Book Hell is a Nice Island in the Middle of the Sea

Download or read book Hell is a Nice Island in the Middle of the Sea written by Elias Hasapi and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2023-11-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the toughest and most ruthless novels ever written about Ibiza. January 2002 was a crucial date in the history of Ibiza. In that year, the Spanish currency, the peseta, was replaced by the euro. For months, even years, the island's businesses had to retrieve the undeclared income they had buried in the ground during years to escape taxation and exchange it for the new currency. Billions of pesetas were converted to euros, and once laundered, in many cases, reburied. Also in that year, new synthetic drugs began to gain popularity, indirectly supported by the major clubs. Unlike classic drugs like heroin, the new pills kept customers awake, allowing the clubs to remain open almost 24 hours a day, generating incredible profits. After-hours venues emerged, and morning and afternoon sessions at beach clubs and hotels also made a comeback. DJs became superstars without any knowledge of music and, what's worst, audience knew it but didn't mind it. With the help of chemistry, visitors could, if they wished, party non-stop for 24 hours. The clubs subtly supported those new drugs, regardless of the consequences they would have on their clientele. To make matters worse, the Spanish tax authorities set their sights on this bottomless source of money, not for what it earned, but for what was underreported. Come and read the most unkown history of Ibiza, the one nobody will tell you ever. It's fun...or not.

Four crack special forces units are dropped in. One of them is a team of Marines, led by Captain Shane Schofield, call-sign: SCARECROW. Nothing can prepare Schofield's team for what they find there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is three weeks since the boy came to town, carrying a book of poetry to return to the old sea captain-the poetry Bárour died for. Three weeks, but already Bárour's ghost has faded. Snow falls so heavily that it binds heaven and earth together. As the villagers gather in the inn to drink schnapps and coffee while the boy reads to them from Hamlet, Jens the postman stumbles in half-dead, having almost frozen to his horse. On his next journey to the fjords Jens is accompanied by the boy, and both must risk their lives for each other, and for an unusual item of mail. The Sorrow of Angels is a timeless and powerful story that evokes the struggle of man against the ferocious majesty of nature. Asked by The Independent what inspired him to write these three novels, Stefánsson named his first visit to the landscape of Iceland's West Fjords. "It was like a punch in the solar plexus . . . The mountains seemed to be saying, 'Why aren't you writing about us?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part history and part memoir, Hell Gate tells of a man's excursions along and through Hell Gate, a narrow stretch of water in New York City's East River, notorious for dangerous currents, shipwrecks, and its melancholic islands and rocks. Drawn to the area by his fascination with its name—from the Dutch Hellegat, translated into English as both "bright passage" and "hellhole"—what begins as a set of casual walks for Michael Nichols becomes an exploration of landscape and history as he traces these idyllic and hellish images in an attempt to discover Hell Gate's hidden character and the meaning of its elusive name. Using a loosely constructed set of sketches organized as a kind of tour along the edge of the river and then from a rowboat in the river, Nichols describes scenes and events as they present themselves, mixing history and lore with contemporary scenes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From August 1942 until February 1943, two armies faced each other amid the malarial jungles and blistering heat of Guadalcanal Island. The Imperial Japanese forces needed to protect and maintain the air base that gave them the ability to interdict enemy supply routes. The Allies were desperate to halt the advance of a foe that so far had inflicted crippling losses on the U.S. fleet at Pearl Harbor, then seized the Philippines, Wake Island, the Dutch East Indies, Guam, and other Allied territory. After months of relentless battle, the U.S. troops forced back the determined Japanese, providing what many historians believe was the decisive turning point in the Pacific theater of operations. Stanley Coleman Jersey, a medical air evacuation specialist in the South Pacific during World War II, has spent countless hours combing Australian, Japanese, and U.S. documents and interviewing more than 200 veterans of the Guadalcanal campaign, both Allied and Japanese. Beginning with the events that preceded the battle for Guadalcanal during the Australian defense of the southern Solomon Islands in late 1941, Jersey details the military preparations made in response to intelligence describing the creation of an enemy air base within striking distance of American supply lines and recounts the civilian evacuation that followed the Japanese arrival in New Guinea. With the stage set, he turns to the campaign itself, with particular emphasis on the combat during the critical period of August to December 1942. While Guadalcanal is his primary focus, Jersey also covers the roles played by forces occupying the other Solomon Islands, including the plight of construction laborers, air crews, and ground units. This book, chock-full of gripping battlefield accounts and harrowing first-person narratives, draws together for the first time Allied and Japanese perspectives on the bloody contest. It is certain to become an indispensable asset to historians of World War II.
