Book Helicopter type Rotor Decelerators

Download or read book Helicopter type Rotor Decelerators written by R. R. Tyndall and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helicoptr-type rotors appear attractive for the deceleration, trajectory control, gliding descent and final recovery of almost all types of aero space payloads. The potential of rotors is based upon (1) their inherent virtues of L/D gliding capability, controllability, and soft, flared landing; (2) past experience with uncontrolled rotor-decelerated air-dropped stores; and (3) helicopters having the capabilities of control, autorotation, and flare-out to land. Aero nautical Systems Division, as well as other Government agencies, believes that rotor decelerators have potential, particularly in light of the desired expansion of limited war capability, and is conducting applied research to explore the basic feasibility of using rotors for aerospace payload recovery. This effort involves both wind tunnel testing in the transonic-super sonic range, and free-flight testing at deployment speeds up to Mach 0.9 and analyses. To date, wind tunnel tests have demonstrated the deployment, operating, and drag characteristics of an eight-foot diameter rotor decelerator through a Mach number range from 0.5 to 1.5. Analyses have indicated that rotors, as well as providing subsonic performance capability, may have potential as hypersonic glide and drag devices. Thus, rotor decelerator potential embraces the spectrum ranging from relatively low-speed aerial delivery of payloads to suborbital and orbital space vehicle recovery. (Author).

Book Performance of and Design Criteria for Deployable Aerodynamic Decelerators

Download or read book Performance of and Design Criteria for Deployable Aerodynamic Decelerators written by George Chernowitz and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present state-of-the-art, technology, and theory applicable to deployable aerodynamic decelerators, especially textile parachute canopies, are presented. Major types of decelerators are described, and their aerodynamic and operational characteristics, as well as applications, are discussed. Detailed coverage is given to decelerator materials, design and construction, hardware, test methods and vehicles, and test instrumentation. Decelerator design procedures and performance prediction techniques are demonstrated by sample calculations.

Book Some Static Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Overlapped type Tandem rotor Helicopter at Low Airspeeds

Download or read book Some Static Longitudinal Stability Characteristics of an Overlapped type Tandem rotor Helicopter at Low Airspeeds written by Robert J. Tapscott and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight measurements of some longitudinal static stability characteristics with an overlapped-type tandem-rotor helicopter at low airspeeds are presented. The data show that a critical amount of longitudinal control is required to maintain trimmed flight at certain combinations of airspeed and rate of descent. Estimates based on theoretically predicted interference effects indicate that the front rotor downwash acting on the rear rotor could cause variation of the longitudinal moments of the same order of magnitude as the measured variation.

Book Steady and Periodic Pressure Measurements on a Generic Helicopter Fuselage Model in the Presence of a Rotor

Download or read book Steady and Periodic Pressure Measurements on a Generic Helicopter Fuselage Model in the Presence of a Rotor written by Raymond E. Mineck and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A wind tunnel test of a generic helicopter fuselage model with an independently mounted rotor has been conducted to obtain steady and periodic pressure data on the helicopter body. The model was tested at four advance ratios and three thrust coefficients. The periodic unsteady pressure coefficients are marked by four peaks associated with the passage of the four rotor blades. Blade passage effects are largest on the nose and tail boom of the model. The magnitude of the pulse increases with rotor thrust coefficient. Tabular listings of the unsteady pressure data are included to permit independent analysis. A CDrom containing the steady and unsteady pressure data presented in the report is available from the authors.

Download or read book Rotorcraft written by Frank Hitchens and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2024-05-16 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work Rotorcraft, covers the various types of rotorcraft including helicopters, gyrocopters, proprotors and tiltrotors rotors, etc, both civilian and military. The first chapter is devoted to the development of rotorcraft from the days of the first flights of helicopter pioneers such as Juan de la Cierva, Paul Corno, Harold F. Pitcairn and Igor Sikorsky, to name a few. The second chapter of Rotorcraft, covers the various types of helicopters identified by their main and anti-torque rotor systems, how helicopters and gyrocopters fly and the similarities and differences between the two types. Helicopter manufacturers from the past to the present are included. The remainder of the book details a selection of 126 individual rotorcraft types, including at least one photograph, technical performance data and a short history of the type. An Appendix of rotorcraft facts completes this work. New rotorcraft are continuously being designed and built. Several various types of rotorcraft are presented here to build up a fascinating collection within these pages which, I trust the reader will find of great value and interest.
