Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Daughter of the Gods: The Story of Helen of Troy This is simply a collection of the thoughts and say ings of others about the fair Helen of Troy, and if, as I fear, I have rather overcrowded this sketch with poeti cal quotations, it is because I became an enthusiast, and finding anything which bore reference to her, I could not then omit it. I am indebted to Symonds and Collins for the chap ters on the Iliad and the Odyssey. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Helen of Troy and Other Poems Helen of Troy Wild flight on flight against the fading dawn The flames' red wings soar upward duskily. This is the funeral pyre and Troy is dead That sparkled so the day I saw it first, And darkened slowly after. I am she Who loves all beauty - yet I wither it. Why have the high gods made me wreak their wrath - Forever since my maidenhood to sow Sorrow and blood about me? See, they keep Their bitter care above me even now. It was the gods who led me to this lair, That though the burning winds should make me weak, They should not snatch the life from out my lips. Olympus let the other women die; They shall be quiet when the day is done And have no care to-morrow. Yet for me There is no rest. The gods are not so kind To her made half immortal like themselves. It is to you I owe the cruel gift, Leda, my mother, and the Swan, my sire, To you the beauty and to you the bale; For never woman born of man and maid About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Story of Troy Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Troy Classic Reprint written by M. Clarke and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-08 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of Troy is a work of history written by author and historian M. Clarke. It is an excellent choice for those wishing to familiarise themselves with the story in a quick and efficient manner. Clarke opens his book with a brief discussion of Homer, author of The Iliad and The Odyssey, and whose writing serves as a major source of information about the history of Troy. The author then begins his interpretation of Troy with several chapters examining the city's geography and geo-political status. Of course, any history of Troy must address the Trojan War, and it is on this topic that Clarke spends the majority of his time. The writings of Homer, as translated by Alexander Pope, serve as Clarke's primary source of information about the war. The book proceeds in a logical fashion, and concludes with a chapter on the death of Achilles and the status of the Greek chiefs after the war. Clarke has created a well-written account of Troy's history. Although written in the nineteenth century, and therefore lacking in some of the historical breakthroughs of the modern world, The Story of Troy is still an interesting and useful interpretation of the events detailed. Clarke's writing is concise and definitive and this book could best be categorized as an introductory history. Readers interested in a basic history of Troy will enjoy The Story of Troy. Clarke's passion is clear and his work here is commendable. This title is a worthy addition to the personal library of history enthusiasts everywhere. Book Helen of Troy and Other Poems

Download or read book Helen of Troy and Other Poems written by Sara Teasdale and published by Mint Editions. This book was released on 2022-02-15 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Helen of Troy and Other Poems (1911) is a poetry collection by Sara Teasdale. The poet's second collection, published several years before she was awarded the 1918 Pulitzer Prize, is a masterful collection of lyric poems meditating on life, romance, and the natural world. Somber and celebratory, symbolic and grounded in experience, Helen of Troy and Other Poems revels in the mystery of existence itself. "Wild flight on flight against the fading dawn / The flames' red wings soar upward duskily. / This is the funeral pyre and Troy is dead / That sparkled so the day I saw it first, / And darkened slowly after. I am she / Who loves all beauty--yet I wither it." As Troy burns, Teasdale imagines an impassioned monologue given from the ramparts by the infamous Helen, whose faithlessness in marriage was the catalyst for war in Homer's Iliad. Although she is often seen as a minor character, more an object of male desire than an autonomous subject in her own right, Teasdale refuses to follow the template passed down by generations of poets--mostly men. Her Helen is meditative and intelligent, capable of immense sorrow and full-throated rage alike: "Men's lives shall waste with longing after me, / For I shall be the sum of their desire, / The whole of beauty, never seen again." While acknowledging her role in Troy's destruction, Helen is a tragic figure in Teasdale's poem, a woman who never asked for beauty, let alone for the troubles that beauty brought down on the world. Containing monologue poems from such figures as Sappho, Beatrice, and Guenevere, alongside a series of love poems and finely-crafted sonnets, Helen of Troy and Other Poems is a brilliant collection by a gifted American poet. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Sara Teasdale's Helen of Troy and Other Poems is a classic work of American poetry reimagined for modern readers.

Book Beauty s Daughter

Download or read book Beauty s Daughter written by Carolyn Meyer and published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The bestselling author of the Young Royals books “delves into Greek mythology with a retelling of the Trojan War from the point of view of Hermione” (Booklist). What is it like to be the daughter of the most beautiful woman in the world? Hermione knows . . . her mother is Helen of Troy, the famed beauty of Greek myth. Helen is not only beautiful but also impulsive, and when she falls in love with charming Prince Paris, she runs off with him to Troy, abandoning her distraught daughter. Determined to reclaim their enchanting queen, the Greek army sails for Troy. Hermione stows away in one of the thousand ships in the fleet and witnesses the start of the legendary Trojan War. In the rough Greek encampment outside the walls of Troy, Hermione’s life is far from that of a pampered princess. Meanwhile, her mother basks in luxury in the royal palace inside the city. Hermione desperately wishes for the gods and goddesses to intervene and end the brutal war—and to bring her love. Will she end up with the handsome archer Orestes, or the formidable Pyrrhus, leader of a tribe of fierce warriors? And will she ever forgive her mother for bringing such chaos to her life and the lives of so many others? “Beauty’s Daughter burrows into the recent interest in Greek mythology and builds a fictional account of the young woman’s quest to find her lost love.” —VOYA “This title would make a great pairing for students studying Greek mythology or reading the Iliad or Odyssey and will appeal particularly to students interested in ancient history.” —School Library Journal
