Several key results were found. First, lateral and vertical translational platform cues had significant effects on fidelity. Their presence improved performance and reduced pilot workload. Second, yaw and roll rotational platform cues were not as important as the translational platform cues. In particular, the yaw rotational motion platform cue did not appear at all useful in improving performance or reducing workload. Third, when the lateral translational platform cue was combined with visual yaw rotational cues, pilots believed the platform was rotating when it was not. Thus, simulator systems can be made more efficient by proper combination of platform and visual cues. Fourth, motion fidelity specifications were revised that now provide simulator users with a better prediction of motion fidelity based upon the frequency responses of their motion control laws. Fifth, vertical platform motion affected pilot estimates of steady-state altitude during altitude repositioning. Finally, the combined results led to a general method for configuring helicopter motion systems and for developing simulator tasks that more likely represent actual flight. Moreover, research simulators have been used extensively by the fixed-wind industry in the design, testing, and certification of new aircraft. The rotorcraft industry, however, has been slow to use man-in-the-loop simulation to solve its design problems, primarily because of the difficulty of modeling complex rotorcraft for realtime simulation and because of the need for a wide-angle visual system for low-level flight. A joint U.S. Army and NASA program has been initiated to provide this simulation capability for exploitation by both government and industry. This paper, a status report of that program, discusses the potential application of the research simulator to future rotorcraft systems design, development, product improvement evaluations, and safety analysis. This led them to invent numerous types of vehicles to move fast over land, water and air. As training how to handle such vehicles and testing new developments can be dangerous and costly, vehicle motion simulators were invented. Motion-based simulators in particular, combine visual and physical motion cues to provide occupants with a feeling of being in the real vehicle. While visual cues are generally not limited in amplitude, physical cues certainly are, due to the limited simulator motion space. A motion cueing algorithm (MCA) is used to map the vehicle motions onto the simulator motion space. This mapping inherently creates mismatches between the visual and physical motion cues. Due to imperfections in the human perceptual system, not all visual/physical cueing mismatches are perceived. However, if a mismatch is perceived, it can impair the simulation realism and even cause simulator sickness. For MCA design, a good understanding of when mismatches are perceived, and ways to prevent these from occurring, are therefore essential. In this thesis a data-driven approach, using continuous subjective measures of the time-varying Perceived Motion Incongruence (PMI), is adopted. PMI in this case refers to the effect that perceived mismatches between visual and physical motion cues have on the resulting simulator realism. The main goal of this thesis was to develop an MCA-independent off-line prediction method for time-varying PMI during vehicle motion simulation, with the aim of improving motion cueing quality. To this end, a complete roadmap, describing how to measure and model PMI and how to apply such models to predict and minimize PMI in motion simulations is presented. Results from several human-in-the-loop experiments are used to demonstrate the potential of this novel approach.

This thesis presents detailed information on the U.S. Army Hughes OH-6A Cayuse" helicopter together with a comprehensive model of the aircraft suitable for high fidelity simulator modeling. Fidelity of the model is obtained through use of commercial off-the- shelf software that is incorporated in a low-cost flight simulator, which is marketed as FLIGHTLAB. The FLIGHTLAB development system facilitates rapid design and analysis of a high fidelity helicopter model using non-linear dynamic modeling techniques. The simulator model of the Hughes OH-6A helicopter is presented and its fidelity is compared to actual fight test data conducted at the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in Patuxent River, MD. Advancements in electromagnetic actuators and visual rendering systems are also presented to provide insight into the direction simulator technology is progressing.

Book excerpt: Understanding how humans control a vehicle (cars, aircraft, bicycles, etc.) enables engineers to design faster, safer, more comfortable, more energy efficient, more versatile, and thus better vehicles. In a typical control task, the Human Controller (HC) gives control inputs to a vehicle such that it follows a particular reference path (e.g., the road) accurately. The HC is simultaneously required to attenuate the effect of disturbances (e.g., turbulence) perturbing the intended path of the vehicle. To do so, the HC can use a control organization that resembles a closed-loop feedback controller, a feedforward controller, or a combination of both. Previous research has shown that a purely closed-loop feedback control organization is observed only in specific control tasks, that do not resemble realistic control tasks, in which the information presented to the human is very limited. In realistic tasks, a feedforward control strategy is to be expected; yet, almost all previously available HC models describe the human as a pure feedback controller lacking the important feedforward response. Therefore, the goal of the research described in this thesis was to obtain a fundamental understanding of feedforward in human manual control. First, a novel system identification method was developed, which was necessary to identify human control dynamics in control tasks involving realistic reference signals. Second, the novel identification method was used to investigate three important aspects of feedforward through human-in-the-loop experiments which resulted in a control-theoretical model of feedforward in manual control. The central element of the feedforward model is the inverse of the vehicle dynamics, equal to the theoretically ideal feedforward dynamics. However, it was also found that the HC is not able to apply a feedforward response with these ideal dynamics, and that limitations in the perception, cognition, and action loop need to be modeled by additional model elements: a gain, a time delay, and a low-pass filter. Overall, the thesis demonstrated that feedforward is indeed an essential part of human manual control behavior and should be accounted for in many human-machine applications.

Book excerpt: "The U.S. Army uses the 2B24 Synthetic Flight Training System (SFTS) for the Instrument Phase of Initial Entry Rotary Wing (IERW) training. The SFTS is an instrument simulator, mounted on a hydraulic motion platform, with no visual system. Its technology dates from the late 1960s. Its cockpit represents the UH-1, which has been replaced by the TH-67 training helicopter. The Army is concerned with the age, complexity and costs of the SFTS, at a time when PC- based simulators, like the Frasca 342 Primary Skills Trainer (PST) are available. The PST's cockpit represents the TH-67 helicopter. It has a visual display, but no motion system. Thirty-eight IEAW students were assigned to experimental (PST) or control (SFTS) groups. After 30 hr of simulator training, both groups completed 20 hr training in the TH-67. No students were eliminated or set back to later classes. Few significant differences in performance were noted, though SFTS trainees were more likely to indicate that training in the simulator had hindered performance in the aircraft. The PST seemed inferior to the SFTS in trim control. The research demonstrated that IERW students could learn instrument skills in a simpler, more economical simulator without hydraulic controls or a motion system."--DTIC.
