864. Five years later he moved to Ogden, Utah, arriving on the second immigrant train to reach the Salt Lake Valley. In 1878 he was called on a mission to Australia, and served his mission in New Zealand. He organized the New Zealand mission and was witness to many miracles during that time. He was later ordained a patriarch in his home stake in Ogden.

Book A Conflict of Visions

Download or read book A Conflict of Visions written by Thomas Sowell and published by Basic Books. This book was released on 2007-06-05 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Sowell’s “extraordinary” explication of the competing visions of human nature lie at the heart of our political conflicts (New York Times) Controversies in politics arise from many sources, but the conflicts that endure for generations or centuries show a remarkably consistent pattern. In this classic work, Thomas Sowell analyzes this pattern. He describes the two competing visions that shape our debates about the nature of reason, justice, equality, and power: the "constrained" vision, which sees human nature as unchanging and selfish, and the "unconstrained" vision, in which human nature is malleable and perfectible. A Conflict of Visions offers a convincing case that ethical and policy disputes circle around the disparity between both outlooks.

Book Visions Trips and Crowded Rooms

Download or read book Visions Trips and Crowded Rooms written by David Kessler and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2011-05-01 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Kessler, one of the most renowned experts on death and grief, takes on three uniquely shared experiences that challenge our ability to explain and fully understand the mystery of our final days. The first is "visions." As the dying lose sight of this world, some people appear to be looking into the world to come. The second shared experience is getting ready for a "trip." The phenomenon of preparing oneself for a journey isn’t new or unusual. In fact, during our loved ones’ last hours, they may often think of their impending death as a transition or journey. These trips may seem to us to be all about leaving, but for the dying, they may be more about arriving. Finally, the third phenomenon is "crowded rooms." The dying often talk about seeing a room full of people, as they constantly repeat the word crowded. In truth, we never die alone. Just as loving hands greeted us when we were born, so will loving arms embrace us when we die. In the tapestry of life and death, we may begin to see connections to the past that we missed in life. While death may look like a loss to the living, the last hours of a dying person may be filled with fullness rather than emptiness. In this fascinating book, which includes a new Afterword, Kessler brings us stunning stories from the bedsides of the dying that will educate, enlighten, and comfort us all.

Book Visions of a Better World

Download or read book Visions of a Better World written by Quinton Dixie and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2011-08-30 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1935, at the height of his powers, Howard Thurman, one of the most influential African American religious thinkers of the twentieth century, took a pivotal trip to India that would forever change him—and that would ultimately shape the course of the civil rights movement in the United States. When Thurman (1899–1981) became the first African American to meet with Mahatma Gandhi, he found himself called upon to create a new version of American Christianity, one that eschewed self-imposed racial and religious boundaries, and equipped itself to confront the enormous social injustices that plagued the United States during this period. Gandhi’s philosophy and practice of satyagraha, or “soul force,” would have a momentous impact on Thurman, showing him the effectiveness of nonviolent resistance. After the journey to India, Thurman’s distinctly American translation of satyagraha into a Black Christian context became one of the key inspirations for the civil rights movement, fulfilling Gandhi’s prescient words that “it may be through the Negroes that the unadulterated message of nonviolence will be delivered to the world.” Thurman went on to found one of the first explicitly interracial congregations in the United States and to deeply influence an entire generation of black ministers—among them Martin Luther King Jr. Visions of a Better World depicts a visionary leader at a transformative moment in his life. Drawing from previously untapped archival material and obscurely published works, Quinton Dixie and Peter Eisenstadt explore, for the first time, Thurman’s development into a towering theologian who would profoundly affect American Christianity—and American history.
